Last night I met up with Darion and Loy for a quick bite to eat in Century City before we made our way to the movies. It was cool and rainy so we were really looking forward to a fun night at the movies … unfortch, Adventureland was not quite what we had in mind:

To be fair, the movie totally had its heart in the right place … it tried really hard to be good but, sadly, I didn’t find a thing about it that I liked. The story dragged way too long and the acting performances were not impressive at all. The main guy wants to be Michael Cera so bad … it was kinda sad. Ryan Reynolds, it pains me to say, was so boring in this film … it almost diminished my lurve for him. His character was desperate to be the character that Matthew McConaughey played in Dazed & Confused but it fell waaaaaaaaaaaaaay short. In fact, Adventureland the movie was a really sad attempt to be Dazed & Confused … it’s really bad. None of us were really impressed with the movie at all. I really cannot recommend this film at all … it’s not that funny, it’s not at all deep and it drags the entire time. I’m curious to hear if anyone else liked it … and why. As I said, the movie really tried but, IMHO, does not deliver.

No plans for tonight just yet … I have to finish some chores here and then pack my shizz for my weekend trip back East. While I am not looking forward to all the flying, I am looking forward to seeing David and his family. For them, I’d fly anywhere.

I agree with everything Katy, plink and Em said. I thought the film was cute and insightful in its own way. As a soon-to-be college grad, I felt for Jesse Eisenberg’s character and thought he was relatable and interesting to get to know. I don’t think the acting was supposed to be great, and I think the director wanted more of a sense of imperfection and innocence that could help with developing the characters. Maybe it’s because I can never get enough of Bill from Freaks & Geeks (Martin Starr), but I really enjoyed this movie.

I just got back from seeing this movie and I totally agree that the main guy was trying to be Michael Cera. I swear if I closed my eyes I would have thought he was in the movie. I am from Pittsburgh, born and raised and still couldn’t even get excited from the fact that Kennywood and a lot of parts of Pittsburgh were in the movie. 15 minutes in I was ready to leave. BAD BAD BAD.

I thought it was great!!! Most review of it were REALLY positive, and rightly so. The problem is, it was NOTHING at ALL like the trailer. The trailer made it look like a screwball, fun comedy. Instead, it was a serious, nostalgic coming-of-age film. I really loved it! If you want to see an interesting film about growing up, definitely see it. If you wanna laugh at Kristen Wiig, watch SNL instead.

When I first saw the preview for this, I thought “wow, they re-made “Waiting” set in an amusement park” That being said, I still want to see it.

Trent, plz. How were Bill Hader and Kristin Wiig? They’re two of the best character actors currently on SNL, and also two of the kindest most down to earth celebs I’ve ever met- I’m seeing this movie soon despite the fact I can’t stand Kristin Stewart.

  6. Julie says:

I felt the same! Totally stupid but the soundtrack was awesome! And as a soon to be graduate school grad in this crappy economy, I didn’t relate at all to his character. Were student loans so hard to get in the 80s?

I have to say I really enjoyed it. It is much more subdued than its trailer would have one believe but I found it geniunely engaging and touching. And I thought all the performances were top notch, even RR, who is usually too much of a ham for my tastes. My only quibble was that Kristen Wiig’s part was really tiny, though she did the best with it. She needs her own movie. Get on that, Apatow!

while i agree it was a bit on the boring side, the best part of the movie was the music and the costume design (acid wash and big hair). so thought it was going to be a comedy, while there were some funny parts it was very dry. the fact that they have such a crap job was the funniest thing of the whole movie. K Stew played her usual character, brooding teen…(she was even a brooding child in Panic Room)

I’m gonna go ahead and send out love to Bill Hader and Martin Starr thought. As much as the main characters in the movie didn’t really compel me (like, at all), I loved those two. I thought the character of Joel was much more moving than Eisenberg’s character. And Wiig was good as well. But to each their own, I suppose.

  10. Tony says:

Thighs Wide Shut really liked it..In fact, he said it blew away most of the comedy’s that have come out over the past few years…..Go figure.

  11. Michelle ma belle says:

Aw, well I guess I was the only one who liked the movie. Martin Starr cracked me up as he did back in Freaks & Geeks. Oh well, to each their own I suppose! It does have a good soundtrack.

hey…you might want to at least get bristol’s ex boyfriend’s name right……its johnston with a T, not johnson!
