This past Sunday morn, we got our first look at Bo Obama, the new First Dog, and today we get to see Bo running and frolicking with the First Family on the White House lawn … which is now his new home. Yesterday was Bo‘s official coming out party as members of the US and worldwide press corp came out to the White House to get the first official look at the newly expanded First Family:

He may be the leader of the free world, but he still has to walk the dog. “We all have to take turns walking the dog,’’ President Obama declared Tuesday, as Bo Obama, the newest – and only four-legged — occupant of the White House, made his much-anticipated Washington debut. Then again, the president had his two young daughters with him. What else could any self-respecting father and new dog owner say? “We’re trying to be responsible dog owners,’’ he later confessed. In this city of jaded journalists, about 100 members of the Fourth Estate turned out to watch the Obamas — President Barack, First Lady Michelle and First Daughters Malia and Sasha – scamper around the South Lawn with Bo and entertain dog-related questions. This we now know as a result: Bo has not yet had any accidents in the presidential mansion. “We’re trying to keep her from having accidents,’’ Mrs. Obama said, mistakenly using the female pronoun even though Bo is a boy. (No offense intended, Bo, but with your curly black hair, white front paws and carefully-groomed tail, you do kind of look like a girl.) Bo, a gift to the Obamas from Senator Edward M. Kennedy Jr., is a Portuguese Water Dog. The president allowed that Porties, as they are called, like to eat tomatoes. “Michelle’s garden is in danger,’’ Mr. Obama declared. Not to worry, Mrs. Obama said – the garden doesn’t have any tomatoes. Here, Sasha Obama, 7, weighed in, changing the subject. “He doesn’t know how to swim!’’ she exclaimed. (Water dog or not, Bo will apparently require swimming lessons.) Bo joins a long line of presidential pooches, the most recent being Barney, President George W. Bush’s dog, who once bit a reporter. (For the record, some say Barney was provoked.) Barney was allowed in the Oval Office. Will Bo have similar privileges? “Of course,’’ Mr. Obama replied. Will he sleep in a bed? “Not in my bed,’’ the president said.
It is really nice to see that we can focus on something this whimsical and happy during a time of some strife. Of course, the acquisition of a new dog isn’t and shouldn’t be front page news but sometimes I think a story like this is a welcome one. Seeing the First Family in a more “normal” light makes us all feel closer to them. I’m sure having Bo come home to live with them is the best news ever for Sasha and Malia Obama. After the jump, check out video of Bo’s introduction to the press yesterday afternoon …
The Obamas look very happy and I’m sure Bo is tickled pink that he is now the top dog in the country. Sounds like a pretty swank gig … some guys have all the luck.

I agree Trent – though this seems like fluff at the time of such dour usual news, I like reading about how the Obamas are trying to keep some normalcy in their daughters lives. Which I guess is a very important example for other parents.
Nice pictures they look like the ideal family, at first i though why does a dog warrent so much attention, but you are right trent it is a nice alternative news story, compared to war, terror and the credit crunch.
Mr. Prez seems to enjoy the dog more then the kids do! lol
I think that the media went over the top about the dog but it was cool that the Obamas were so casual about it and didn’t do a lot of posing-I don’t think we’ll be seeing Bo that often. I have almost no experience with dogs but I do have to say that the puppy is a cute little fluff ball.
What happened to the shelter dog he vowed to get? Poor dogs are being put down every day..He could have saved at least one..Blech..One more reason why I can’t stand this guy..
Wasn’t this dog a gift from the Kennedy’s? I like how Obama is wearing a suit and running with the dog..hehehe…They seem like a great family. Always happy. So normal :)
@Kendra: Melia has allergies so they are severely limited in the types of dogs they can get. I grew up with allergies and we had to get a Portuguese Water Dog for that exact reason. We looked in shelters but I couldn’t be around any of the dogs without getting sick. Melia is the same way. They did make a significant contribution to the D.C. Humane Society to make up for not getting a shelter dog and urged people to get shelter dogs first.
Porties are loyal dogs who are incredibly sweet with their families, he will make a nice addition to the fam.
@Kendra – Malia is allergic so they had to get a job she could be around. Not only did they TRY to find one at a shelter, but Bo was adopted from a family who could not keep him I believe. They also made a donation to their local shelter because they could not adopt one from there. That is a poor reason to not like our wonderful President.
Awww, so cute! I love how he totally doesn’t get the sitting thing yet. This family is so freaking cool.
@Kendra, how bout you take your negativity elsewhere. The dog was adopted from a family that couldn’t keep him… which kept him out of a shelter. Read the news before you spout off. You almost, but not quite, ruined my puppy buzz.
@Ashley – I have many reasons to not like the President..This was just one of them..I hadn’t read that they contributed to the Humane Society so thank you for that info, Jill..Still don’t like him, though.. ;)
@Lauren – I’m stating my opinion..Do you wish that everyone who differs from you go somewhere else? Lame..
i was hoping for them to get a shelter dog too! but it is pretty much impossible to get a non shedding dog at a shelter. at least they made a donation!
@Kendra – I’m fine with everyone having an opinion, if you don’t like him, you don’t. But I just feel that not liking him on the fact he didn’t adopt a shelter dog is slightly idiotic, but glad to set you straight on the facts. Always check facts before shooting someone down.
Adorable. I just love this family. You can see that the Pres and First Lady work very hard to give those girls as normal a childhood as possible. It’s inspiring.
TAKE THE DOG OFF THE LEASH!!!!! it is so sad that they are at the whitehouse, in a fenced and controlled area and the dog is still on a damn leash!
@anna — I think the dog was on the leash because of the 100+ reporters who were there taking photos and videos of the dog. It makes sense that they would want to keep the dog from going after the strangers.
@anna there were a crap load of reporters there.. they couldn’t just let him go and have him run all over them. Plus, had you read the news story, you would have seen that Bush’s dog actually bit a reporter once. They didn’t need to have that accident again.
Was it necessary to get the ugliest dog available?
It’s just a dog folks.
fake-ass political BULLSHIT.
First of all I thought that Bo was a gift from the Kennedy’s. Second, if they made a nice contribution to the shelter then I think that makes up for the fact that they couldn’t/didn’t get a shelter animal. Third, I can see why they couldn’t just go get any animal because their daughter is allergic.
I believe in adopting but this situation wasn’t the same as a family with non allergies. So I get that they didn’t adopt. And the doggie is super cute, I don’t know what people are talking about saying it’s ugly. It’s like the dog version of my cat…maybe that’s why I like him so much.
That dog was cute. I saw the thing on NBC last night.
@kendra: Pretty stupid to dislike a person because of their sensible choice of where they got their dog… but that’s just me.
Yeah, it was a gift from the Kennedys, or that’s what they said on TV.
Though I have to say I laughed when B ran with his dog- it looked like a commercial, a cheesy one at that. Haha ;)
