Happy Earth Day 2009, Y’All
Go shorty, it's your Earth Day

Today is Earth Day, a time for the world to pause and reflect on the impact that we as a people have on our planet and hopefully work towards making things better … not only for today but from here on out. Even tho you may have never thought about your “carbon footprint” before or you’ve never been serious about thinking “green”, it’s never too late to start:

There are so many small things that YOU can do to make a difference today. The Earth Day Network is but one site that offers tips and suggestions on how you can get involved today … which means that you would be joining a reported 1 billion people around the globe celebrating in some way Earth Day today. Pink reader Itzia who hails from Viña del Mar, Chile sent me this very powerful Earth Day video from Greenpeace, which I urge y’all to watch:

Even if you’ve never thought about the environment before now, don’t you think today would be a great day to start? This is our home, y’all … let’s do our best to take care of it as best we can! Love your Mother, Happy Earth Day!!

While I love the idea of Earth Day, I honestly wonder if it really does anything in regards to changing the habits of the general population. We’re a hybrid-driving, composting, rain-barrelling, recycling-whatever-we-can family and our daughter already knows where the paper recycling goes and loves to take it to the office for us! We’ve been like this for years… but I wonder what others will do – and why they won’t realize just how easy it is to do something as simple as recycling.

Don’t give up hope Winona – while I (a 33 yr old) didn’t realize it was Earth Day, my 5 yr old son knew it because he’s learning about it in school (and from watching ‘The Big Green Help’ on Nickelodeon). He told me this morning when he woke up that today is Earth Day and I actually felt a little ashamed for not know it! So today is the day we start recycling (the city we live in offers recycling bags) and seeing what else we can do to be more green. I agree with Trent – it’s never to late to start.

earth day does accomplish something, awareness. like kristi’s little boy, its to change the minds of the future generation. because this one is taking so much to time to do anything about it, maybe the next generation will accomplish more. hopefuly it wont be to late..

Happy Earth Day everybody, and thanks for posting this Trent! I agree with the posters above, it’s never too late to start and it’s all about awareness.

It’s nice to know some people do care about our environment. I wore my 11th Hour t-shirt (by Obey) and have been trying to wear organic shirts for Earth Week. Today about 15 of us at school participated in a highway cleanup as well after picking up all the recycling bins at school. A few people in the group also are going to check out Earth tonight.
