First Look: Russell Crowe, ‘Robin Hood’
Man in Tights

Russell Crowe has teamed up with his Gladiator director Ridley Scott for a new period piece film and today we get our first look at Crowe in his new role of Robin Hood, the so-called Prince of Thieves:

Robin Hood, say hello to Gladiator. The story of the bandit who steals from the rich and gives to the poor gets a makeover in Robin Hood, which reunites Gladiator star Russell Crowe and director Ridley Scott. Sporting a Caesar haircut and slimmed-down physique, Crowe shed the weight he gained for his portly characters in State of Play and Body of Lies. He also updated the bandit’s wardrobe. “He doesn’t have the old Robin Hood tights,” says producer Brian Grazer. “He’s got armor. He’s very medieval. He looks, if anything, more like he did in Gladiator than anything we’re used to seeing with Robin Hood.” And though it won’t be easy replicating the box office or Oscar success of the 2000 film —Gladiator raked in $458 million worldwide and won five Academy Awards, including best picture — Grazer says Robin Hood’s story was ripe for revisiting. “Oddly, it’s a metaphor for today,” Grazer says. “He’s trying to create equality in a world where there are a lot of injustices. He’s a crusader for the people, trying to reclaim some of the ill-gotten gains of the wealthy. That’s a universal theme.” Not that the film will linger on the contemporary. “We just shot a scene where Maid Marion fires a flaming bow and arrow into the night sky. It’s just a cool story.”

HMM … it looks like Robin Hood will be going up against Sherlock Holmes (who we all know will be played by Robert Downey, Jr.) in a box office battle royale to determine who is the bigger literary heavyweight. To be honest, my money is on Sherlock Holmes. While Robin will have his band of Merry Men, Sherlock has got Watson (played by Jude Law) and his Jude’stache. Hello, there’s no contest. While many would say that their fave Robin Hoods from days of yore have been played by actors like Errol Flynn, Kevin Costner or even Cary Elwes … I’d have to say that my fave actor to play Robin Hood is Patrick Stewart who played Robin in an ep of Star Trek: The Next Generation. But … Crowe did hand in a pretty impressive performance as Maximus in Gladiator back in 2000 … I suppose he can pull off Robin Hood as well, right?

NO…KC was the best. They shouldn’t remake this again!

  2. Honestly, was Orlando Bloom out of town or something? Who will be in the Little Red Riding Hood movie, Maggie Smith?

  3. A says:

No one can top Errol Flynn’s Robin Hood, I watched that film yesterday!! I think this one is going to flop major.

  4. canuckistani says:

Pfffft!!! Russell will blow those other light weights off the map!

  5. gokarm says:

Well the battle is won in my own mind. No question about it, I will see Sherlock Holmes first. I MAY see Robin Hood, but not opening weekend. I’m a little tired of Robin Hood. Costner’s movie and the subsequent Brian Adam’s hit sorta ruined the “lore” for me, though I still love Disney’s Robin Hood. Oodalaley! And I like the romance with Maid Marion. I doubt Ridley Scott will focus much on that. Besides that, the hotter ticket right now is RDJ AND Jude Law! That’s some serious 2009 star power, right there. Crowe is sooo yesterday.

  6. My favorite Robin Hood is Jonas Armstrong on the BBC version. The whole cast is fantastic, especially Jonas and Keith Allen (Lily’s father)

  7. Claire says:

The Disney version will forever be my favorite. Sir Hiss…

  8. CB says:

My vote is for Carey Elwes because unlike some Robin Hoods, he can speak with an English accent!

  9. Dana J says:

oh come on people, patrick stewart as ROBIN HOOD!! classic. even if it was for one episode it was still brills.

  10. sheryl says:

Sherlock Holmes with RDJ and Jude?….no question, that’s where I’m going to be.

  11. Lizzie says:

TG he lost the weight. He was looking really bad.

  12. Bridgid says:

With Sir Ridley and Crowe working on this project, I have faith that it will be one heck of a film. I don’t want to bring up that Costner version in the same breath. Crowe sure is looking good too.

why does nobody know about Disney’s 1st production of robin hood?? The Story of Robin Hood and his Merrie Men (1952) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045197/) i don’t think anyone can beat Richard Todd’s Robin Hood.

  14. superfly says:

I second Jonas Armstrong as the best. Who do they think they’re fooling, RC will be a terrible if not God awful Hood.

  15. Leah says:

I love you for the Patrick Stewart shout-out!

  16. Michelina says:

I will not be seeing Robin Hood. I don’t think they need to remake this film again either!!

  17. Jessica says:

So in my mind I was thinking Disney’s Robin Hood but then I saw about Star Trek. I had forgotten about that one! I’m so glad that someone else likes Star Trek, people make fun of me for it.

And I’ll see Sherlock Holmes. Sorry Robin Hood.

Anyone out there who’s excited about this run-o-the-mill
remake hash should give serious thought to moving out
of their mother’s house—-NOW. That includes Russell
Crowe and Ridley Scott. Very disappointing project choice.
