Zac Efron & Vanessa Hudgens Portray Phillip & Aurora From Disney’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’
Back in January 2007, the Walt Disney company released the first photos from their Year of a Million Wishes campaign which featured celebrities portraying classic characters from Disney animated films in new photos shot by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz. As you may recall, David Beckham was photographed as Prince Phillip from Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, Scarlett Johansson was photographed as Cinderella and Beyoncé was photographed as Alice from Alice in Wonderland. Then in January of 2008, Disney released a whole batch of new photos from the campaign which featured celebs like Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony (who portrayed Princess Jasmine & Aladdin), Whoopi Goldberg (as Aladdin’s Genie), Jessica Biel (as Pocahontas) and more. Later that same year, a new photo that featured Julianne Moore as Ariel from The Little Mermaid and Michael Phelps as a merman was released. Today, we get to see the latest photo from this Disney campaign … behold, Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens as Prince Phillip (the very same character Becks portrayed in the first batch of photos) and Princess Aurora/Briar-Rose from Disney’s Sleeping Beauty:

While the pose is pretty cheesy (most likely because it’s got Zac Efron in it), the photo is beautiful. Leibovitz is such an amazing photographer, her photos are very, very cool. I suppose I get why Disney would select Zanessa to portray these characters but I’m actually surprised they’ve decided to milk the Sleeping Beauty movie for another photo when there are so many other films that have yet to be featured. Snow White?* Mulan? Mowgli from Jungle Book? I am happy to know that the campaign is still ongoing, especially since Disney’s Year of a Million Dreams is long over. I wonder if we’ll be seeing more photos soon from the campaign? I guess we shall see.
*Pink reader Starkie reminds me that Rachel Weisz did portray Snow White in a photo of her own. Thanks!

It actually looks like Snow White…doesn’t he have to wake her up after she eats the poison apple?

Yeah she should’ve been Snow White. But that dress is definitely Sleeping Beauty’s.

This picture reminds me of the Entertainment Weekly pictures for Twilight with Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart…. so I’m biased.

shes not sleeping beauty. Princess Aurora is BLONDE.
March 7th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
I think the photo is breath taking I would love to see all of them !!

I don’t think it matters that she’s not blonde, they’re a cute couple and it’s a beautiful pic, not cheesy in my opinion. Plus I don’t think Aladdin and jazmin were puerto rican or the genie was black, but that photo still worked.

That picture is beautiful… absolutely amazing work! And they look so cute in it!! Long live Zanessa lol

I love this campaign, but Zac looks like he is doing his best Edward Cullen impression and is really trying to restrain himself from sucking her blood. Also, I couldn’t figure out what was off about this pic as sleeping beauty until I saw your comment Kelly, thats so true. This is more like just a picture of a prince and princess. She has dark hair, they should have gone with beauty and the beast and he just could have been the beast post transformation.

Oh God, she is so irritating to me.
March 7th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
this makes me mad. they so should not be sleeping beauty, that is like my favorite animated disney movie (classic), and vanessa does not fit aurora’s description!

While the photo is very beautiful, and I love everything Leibovitz’s photographs. This portrayal is my least favorite out of the whole campaign. I don’t think these two disney starlets do it justice…

Zac looks ridiculous. And dirty. What the hell? And why is Aurora not blonde? Plus, is it me, or does she somehow resemble Rose McGowan? Vanessa doesn’t quite look like herself.

I agree with Roxster’s post, I think they should have done Beauty and the Beast, it hasn’t been covered yet, has it?

I love this series! Taylor Lautner would be a GREAT Mowgli! Just sayin’.
March 7th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
There were several Prince Charmings, it’s possible Becks, could’ve been one of them.
March 7th, 2009 at 8:09 pm
i think it’d be better if it werent them two.but the idea’s great
March 7th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
@Amy – Ahh! Taylor Lautner for Mowgli !!!!! BEST. idea. EVER.

The great about Annie is that she defies the normal…Whoopi was an african american jeanie..that isn’t normal either, so why would the princess need to have blond hair. it is art, so for the people who are stereotypically believing the princess should be blond like the movie, you obviously don’t understand art, and the way Annie portrays hers. It is absolutely stunning, and her subjects have everything to do with it.

They completely whitened her skin. What is up with that?
March 9th, 2009 at 10:41 pm
Im sorry, but classic Disney should NOT be portrayed like this!
March 10th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
Wow some people are idiots. First off, this is Annie we are talking about, she defies expectation and does her own her, hence her greatness. Second of all, Aurora has been essentially ‘dead’ for 100 years, of course her skin is white, there is no life in her. Phillip’s face in contrast is warm, he is giving her his life through his kiss. This pic captures the moment after the kiss. It’s based more on the ballet of SB more than the Disney version. In the ballet, he kisses her, but she does not wake, she keeps her eyes closed. Thinking that he has been unsucessful, Phillip gently kisses her cheek, remembering her smelll, as he does this, Aurora wakes up. This is that moment. I would also like to point out, that Disney were not the almighty when it comes to SB. The original tale told of rape and torture and all things in between. Disney prettied it up. So therefore Aurora did not have blonde hair, that’s just an interpretation of it. This pic was taken for adult fans of Disney, the magazine it features in is bought under a heafty price or a subscription. It’s arty and airy and perfect. The best shoot of the whole collection. (Even though this shoot is part of the D23, a new series of shots).
This pic, and I’m sure the outtakes, are pure art. Annie has done a beauiful job, and the result is breathtaking. Not least because of the subjects, who just let their love and natural ease breathe in the picture. They are a stunning and amazing couple, paired with a legend. Pure genius.
