SxSW: Day 4

The TV Guide
March 22nd, 2009

After last night’s lateness and today’s hotel check out-ness, I only have time to write one post before I have to get on my plane back to LA. Please forgive the shortness but the last night of South by Southwest for me here in Austin, TX was a late one … and it was awesome. After I finished blogging yesterday, I made my way to the closest Sonic to enjoy some amazing deliciousness to get my day started:

If Chick-Fil-A is my fave Southern fast food restaurant, Sonic has to be my #2. I LIVED for their Frito’s Pies back when I lived in Oklahoma … but they’ve since turned into Frito Chili Cheese Wraps — and they’re just as amazing. OMG, I could’ve honestly eaten 8 of those things but I wanted to munch on the tater tots and the popcorn chicken … oh and a large grape slush. It was so delish :)

So after I ate all that yumminess, I made my way downtown and met up with my friend Devin. We grabbed some drinks at the Shakespeare’ Ale House, got hit on by some drunk girls and got to talk music. I really wanted to see DJ Dieselboy but his performance was too close to Yelle’s performance who was all the way across … so we skipped him to see Yelle only to find a massively long line. Devin only had a wristband so I waited with him in line and we determined that we weren’t going to get in. We cut our losses and got in line for Perry Farrell’s solo show at midnight. The line wasn’t too long when we got there but the door people were telling us that they didn’t think anyone would get in cuz they had to fulfill a “guest list” which I understand is a no-no here at SxSW. A few locals in the know started complaining and magically they let the folks with wristbands in … Devin and I got a prime position right at the front of the stage. I kinda thought that all of Jane’s Addiction might perform but it turned out to be Perry, his small band and a couple of go-go dancers. Here are a few photos:

The show was just fun as hell!! Perry is such a happy man, his show was just really jovial and he was in great spirits. The whole place was a total lovefest. His performance ran a little longer than the usual 45 mins. cuz he did an encore of the Jane’s Addiction song Jane Says to close out his show. After the jump, watch video of that performance …

It was just a kick-ass way to end the night … and SxSW for me. Perry reached out and grabbed my hand, we had a moment … was really very, very cool.

After Perry, Devin and I made our way to the Red Bull Moon Tower party on the outskirts of Austin to nightcap it. After hanging out at the shinding the previous nights, I was looking forward to just chillin’ and checkin’ out a few of the bands scheduled to perform. For some reason, the cops decided that enough was enough and shut down the party before Erykah Badu could perform :( They let everyone stay to eat and drink so we did that for a while. The Red Bull party was very cool this year and much love goes out to Erika and Casey (Go Sooners!) for taking care of us.

SxSW is over for me … I have to check out of my hotel, turn in my rental car and catch my flight but I had such a great time here in Austin … I think I’m coming back for another go round next year :) I’m so glad I made a new friend in Devin:

Hopefully we’ll keep in touch so he can come visit LA so I can show him the hospitality that he showed me here in Austin. Much, much love goes out to the people of Austin … all y’all are the coolest people around. I had an absolute blast, I love you all and I hope to be back soon. Things here on the blog should be back to normal tomorrow morning … but I gots ta be out. Thank you Austin, thank you Texas, thank you South by Southwest!!!

You should hit up Austin again this October for the incredible Austin City Limits Festival. The lineup hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s always a winner. Texas (and Austin) would love to have you!

  2. Kendra Says:

I saw Perry Farrell at Coachella one year and you are totally spot on..He was such a positive force radiating from the stage..He was playing as the sun was going down and it was such an amazing and magical performance! I’m so glad you had such a blast at SXSW!

  3. Carolyn Says:

Trent, thank you for sharing your video of Perry. I think he’s just amazing too. I can’t get over the fact that the man just doesn’t seem to age. He’s a true rock and roll god. Too bad you couldn’t see Dieselboy… I’ve seen him a number of times over the years, alone and with Planet of the Drums.

  4. Bald Outing Says:

You are making me crave Sonic!

  5. Aly Says:

Sonic is more southern…but Chick fil a definitely isn’t. I’m from MD and they’re all over the place. So good though! I love me some sonic, especially because they show the commercials all the time and the closest one is a state away!

  6. jcruzee Says:

thank you thank you thank you for the vid. it totally just made my day. took me back, fo sho! i’m glad you had an excellent time. cheers to many more!

  7. Shelby Anne Says:

It’s hard to imagine a life without Sonic or Chic-fil-A !!!
Glad you had a good time in the Lone Star State!

  8. Kurt Says:

Trent–I am off for a week of meetings in Texas tomorrow. You’ve given me something exciting to look forward to: the Frito Chili Cheese Wrap! I am not that familiar with Sonic though I seem to recall loving their fried pickles. Thanks again for your hospitality last weekend.

    All the best,

    Kurt

  9. Bess Says:

Chick Fil A was started in Atlanta, GA, so I would say it’s southern! I love Sonic too! Trent, you have the same fav foods as I do! Love it!

  10. Chase Says:

I have never, EVER ate SONIC or Chick Fil A in my life! We don’t even have those here. : ( We only have: McDonald’s, KFC, Taco Bell, Carl’s Jr., Burger King, Jack In The Box, and that’s about it… boo!

  11. anna Says:

I could never eat at those places like that! Once every 4 months I have a McDonalds or A Chipolte. You need to get some organic greens and lean chicken and some Fish high in Omega 3 in you Trent! It’s healthy!

  12. staci Says:

your site keeps eating my comments. i was just yumming over taco bueno and fazoli’s which you should remember from your days in norman. :)

  13. TandSara Says:

aww trent Im from OKC and I know all about SONIC, I used to go there almost every day b/c there was one around the corner from my house, Im in San diego now and I found that point loma chick fil-a ( HEAVEN) but yeah trent you are all inside my head with the fast food joints. You know about REX”S they used to have that place in Oklahoma , I think they had it in Norman too, can’t remember( I know you went to OU) they closed them down some years ago. Hey what year did you graduate, I was thinking you might know my sister she went to OU to, she graduated in 1999.

  14. TandSara Says:

Anna, I know organic is the way to go but in the midwest people don’t eat like that, sorry to break it to ya, lol. The only health food store in Oklahoma is Atkins, lol( and people from there KNOW that, lol)

  15. AHud Says:

Oh man I love Sonic! When we’re not going to a real happy hour, my friends and I always hit up the sonic happy hour. Can’t beat an 89 cent limeade! Hope you had a blast in ATX :) Come back soon!

  16. amie Says:

    mmmmm love sonic!!!!

  17. Heather_Lea Says:

What is Perry doing to that poor girl? LoL.

  18. Rachel Says:

Omg. We lived in Upstate NY (bc my husbands in the Army) and there wasn’t any Sonics ANYWHERE! We’re now in Arkansas/Oklahoma and I’ve went to Sonic three times already! I love their drinks. Ahh, I <3 Sonic.

  19. Irma Says:

I had no idea that not every state (despite claiming to be “America’s Drive Thru”) had Sonics!! They’ve always been one of my favorites but now with their new dollar menu, it’s just perfect. I have 3 within a 5 mile radius of me. It’s wonderful but I think we’re just down right spoiled down here in Texas with great food in genera, not just fast food. Mexican food, Thai food, Chinese food, etc.

  20. valupack Says:

Chick fil a is the shizzle. Period end of discussion. Also Perry is way cute along with his chicks- I would make out with each and every one of them

  21. melissa Says:

ok so i’m from nyc, born and raised. i’ve seen sonic commercials obviously but have never even SEEN a sonic. what exactly is a frito’s pie? it sounds like it could be either amazing or nauseating.

i go to college in nyc too and one of our dining halls has a chick fil a in it. the first time i had it freshman yr was a total jizz in my pants moment

  22. Bald Outing Says:

I used to live in NY – it was sooo strange that they played Sonic commercials all the time, yet there isn’t a Sonic within 100 miles of NYC.

  23. Roxster Says:

@ Melissa and Bald…I was going to say the same thing! So weird…they do it in CT too. Its so annoying! Trent – I love that all of your SXSW posts are equal parts food (and fastfood..not like some local joint haha) and music…..Is that Perry’s wife in the last two pics?

  24. Spice Says:

Hey Trent – you should definitely hit up ACL in October! Also try Top Notch Burgers which are featured in Dazed and Confused and you can’t come all the way here and not try some Mexican food…. Taco Cabana is a chain but better quality & more authentic than other chains.

  25. Feed Me Seymour! Says:

Trent, your diet amazes me. I know you must not (cannot?!) eat chik-fil-a and sonic fast food all the time, but how do you stay so fit?! Ugh, I’m so envious. Have you ever been to Tito’s Tacos on Washington Place @ Sepuleveda? I grew up on that stuff and still love it. My husband thinks it’s cult. Clearly he is not from L.A. Eat on. I shall live vicariously through you… on so many matters.

  26. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

@Feed Me Seymour! — LOL, it’s not that I’m “fit”, it’s more that I’m blessed with a great metabolism. I live in fear of the day it finally gives out cuz then I’ll be screwed. I have not tried Tito’s Tacos but I will seek it out. I’ve been meaning to try some of the various taco stands here in LA, so I’ll take your suggestion :)

  27. Bald Outing Says:

Yeah I didn’t get why they would waste so much money on advertising in a place with no Sonic!

  28. Irma Says:

@melissa – a Frito Pie (which is a must have at any concession stand at a high school athletic event here in Texas) is Fritos with chili and cheese oozed over it. you swirl it all together and you get heaven. I make them all the time since they’re easy. Try Hormel’s Chili, some Velveeta and fritos and you’re set!

  29. Nimbus Says:

Wats with the slags in the background? was the concert in a stripclub/whorehouse?
