Yesterday was a pretty miserable day for me … I was basically on the brink of death and it was not fun. My entire body ached and I was burning up for most of the day … fortunately, my stomach was fine so I was pretty sure my illness wouldn’t last long. David was such a doll, he took care of my every need … hot tea, cold oj and fresh fruit — he kept me from wanting to end it all ;) Obvs, we were in no mood to go out last night so we rented Vicky Cristina Barcelona on On Demand and ordered in:

While I greatly enjoyed the film overall, I honestly did not see what all the fuss was about. Sure, Penélope Cruz was great in the film but I absolutely did not think her performance was Oscar-worthy. Considering the amazing work that Amy Adams did for Doubt, I just couldn’t see it. Scarlett Johansson was the worst part of the film, I’m actually surprised the actress who played Vicky, Rebecca Hall, didn’t get more attention … I much preferred her performance to Scarlett‘s. But, as I said, I really liked the film overall … it was a nice reminder of the amazing time that David and I spent in Barcelona a couple of years ago. Fun movie, just a bit overhyped in my humble opinion.
After the movie, we watched a few eps of Sex and the City … then I downed a Nyquil shot and passed out. I could feel my fever breaking in the middle of the night and I awoke to 100% less aches. I’m not quite back to normal but I feel the worst has passed. I doubt we’ll be up for anything social today but we do need a bed … we may venture out in public after all.

Hope you feel better soon, Trent! :) And I definitely agree with you about the movie.. I didn’t see what the hype was about–I mean, it was mainly about the girl-on-girl action but it was only few seconds anyway! And oddly enough, after seeing Scarlett’s performance in it, it kinda made me like her less.. :( I preferred Vicky much more!!!
Get well soon :) drink loads of water and sleep a lot. :)
This movie looks okay but I would rather wait until watching it when it gets on TV or someone else rented it. Definitely not my cup of tea. Scarlett ruins pretty much about everything these days; The Nanny Diaries is my fave movie from her… she is long gone for her Horse Whisper acting days.
Good to hear you are on the mend. And I totally agree with you about Penelope Cruz. Being gorgeous doesn’t mean she’s worthy of winning on Oscar.
I hope you feel better ! Have you been resting without a bed??
@hapa — we have a bed, my bed which is in the guest room … we’re lookin’ for a king bed for our master bedroom
i loved this movie. I do feel that the actress who played Vicky should have gotten more attention. Penelope was great…I loved her role and the way she portrayed it.
I LOVED vicky, cristina, barcelona!
And i COMPLETELY agree with you that Scarlett was very boring in the movie! She just seemed lost among great actors
Javier Bardem was also SO good in it, he was such a ladies man in it LOL
IMHO Penelope totally deserved the Oscar, she was fantastic as Maria Elena, her acting was very intense. I’m glad she is getting recognition in Hollywood :D she was also fantastic in Almodovar’s Volver
We rented the same movie yesterday and when it was over, we both looked at each other and go, “that’s it?” what was all the hype about!? she didn’t even show up until like 50 minutes into the movie. don’t get me wrong, she is a fantastic actress, but not sure about Oscar-worthy in this particular role. We also went out to see the Wrestler and thought Marisa Tomei did well, as did Mickey Rourke. Doubt is next on our list.
Get well soon!
I agree with most of the comments. However, Penelope stole the show when she explodes onto the screen mid-movie. I almost think that it’s the A/B experience that got her the oscar. After watching Scarjo self-beauty-conscious act up to that point, focusing on looking pretty pretty pretty, the rawness and actual acting of Penelope looked all the more phenomenal. Hey, there’s a notion an actress who’s face actually moves!
Penelope Cruz is no doubt a good actress. I liked VCB a lot. Doubt, however, was a very strong movie with insanely strong acting.
That is so funny that you saw VCB last night…I just watched it on Friday night w/ my mom (& a bottle of wine! :) on demand too!! I really had no idea what the movie was about, except for the fact that Penelope won an Oscar, which I also agree she didn’t deserve. It was a good movie, but I didn’t like how Rebecca Hall’s character “settled” in the end, it kinda irked me! haha Anywho, Trent I hope that you feel better & have a good rest of the weekend!! :)
Agreed on every account. I thought the movie was alight… just WAY over hyped and totally not Oscar worthy.. sorry.
I haven’t been a fan of Scarjo since Match Point. I think she isnt that great and i boycott everything she is in now. lol but i do really wanna see Vicky Christina Barcelona…ill give it a shot.
watch out, Trent! i had the exact same symptoms about a week ago and i thought i was fine by the next day … then i felt even WORSE the day after because i actually got up and moved around. turned out, i had the flu and was out of school for a week, not being about to move.
so, if i were you, i would take a few days off and not do much of anything. just in case.
feel better!!
I completely agree with everyone here! VCB was alright, and none of the performances were that great, save for Penelope. Was it Oscar worthy? Meh. Sorta. Anywhoo, hope you feel better Trent! Drink lots of fluid and take it easy!
scarlett always sucks.
I hope you feel better soon Trent. There’s some nasty stuff floating around out there this year.
thank you — most overrated movie of the year. i can’t believe she got an oscar for it. ridic!
My mother thought the movie sucked. I guess she was right.
An average movie made worse with the weird guy talking over it explaining pointless things and the one song they had as a soundtrack in every other scene. Drove me INSANE!
