Last month we learned that musician M.I.A. who performed on the Grammy Awards on her due date gave birth to a baby boy and a few days after we got our first look at the little darling. At the time, no name was revealed … until now. Latina.com reports that M.I.A. opted for a baby name that is more of the Zuma Nesta Rock variety rather than the Samuel Sammy Kai … ie. the kid’s name is a bit weird:

We’re big fans of M.I.A. at the Latina offices. BIG fans. We love her so much, we even thought her outfit at the Grammys was awesome. So we just had to share the news when we found out the name of her baby son with fiance Benjamin Brewer. He was born February 11, just days after M.I.A.’s Grammy performance, and his name—which we have to admit, has left us scratching our heads—is… Ickitt. Yes, you read right. The boy’s name is Ickitt. And as a result, Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam takes the cake for coming up with the most original celeb baby name ever. Did you expect anything less? Congrats, M.I.A.!
Well … to be honest, I kinda expected that M.I.A. would choose a more unique name rather than a traditional name like John or Joe. As far as I can tell from my limited research, I don’t think that Ickitt shares his name with anyone else which is prolly what M.I.A. was going for. In any event, Much Lurve and Congratulations goes out to M.I.A. and daddy Benjamin Brewer Bronfman on the expansion of their family. Welcome to the world, Ickitt!
UPDATE: M.I.A. has updated her official My Space blog with a post refuting that she named her son Ickitt … she writes:

Oh my gosh! I thought that was a noise you were making in reaction to him name, rather than his actual name.
That kid is doomed his names rhymes with Kick it
@Jadedkitten –LOLOLOLOL!
This kid has the name “ick” in it. Shittiest. Name. Ever. Just give up. ..
That kid is going to be traumatized. Do people think about their children or just themselves when they name them? STUPID!
Do we know if it means anything? Other than a sucky name to give your offspring . . .
his nickname will be Icky.
Hahahaha I hope he pulls this off!!!
I first read that as ‘Lick It’. I don’t know which one I prefer.
Before we judge… I’m sure this name has some sort of cultural significance. She is British, but her family is Sri Lankan and she lived there for a while, so maybe that’s where the name came from…? However, I knew an Australian whose last name was Ickitt, so who the heck knows.
Hahaha. Now that’s an unfortunate name. Icky, lick it, kick it, picket… that boy won’t be happy when he grows old enough to realise how much mommy screwed him over :’)
I agree with Lin, it could easily have some sort of cultural significance. Let’s face it, if you just saw the name “Mathangi” without knowing anything about the person, you’d think it was just a strange name.
you know…i was never expecting a “normal” name from MIA for some reason..
oh poor kid, his name’s gonna be the laughing stock of the playground
“Kick It’ Hehehe thats good.

M.I.A. just updated her blog saying that its not the babys name… thankfully!
I’d be very surprised if Ickitt has any significant cultural meaning in Sri Lankan.
Ickitt? What? Why????? Why???? Why??????????????? I think Bronx Mowgli has been outdone. And I’m ashamed.
Trent, M.I.A. wrote a message on her blog saying that the baby’s name is not Ickitt! Yay, let’s hope it isn’t worse!!
That isnt the name per YAHOO
According to M.I.A, he’s NOT named Ickitt. Which is a good thing in my oppinion. She happens to hate the name as well. Source:
