Juan Antonio Bayona Will Direct ‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’
Sorry, Drew

Drew Barrymore is out and Juan Antonio Bayona, protégé of the amazing Mexican director Guillermo del Toro, is in! Variety is reporting that Summit Entertainment has decided to pass on letting Drew Barrymore direct the third movie in the Twilight Saga and has opted to hire Baoyna who last directed the creepily beautiful movie The Orphanage. The Twilight Saga’s Eclipse will now be filmed under his direction:

Summit Entertainment has tapped Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona to direct “Eclipse,” the third pic in the “Twilight” vampire series. Summit, which had no comment Wednesday, is expected to make the official announcement soon. The minimajor recently gave “Eclipse” a release date of June 30, 2010. Bayona’s a protege of Guillermo Del Toro. He directed the Spanish-language horror-thriller “The Orphanage,” which was exec produced by Del Toro, and is attached to helm the Universal thriller “Hater,” with Del Toro and Mark Johnson producing. Summit’s opted for a different director on each “Twilight” pic. Chris Weitz replaced “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke on “New Moon.” Production’s due to start shortly on “New Moon” with the key thesps — Robert Pattinson as Edward, Kristen Stewart as Bella and Taylor Lautner as Jacob — reprising their roles. “New Moon” is set to open Nov. 20. Melissa Rosenberg, who penned the “Twilight” and “New Moon” scripts, is working on “Eclipse,” in which Bella is forced to choose between Edward and Jacob. The four books in Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” series have sold more than 17 million copies worldwide.

Love this … while the idea of Drew Barrymore directing a film like this was marginally interesting, I think handing over the duty to someone with a darker aesthetic like Bayona will work better for the film. If any of y’all saw The Orphanage (which I saw with Darion in February of 2008), you know it was pretty dark and creepy … I’m sure much of his vision will be brought to the world of Twilight for Eclipse. What a great boon for this relatively new and unknown director. This idea of hiring different directors for each of the movies feels very much like what WB did for the Harry Potter films. I love how the second installment of the franchise hasn’t even been filmed yet and we’re already talking about the third film. No word on what the studio’s plans for the fourth film, Breaking Dawn, are at this point. Spring 2011? At the rate they are planning to churn out these movies, we should be hearing about that film very soon.

I loved these books very much! Truth be told Eclipse was def a little boring though ;) It does make me a lil nervous how freakn fast they are moving on these movies! I’m with you we should be hearing about Breaking Dawn the movie soon. Maybe next week!

wow you thought it was boring??? Eclipse is my favorite! I havent finished the 4th yet though….im about 150 pages in.

Oh awesome! I’m very excited for this. I’ve heard good things about him. At least summit is being smart with their directors, even if they are rushing things. Hopefully he can make Eclipse interesting, I found it sort of slow. Definitely just felt like filler…New Moon is my fav, I sort of wish he was directing it now instead of Chris since i think its darker.

I think they need to make these movies as soon as possible to keep the momentum flowing properly. Sure, if they wait, it may cause fans to get more hyped up but since the franchise is mostly based on teens, they have to do it fast. We all know things can be “IT” in one moment and “out” the next. I’m glad Drew Barrymore isn’t directing, no offense. : )

Though I can’t vouch for Drew’s directing talents…she was pretty good as Exec. Producer for Donnie Darko, no?

@ Elo – really? I thought Eclipse was quite good but it kind of dragged on from New Moon but I liked it nonetheless. I read the first three books in 3 in a half days. I then started reading Breaking Dawn and somewhere before the middle of the book I absolutely hated it. I just wanted to throw it outside my window and run it over. I didn’t even read the book for two days because it made me so mad… after two days went by I started to read it forcing myself to just because I wanted to finish it. In the end, it was okay, but I feel like it could have went a lot of different directions that would’ve resulted in a better ending than it did. Oh well.

Eclipse imo… will be the hardest of all to bring to life especially with the battle at the end, it is gonna have lots more effects needed and i can’t wait to see it translated on to the big screen. eclipse is my fave of the 4 books and am nervous about a new director taking the helm… but hopefully it will be great!!!

Twilight and Eclipse were my favorites of the 4 books. I agree that the beginning of Eclipse was kind of slow, but I like how the rest of the story played out. Don’t even get me started on Breaking Dawn. I know they are cheesy love story books written for teenagers, (which happen to be my guilty pleasure) but come on!

I am excited to see where Bayona goes with Eclipse, because I really enjoyed ‘The Orphanage’. It was so creepy!

with the battle at the end of Eclipse..they picked the right director..cause its gunna need to be darker. i think he should do alright.

I’m sort of tired of hearing about the twilight movies. Its sort of like that song that is over played XD
But I do think that the choice in director was a good one.

@razzle dazzle-lol, she isn’t going to read what you wrote, and as this page stats; she won’t be directing it.

I’m very happy hearing about this new director. Before Chris Weitz was named as the director for New Moon I thought Guillermo del Toro would make a fab director…so I’m quite pleased that Bayona is taking it on as his protege. The Orphanage was really good and creepy, so it’s quite promising for Eclipse to be good as well.

Idon’t think this is right any more.
