James Franco Beings To ‘Howl’

On the set of his new movie
March 20th, 2009

Here are a couple photos of actor James Franco, who we last saw in the films Milk and Pineapple Express, on the NYC set of his new movie Howl. James plays famed Beat poet Allen Ginsberg in the film that tells the tale of the obscenity trial that took place in the 1950’s that attempted to censor his now classic poem Howl:

While Jack Kerouac is my fave writer from the Beat generation, I’ve read quite a bit of Ginsberg’s poetry, including Howl, and absolutely love the idea of James Franco playing the poet. This would be the second role in a year where Franco plays a gay man … are we beginning to see a pattern? I absolutely hope so :) After the jump, check out a few more pics of Franco on the Howl set this week …

Aww … James looks adorable in those glasses. Tho, I must admit he looks like a really idealized version of the real Allen Ginsberg (who prolly would’ve had much more luck seducing his male crushes if he had had Franco’s looks). What a great idea for a film! I’m curious to see who will be cast in the roles of Ginsberg’s friends Kerouac, Neal Cassady and William S. Burroughs. This is a movie that I will deffo see in theaters. I’ve read about Allen Ginsberg’s love of his Beat friends, I hope that that part of his life will be portrayed in the film as well.

He was filming on Staten Island on Wednesday, which is where I live. Needless to say, I was so upset when I found out after he was done here. But if I go to the set tomorrow, I shall get some pics to share with you!

he’s a brat, he hasn’t a drop of the depth of ginsberg. good lord. he was probably only hired because of the buzz from Milk.
