‘Glamour’ Magazine Salutes Female American Icons
American icons like pilot Amelia Earhart, athlete Brandi Chastain, First Lady Michelle Obama and the inspirational symbol of female empowerment Rosie the Riveter (who was based on a real woman named Rose Will Monroe) are honored in the new issue of Glamour magazine which has enlisted a group of young Hollywood starlet to portray various female American icons in an amazing new photo shoot. Here is a photo of Lindsay Lohan’s homage to Madonna:
You can do anything! That’s the message of the seven decades of female risk takers, rule breakers and style makers here. We celebrate them with the help of some very-2009 young talents.

Alexis Bledel as Rosie the Riveter
In 1942 the U.S. government commissioned the “We Can Do It!” poster, which featured an image of a character who became known as Rosie the Riveter. Her biceps-revealing shirtsleeves and determined look were meant to motivate American women to step out of the kitchen and into the factory to replace the men who had been pressed into service during World War II. And millions did just that, paving the way for us to pull down paychecks more than 60 years later. “She’s a symbol of women getting things done. America Ferrera as Dolores Huerta
A fierce advocate for migrant farmers, Huerta cofounded, with César Chávez, what became the United Farm Workers of America. Hayden Panettiere as Amelia Earhart
In 1932 Earhart—with her leather jacket, scarf and close-cropped hair—became the first female aviator to fly a solo transatlantic flight, redefining expectations of women along the way. Though the 39-year-old disappeared in 1937 during a flight around the world, she still serves as a reminder of female fearlessness. “She proved that anything is possible. I absolutely love these photos! Again, such a great idea for Glamour to feature this tribute to American icons. While I have MAD LOVE for the fictional character of Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City, I’m not sure I would list her with some of these other amazing and truly iconic women but Emma Stone portrays her in this issue of Glamour mag. These are awesome!! I really like Hayden’s picture of her being Amelia. What a cool spread. I actually kind of want to buy the magazine and just have it. To be honest, LLO’s picture is my least favorite. The one of her on her back looks good but the last picture above just doesn’t sit right with me.

Awww..I love that they have Elisha Cuthbert as Brandi Chastain..What an amazing day for women soccer players that was! Sorry, but I really don’t see how Michelle Obama is an icon, but whatever..Everyone is so up the Obamas’ asses it doesn’t surprise me..

I am not sure that Michelle Obama deserves the status as an “icon.” I think that it can happen, but she has not proven herself yet.

I love both Alexis and America, they look INCREDIBLE. I agree with Jill, the women of Woodstock picture is hillarious. I would’ve narrowed in on a particular woman, (i.e. Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, or Jane Fonda) but even then, they look like fashion models (pretty antithetical to the unworldy views of the 60’s).

Totally agree about Carrie Bradshaw. Even as a fictional character, she is not a strong female (in my eyes) by any means. They could have picked an actual writer, like Gloria Steinam.

You know what annoys me the most?
While all the actresses talk about who they are portraying, Lindsay Lohan is, once again, talking about herself —

Lindsay as Madonna????? *barf* I look more like Madonna than she does!! And “when she was little” she’d dance around to Immaculate Collection? LOL -you mean a collection of HITS, after she’d been around for a decade or more??? When I was “little”, I danced around to Madonna’s FIRST hits – Borderline, Lucky Star, etc.

PixieBassline – Lindsay is only 22 … The Immaculate Collection came out in 1990. Lindsay could not enjoy Madonna’s early work, as she was not born until 1986.

I have to agree with some others about Michelle Obama. I hardly think she is an “icon”. Like someone else said, perhaps one day, but as of now she’s barely accomplished anything. She went to Princeton and Harvard Law, which are certainly wonderful achievements, but many other women have achieved that very same goal.
I am sure that she will achieve many things while First Lady, but let’s not jump the gun and call her an “icon” just yet.

WOW I think that this was an amazing idea. I do agree about the Michelle Obama picture, she hasn’t done anything to change history…yet. I think people need to get off that train already (yes, I’m an avid Obama supporter, but I’m not a sheep, either).

cool idea, though I don’t agree with all of them (Michelle Obama doesn’t qualify as icon status…yet. She has the oppertunity though depending on what she does next). I also don’t get some of the hollywood starlet choices…Lindsey? Really? She is not even really a singer and she jumps at any chance to portray one. I LOVE the idea of Alexis as Rosie.

I think they coulda found someone who looked more like Madonna than Lindsay…. Lindsay doesn’t look anywhere close to even slightly resembling Madonna, to me. I don’t think she looks anything like M.Monroe either.

Moni – If you’ve been in a relationship with a woman (for years), your living with her, your sleeping with her, (going to work with her!), joined at the hip basically 24/7 – You ARE a lesbian … Just because Lindsay won’t publically embrace the label doesn’t mean she’s not a lesbian, or she is “pretending to be a lesbian just to be in the tabloids”. Lindsay will be in the tabloids no matter what. Lindsay loves Sam – Sam loves Lindsay. People need to deal with that.
