First Look: The Frog Prince

Meet the hero of Disney's 'The Princess and the Frog'
March 17th, 2009

In January, we got our latest look at the protagonist heroine of Disney’s new animated feature The Princess and the Frog which, as you all should know by now, is Disney’s first Black princess. Today, we get our first look at her prince in the movie … he’s the guy that she saves (a la Belle in Beauty and the Beast) in the upcoming animated feature:

While some short-sighted people may take issue with Princess Tiana and her handsome Prince Naveen, I absolutely applaud Disney’s decision to pair these two characters together in a romantic relationship. After the jump, check out what Prince Naveen looks like, er, when he’s not a frog …

It has been a year of firsts for black Americans, most notably with Barack Obama becoming the first black president and his wife as the First Lady. That trend is set to continue as Disney prepares to release its first animated film featuring a black princess. Called ‘The Princess and the Frog’, the musical has an African-American called Princess Tiana as the main character. Her eagerly-awaited appearance will be the first time the company has chosen to have a black princess in the lead role. Since the fairy tale characters first appeared in ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ in 1937, all but two of the Disney princesses have been white. A Native American princess was featured in ‘Pocahontas’ and Jasmine, a Middle Eastern princess, in ‘Aladdin.’ But until Princess Tiana there had yet to be a true black princess among the roster of animated characters. Critics have hailed Disney’s decision, saying it reflects modern America. But the task of creating the film, which will be released at Christmas, has not been without controversy. The latest centres on the decision to make Princess Tiana’s love interest appear white. The character is called Prince Naveen of Maldonia and is voiced by Brazilian actor Bruno Campos. But in photographs from the film just released by Disney some argue that he looks white. Viewers in African American internet chat rooms and blogs have slammed Disney for not having a black prince, complaining that having a white prince set out the wrong message. One wrote: “I think its sad that he is white because its saying that black love isn’t good enough and that black men could never be princes. Disney had the perfect chance to make its first black prince, but instead it decided to go the controversial route.” Another complained: “I am very disappointed and I wished Disney would of made the prince black -and the ironic thing is the prince in the movie is white but the evil voodoo villain is voiced by a black actor and is black.” Since announcing their plans for the first black princess in 2006 the production of Hollywood studio’s 49th animated film has been dogged by controversy. Originally called The Frog Princess, its heroine was to be a chambermaid called Maddy working for a spoilt white debutante in 1920s New Orleans. But it sparked a backlash from critics who claimed it reinforced prejudice and demeaned black people. Even the setting and story for the film, the French Quarter of New Orleans in the 1920s, was questioned as it had overtones of voodoo and slavery. Disney has insisted its choice of a black princess is to give their characters as much diversity as possible … Anika Noni Rose, the actress who voices the character of Princess Tiana, has insisted that people should look beyond the colour of the character. “Not only is she the first black princess, she’s the first American princess. We’ve never had an American princess,” said Rose. “The scope and the significance is larger than people even realize.” Rose has starred in ‘Dreamgirls’ but is best known in Britain as the officious secretary Grace in the new BBC series ‘The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency’. The film also features the voice of chat show queen Oprah Winfrey as Tiana’s mother called Eudora and is scheduled for release in December. Although set in 1920s New Orleans it is an adaptation of the classic tale The Frog Prince. In the Disney version Prince Naveen is turned into a frog by a voodoo magician and asks Princess Tiana to kiss him to break the spell. But she turns into a frog and the pair must reverse the spell, while in fairy tale tradition, fall in love.

It’s really unfortunate that things always have to come back to skin color … even with something as seemingly light-hearted as a children’s animated film. On the one hand, I suppose I can see the point of some critics that feel that it is also time for an Black prince to be featured in an Disney film. For me, tho, the fact that the characters are of different races expresses that love knows no color. In the end, it is impossible to please everyone … no matter what changes are made to the story, someone will take issue with something. I think I’d rather celebrate the arrival of Disney’s first Black princess rather than find something else to be bitter and angry about. Princess Tiana and Prince Naveen make a very hawt couple, don’t you think?

  1. Nicole Says:

I think they made Prince Naveen look too much like Gaston from Beauty and the Beast. It’s the eyebrows, they are just too much. The princess is beautiful, I wish she had a prince who didn’t feel recycled from another movie. But I love the Disney Princesses and will totally go see this.

  2. nat Says:

Damn, when I read the name I was like” Naveen Andrews”is in this?, but then I saw the prince and yeah, well, he should look like Naveen-then I might actually go see this.

  3. patches Says:

the “black” prince looks pretty white to me??

  4. nat Says:

Actually, the more I look at this dude he is the kind of guy that needs to be left at the curb. And I should root for her to get with him? I don’t think so-she could do so much better..like….see above

  5. Z Says:

Well, compared to princess Tiana he looks kind of light but I don’t think he looks totally white. He looks a little like a beefy Obama if you ask me. ;) Either way, I think both characters are very attractive.

  6. steve-o Says:

What I’m most excited for is the fact that Disney is going back to their roots and using hand animation again. But why did they have to make Prince Naveen look like a mix of Zac Effron and Gaston!

  7. Karly Says:

not the most handsome face no? there are some way better looking animated characters out there. John Smith was pretty good you know? Oh well

  8. bip Says:

Well he is a pretty tan white guy then. Could be a high yellow… I think the point about the villains being voiced by black actors is more sinister in intention. It seems to be a pattern in Disney movies.

  9. Amy Says:

I don’t think he looks white. He has almost a light brown tone to he’s skin. Sure he’s not as black as Tiana but he is not as white as say prince charming

  10. Christie Says:

The prince looks more hispanic than anything else, maybe mediterranean……IDK

  11. Cassie Says:

I think it’s neat that they’ve chosen to make neither of the main characters caucasian! To be honest, this impresses me more than matching her with an African American prince; they are a mixed race couple! Frankly, I think it’s a solid move on Disney’s part, particularly after the hostility that’s existed in this part of the world toward ceratin areas in the middle East.

  12. Erica Says:

I don’t think the price looks all that “white” more hispanic or middle eastern really.

  13. MFlip Says:

He looks hispanic to me? Trent, when you first posted this I thought it was going to be prejudice white people upset about biracial relationships, but I was wrong, it was the African American community upset. It boggles my mind that African-Americans are complaining about this…isnt Barack Obama proof that color isnt important? We are all equal, and beautiful. And Disney is one of the most open and diverse companies in the world, I am sure they didnt mean to offend anyone.

  14. joe Says:

    He totally looks like Gaston!

  15. AmyM Says:

He definitely looks like a Brazillian dude to me…if a tad generic.

  16. nat Says:

I finaly figured out who he remids me of, besides Gaston,
Christian Ronaldo…..but now quite as tanned!
I’m not sure how I feel about that…..

  17. adybabe0 Says:

I totally applaud the interracial coupling. Times call for more open mindedness.

  18. Jane Says:

Hahaha if you kinda squint your eyes when looking at him he looks like Mario Lopez

  19. Ali_di Says:

@adybabe0… I totally agree… why does a ‘black’ princess need a ‘black’ prince…. isn’t it time we saw fairy tales for what they are not make them into a racially charged situation. Does it really matter what race any character is in a disney film… growing up, all i ever had was ‘white’ princess dolls and ‘white’ barbies, it never once made me think that my race was less than that of my dolls… my dolls were just different than me. I think as adults we need to stop focusing on things and see how children’s perceptions are not our own… personally I don’t care if princess Tiana had a blue prince with yellow eyes and orange hair… as long as it’s a positive message i’m fine with any child in my family seeing the film, regardless of race of the characters!

  20. Danielle Says:

Ha, I second Nat in that he looks kinda like Cristiano Ronaldo. And I also agree with Trent, it’s showing interracial love. That’s a good thing. Maybe Disney’s next film will be about a black prince :)

  21. Rachel Says:

who gives a shit if he’s white, black, asian, ugly, short, fat, whatever. he’s her prince. that’s it, stop bitching. his skin color doesn’t matter. i completeley agree with trent in the fact that it shows that love knows no color. if the prince had been black, people would’ve said, “oh, so they made the prince black just cause the princess is black” or something along those lines of stupidity. you cannot please everybody. but i don’t care. i think it’s awesome that theres finally a black princess, the prince looks cool too. whatever his skin color. stop making everything freaking racial.

  22. Apples v 2 Says:

Gooo interracial marriage! :) As a product of such, there’s never any harm. Personally, he looks like he’s got some kinda mix in there.

  23. EmCee Says:

If it has to be an issue…I’m sick of seeing movie after movie where the black girl ends up with the black guy. I don’t understand why they are always like that, so I really like that there is finally an interracial couple in something! The only other movies I can recall like this are Rachel Getting Married and The Family Stone. That I’ve seen, anyways..but really, I’d rather have it not matter.

  24. Bri Says:

As a black person I am NOT upset at all that the prince is white. I could care less. I’ve loved the disney princesses forever, regardless of race, in fact Belle is my favorite, and when they announced Tiana, I got very exceted because it represented me and even more now because I don’t care about “color” in realtionships. I care about whats inside, how they treat me. I think people need to grow up these days. Even Barack Obama, I wasn’t even going to vote for him at first. The race of my president doesn’t matter, its what the president plans to do that matters. Its a shame that peopleare so ignorant these days. Its 2009, people!

  25. Sassy_Girl Says:

As a person of color….I LIKE Prince Naveen…I am all for the different colors of love..he doesn’t look white to me…he actually looks like my friend Asi…who is African American.. and has the same coloring as Prince Naveen…I mean if there are any people of color upset over the way he looks…then they need to relax because last time I checked we come in all shades of brown…plus there is nothing wrong with a lil interracial lovin’ ;-)

  26. Blair Says:

I cant believe im about to comment on a fictional couple, but i think its great that disney are introducing a black princess and her (greek?) prince. I think its disapointing that people still have to find something wrong with it. Im sure there will be plenty of little girls looking up to princess Tiana.

  27. jessica Says:

I wish Nat, a fellow commenter had said “for them to get each other” not her to “get him” which reinforces stereotypes that women need to “get” men. What about the other way around? Is it possible, just like this movie where he needs her help, that we should root for “him to get her” in the end?

  28. jessica Says:

Further… MFlip comments that Disney is so tolerant (“Disney is one of the most open and diverse companies in the world, I am sure they didnt mean to offend anyone.”) but they still do not/ refuse to let gay couples get married in the same main ballroom as straight couples! Doesn’t sound so wonderful and tolerant….
Walt Disney was extremely prejudice when it came to racial and religious issues (Lots of claims that he was a Fascist) and if one looks to the really old movies, race was extremely evident through image, sound and subject. (ex. Dark skinned lady going through the marketplace buying fruits, listen for the music the studio chose to place or 1932’s “The Wayward Canary,” in which Mickey is seen using a cigarette lighter with a swastika painted on one of the sides etc).

  29. Amar Says:

NAVEEN is an INDIAN name. Why would there be an Indian prince in New Orleans back then? Makes no sense.

  30. Madsme Says:

I agree COMPLETELY with you, Trent. I was dreading seeing Disney come out with a black prince – I think we only EVER see black couples or white couples – not inter-racial couples. I think this sends out a much stronger message. There’s lots of time for a black prince (and we’ve got Obama in the meantime :)

  31. caroline Says:

i dont like it..im sorry i dont… i aproved the interracial love and everythign but i thing the princess is kinda ugly

  32. Sara Says:

So, I agree with all the people that say this is not a big deal. We need to wait for the movie to really see what it’s like, but who cares even if he is totally white? I’m half and half and my husband is white… people come in all colors and can love each other the same!

  33. Aislin Says:

I hate how in films, TV, etc the hot black girl always goes out with a hot black guy, even in modern things like Ghost Whisperer, inter-racial couples aren’t portrayed. Good on Disney.
    For once

  34. schmee Says:

Question. There are only two non-white princesses, Pocahantas and Jasmine? What about Mulan?

Or am I off my rocker?

  35. g Says:

I am really excited for this movie…but the animation looks a lot different than other princess movies..

  36. Wendy Says:

Couldn’t it be that he’s of mixed race? I mean creole in itself is a mixture of race. Plus the movie is set in New Orleans.

I do think it would have been nice to see a black prince but if it had been a black prince and the evil guy was white wouldn’t that also have had racial overtones?

When people are looking for something negative to say they’ll find wrong with something or other.

Couldn’t we just be glad that its racially diverse and including people instead of excluding people?
(and how about we see a latina princess? or they include mulan as an asian princess? )

  37. kittycatastrophe Says:

I’m a black female and I don’t have any problem with Prince Naveen’s appearance. The Frog Princess is supposed to be set in New Orleans from what I understand. In the 19th century multi-racial people and interracial relationships weren’t unheard of and women of color would be introduced to suitors, mostly white, at Cotillions or balls. That being said, some folks need to move into the 21st century.

  38. Fashionista Says:

Um, I don’t care about the appearance at all of Prince Naveen. Interracial love y’all. Its pretty kick ass. ITS ABOUT DAMN TIME they had a sista on Disney. Hell, even when I was a kid, I would notice and tell my mum why there aren’t any black princesses. That prince is pretty fine haha. And I agree w/ g….the animation looks a bit different from the other movies.

  39. la princesa Says:

It’s about time, sure….I’m waiting on a Latina.

  40. J to tha Da Says:

I honestly don’t think he’s even white. The film is set in old school New Orleans, he’s probably a Lousiana Creole. As others have already mentioned.

  41. Janelle Says:

the media wants some fucking dramatic bull to shit about. they need to shut the fuck up and stop being hypocritical.

  42. Traci Says:

I don’t know what race he’s supposed to be, but it certainly isn’t white. Indian, Native American, Hispanic, light-skinned African-American, all are possibilities. But he doesn’t even look like he’d be from one of the more “ethnic” looking Caucasian groups, like Italians, Greeks, etc.

  43. razzle dazzle Says:

    I am a disney freak!!

  44. shazz Says:

for a second he reminded me of that guy Miley Cyrus is dating..

  45. megan Says:

Gaston meets Aladdin; regardless I’m going to see it.

  46. wishinchick Says:

I haven’t been on any fan blogs or websites, so I can’t say I’ve seen the comments firsthand, but this article’s use of the word “outraged” seems ridiculous to me. I think that some people are really disappointed more than anything else. Is it terrible that it’s a white prince? No. Would it have killed Disney to feature two A-A characters in love in its first movie featuring an A-A princess? Surely not. Rarely is black love broadcast to mainstream America.

Furthermore, your use of the term “short sighted” people and “bitter and angry” is rather disheartening as these are terms that are often used when POC express there point of view. It comes off as very dismissive of POC feelings (and yes, I know you’re a POC too).

If skin color weren’t such a big deal as many say, Disney would’ve had
an AA princess long ago, no?

Nonetheless, I’m happy that the movie is being made…

  47. Kristel Says:

Race doesn’t exist! There are so many different tones of different colours human can have. Who has the right to draw lines somewhere? We are all of one race – the human race. And we look so diverse because we have lived for thousands of years in such different climate conditions. We are like brothers and sisters of a single family, all a tad different from our siblings. There’s an article by Naomi Zack that explains this a bit better than I have. Can’t remember what it was called. “Race in anthropological perspective” or something like that. I highly recommend it! Might make someone’s world a whole lot bigger

Anyways… as for the characters: the princesse is gorgeous, the prince not so much. He looks a bit sleazy! :P

  48. B Says:

I think an interracial couple actually sends a great message. The people who actually CARE enough about this to get pissed clearly don’t have enough real issues to deal with. I think Disney would have been criticized if their first black princess was paired with a black prince by another set of people. When you are dealing with race, you definitely are not going to please everyone. Case in point—I teach in a high school with a large AA population and many of my AA students said “Obama wasn’t ‘black’ enough” to be president which was the craziest thing I have ever heard. But it does illustrate that you aren’t going to make everyone happy.

  49. Naomi Says:

This is interesting because Naveen is typically an East Indian name, so when I saw the picture at first I thought the prince was Indian!

I really don’t think the Prince looks white to be honest…true, he doesn’t look African American but definitely not white. I’m sticking to the prince being from India! lol :)

  50. Samantha Says:

he looks like an ass. Gaston was a prick, and this newbie looks the same!
I could care less about skin colour. Aladdin was cute, what happened to Naveen??

  51. Sus Says:

He definitely looks Indian. Sadly, he also looks like a douche. Where is Prince Eric and Aladdin? They were definitely the hottest.

  52. Mish Says:

all colour and race issues aside, I personally think that the prince looks like a Jerk. he looks super cheesy with that mischevious grin. Not wholesome and earnest like the other princes – Prince Eric, Aladdin, Mulan’s Prince etc. I thought Captain Shang was the best looking disney prince. :)

  53. smash Says:

as a mixed race person, i dont think it matters what the prince looks like, bring on the interracial romance! there needs to be more of it in hollywood, i always think. im in an interracial relationship myself (im dating a white jewish guy lol), and i think its a beautiful thing, kudos to disney!

  54. Eboney Says:

Since I am married to a White man and I am a Black woman I applaud this movie being made with this character because it shows that love knows no bounds. Instead of people being so upset about it why not applaud Disney for taking a stand that no other animated movie has done, that I have seen. Children learn more about love from their homes and families then they do in movies so they should really calm down.

  55. SalvadorDalí Says:

wow, there are a lot of comments….I was going to say the same thing about Naveen being an Indian name. ;) I think it cute…and I think my people (black people) need to shut up already and enjoy the film for what it is and what its going to be.

  56. kait Says:

aaghhhh. Pocahontas was not a princess!!! They also left out Mulan, but then again she wasn’t a princess either.

  57. Meghan Says:

I think he looks Hispanic, but then, he should have a more Hispanic/Spanish name. Naveen is Indian, it doesn’t fit. I can see the story–he’s a frog, they fall in love, he turns into a prince and surprise! Will her family accept him?

  58. Jackie Says:

Yeah, I was thinking about Mulan, too, but I realized that she isn’t a princess (and Shang wasn’t a prince) though they did help out the Emperor (and his princesses in Mulan II, hahaha).

Pocahontas was the daughter of the chief, so she was close to a princess as you could get IMO. Though I realize now that Pocahontas didn’t exactly have a fairy-tale ending.. which is what makes it such a great movie!

  59. . Says:

People need to get over it! What, can’t there be any interracial love? Anyways the prince looks Latino

  60. Siddy Says:

I’m fine with it. People are always going to find a reason to complain. I don’t think he’s white or Indian or whatever. I think he’s a light skinned black male. So what if he’s lighter than her? Are light skinned black faces not allowed to be represented? It’s cool that she’s a darker tone and that he’s a lighter tone. Oh, and the villain being black isn’t that controversial… If they’d used a white villain you would know that they were overcompensating. Some people are over analysing. Just enjoy this movie of firsts and the fact that they’ve gone back to 2D animation!

  61. Aliy Says:

I can see both sides to the story.I haven’t seen a disney cartoon(movie) with a black couple in it. I personaly think that they dont want to make a black prince just yet.I hope the movie does well. :)

  62. Siddy Says:

And if he turns out to be Indian… Great!

  63. Syrina Says:

    I absolutely love their outfits!
I hope Naveen has this hideous, arrogant grin just for this picture, and in the movie is more charming…
And I love that Disney included a interracial romance in their new movie!

  64. L.R Says:

wow- that article is WRONG. WHAT ABOUT MULAN??? The ASIAN heroine??? Yet again, Asian people get left out as unimportant. What about the Asian Prince?? Gawd, he was hawt!! Yet nobody seems to remember them.

I love the interacial couple, but I was suprised. Seems more like it should be a black prince and white princess…I don’t see too many black girl/white guy combos.

  65. N Says:

Like the other person said…I have a mixed raace child, and I can’t wait for him to see a mixed race couple in a major movie and for his bratty friends to see it too! Maybe it will tone down on the “why are your parents different?” questions!!

I’m white and I loooove my Asian man!

  66. Mrs Luz Says:

no problems whatsoever, except the fact that he looks a bit kooky :)

  67. Bec Says:

The prince looks ugly… Disney princes are supposed to be hot like Aladdin and Prince Eric : P

  68. Petra Says:

I think the prinses looks Beautifull! :-) and her dress also.
But the prince is’nt my type . ;-)

  69. Laine Says:

the smile disturbs me. A LOT.

  70. Georjie Says:

I swear, he looks like one of the tenors from IL DIVO…he, too has that cheesy+creepy smile…and that hair! Check it out if you don’t believe me…

    http://www.wallpapergate.com/data/medi/1714/Il_Divo_003.jpg

BTW, totally on board w/ the interracial coupling!

  71. Heather Says:

I really don’t think the prince looks flat out “white”. There are many different skin tones in every ethnicity, so who’s to say that the prince isn’t simply a light-skinned African American? People just love to complain, love a controversy-if it wasn’t this it would have been something else.

  72. Jessica Says:

As a black female with two black little girls it would have been nice to have a story where the princess can find someone that was also black or just a person of color. This reminds me too much of when Hitch came out and they made the claim that they didn’t choose a black actress because no one wants to see two black people fall in love. It looks like movie makers are reinforcing this attitude with our children.

  73. Beth Says:

Holy crap, whoever wrote that article needs to do their research. There were THREE non-white princesses before this one….”Mulan”, anyone? And there have been American princesses before – hello, Pochahantas is Native-AMERICAN. Jeebus.

Yay to the Prince choice though. Dude definitely doesn’t look white. Mixed-race couples are A-OK!

  74. Casey Says:

As a black mother with a young daughter, I do have a slight issue with the prince being so “light”. I don’t believe it’s something to get completely worked up over, but I am concerned. My daughter doesn’t even like to play with brown skinned dolls. She thinks that lighter complexions are “better”. I think in a small way, this is another image for her to continue believing in that idea. However, I still have to applaud Disney for their efforts….and am anticipating the movie’s release. I’ll still be taking her to see the movie and continue to encourage her to see that all skin colors are beautiful and that one color is not better than the other.

  75. Aimee Says:

Um, white?? With the name Naveen? He looks Middle Eastern to me and the name matches that as well. He really doesn’t look white, altho the facial features are VERY much like Gaston.

  76. Rachel Says:

Oh God, here we go. People getting their panties in a twist over the most trivial things. Maybe we should wait to see the movie before we start all the judgements. geez..

  77. Disney mom Says:

You forgot a third princess who was Asian, Mulan.

  78. Macie Says:

I think the prince looks more Hispanic than white. I mean, John Smith… Prince Charming… Prince Philip… now THEY’RE white.

  79. Fashionista Says:

Let it be. Interracial love y’all. Prince charming can be any race. I actually can’t wait until the movie comes out. We need more U.N. in every source of entertainment. PEACE AND LOVE <3

  80. Nai Says:

Yay I can’t wait to see this!! I love Disney movies! And FWIW, I don’t think Mulan is considered a princess because she didn’t marry a prince. She’s like a military bride or something.

  81. Selene Says:

Unfortunately, people don’t seem to understand that Naveen isn’t white. Naveen is a blatantly middle-eastern name. He even looks middle eastern. he’s NOT white, people!

  82. sonya Says:

i think it has more of an effect with an interracial relationship… its about time there was a black princess!

  83. ddb Says:

i personally think he looks a lot like Kronks from ‘The Emperor’s New Groove’

  84. ricky Says:

he looks like an “all american” football player. I vote for a naveen andrews looking prince.

  85. Windstorm Says:

Princess Tiana is simply gorgeous! :)

I think that a multicultural relationship is just as wonderful as any other relationship. Perhaps they are trying to send the message that people should learn to look at a person’s heart instead of their race.

When it comes to Prince Naveen however, many have stated that he has an “arrogant” look about him. Unfortunately I must say that it’s not too far from the truth if you take a look at some of the earlier concept art, especially the pic where he seemed to be in the middle of the street snobbishly commanding his assistant around.

  86. SHERRY Says:

    You people are silly.
Theres nothing wrong with a wm/bw couple in a disney film.
if hes whatever race should not matter,u silly people.
OMG..people r screwed up…if hes indian/spanish/greek who cares…its not about him anyway..its about princess Tiona!!
    Geesh!

  87. STEF Says:

I think that disney is still living in the fifties, why is it that every fairytale couple was of the same ethnic background, all of a sudden the black princess comes along and she has this dude, and not only that, she kisses the frog ,and she becomes a frog. THAT SOME BULL, How many white princesses you know turned into anything before. I also think that Disney is sending the wrong message to young black kids, basically saying that our young boys cant be princes.

  88. STEF Says:

    I AGREE WITH U JESSICA
