First Look: Brittany Snow As Lily Van Der Woodsen In The ‘Gossip Girl’ Spin-Off
Earlier this year we learned that The CW has green lighted production of a Gossip Girl spin-off series that would focus on GG matriarch character Lily van der Woodsen from her wild child younger days in the 80’s. After buzz about the prequel series died down a bit we learned that Brittany Snow was cast in the role of young Lily van der Woodsen and today we get our first look at Brittany as Lily on the set of the as-yet-untitled GG spin-off project which began filming this week:

Gucci bag? Check. Riding boots and blazer? Check. Porsche convertible? Check her out! It’s the young Lily van der Woodsen! Brittany Snow looked just the part Tuesday as she packed up her Louis Vuitton luggage at the Sip-n-Pump gas station next to Neptune Restaurant in Malibu, Calif. Shooting just began on the new Gossip Girl spin-off, the highly-anticipated back story of Serena’s mom, played by Kelly Rutherford on the CW hit. Snow, 23, plays Lily Rhodes, who is growing up in Los Angeles in the ’80s. The show will chronicle Lily’s “wildchild teenager” days, according to a release from the CW. Former One Tree Hill star Matt Barr was recently cast as Keith van der Woodsen, a rich Malibu prince who is rumored to be Lily’s future husband since her married name is Lily van der Woodsen.
Furthermore: The show will chronicle Lily’s “wildchild teenager” days, according to a release from the CW. That includes her falling out with her parents, her subsequent move to the Valley to live with her black sheep sister and (gasp!) going to public school. This backdoor pilot will air as the May 11 episode of Gossip Girl.
See … I dunno about this. I mean, a prequel TV series that will run concurrently with the original show? While I am interested, somewhat, in the GG characters, I’m not sure that I’m all that interested in an entire backstory history of one of the older characters on the show. I think Lily van der Woodsen is a fabulous character on Gossip Girl but do I really care about her youth? I mean … I guess. The fact that the spin-off series is set in the 80’s has some appeal to me but … I’m not sold just yet. What do y’all think? Is this the spin-off you’d want to see from Gossip Girl?

I’m with you..I would have picked Rufus for the history plot line…rock star with kids and a wife…touring, groupies, paying bills, seems more interesting

hmm.. iono. sounds interesting i guess… i’ll give it a shot..

I say NO SPIN-OFF the show is great as it is…. as Ru would say…. DONT FUCK IT UP!

Lily has a shady past…so I am really looking forward to the spin off. Not to mention I have missed my dear Brittany Snow since “American Dreams” has been over. “Hairspray” was too long ago. I LOVE HER. I think she was a PERFECT cast to play young Lily.

I’m sure they will intro a young Rufus at some point most likely. I’m down with this series, I find the adult plotlines as interesting as the teens if not moreso. I like Snow she’s a capable actress I just hate prequels typically but I will give it a watch.

Psycho Derek! Hahaha… awesome.

I don’t watch GG to begin with but BS looks really cute!!

Doesn’t really look like the 80s to me. Her hair is all wrong! That hair would not have been hot in the decade known for bouffant ‘dos… Even the outfit is wrong. It’s all 80s-esque stuff, but put together to look like someone would wear it now.

I’m more excited now that we know she was in an instuition like her son. Hopefully they will touch on that too. Lily is one of my fav characters on Gossip Girl, or at least the actress is great. Of course I’m like 5 shows behind at the moment.

I’d like it a lot more if it was also set in New York!

I’m looking forward to this! They will definitely do a young Rufus storyline in there to shake things up, I take it Keith is Serena’s Dad, did they every touch on where he is in GG because I can’t remember if they did?

@zachary — nope, the look is totally 80’s preppy and looks about right to me. the 80’s wasn’t all hairspray and new wave
March 11th, 2009 at 12:21 pm
Cant wait to see all the 80’s fashion.

Rufus will definately be in there, hopefully they will explain what happened when she got pregnant and everything with how she chose to marry rich rather for love and continue with the bitchy grandma van der woodsen theme. I think i would watch this, at least for a little while.

I love Britney Snow, but there is only one Lily Van Der Woodsen and she is not it… even if she is the young Lily.
I kind of hope this fails. And…. please do not intertwine the two shows Stephanie Savage! Please Please don’t!
Besides, 80’s?? Wouldn’t Lily have been in High School in the late 70’s and off to college by the 80’s?
There is just so much wrong with this.
What other shows (besides That 70’s Show- which was friggin AWESOME!) were set back in 70’s, 80’s that were successful?

My older cousins dressed like that! :) I’m gonna check it out.
March 11th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
Absolutly! There is such a deep connection between Lily and Rufus, its always being referred to in GG so i’m def looking forward to see how it all started!

I’m not a fan of spin off’s (case in point: Joey. WTF were they thinking?) but i am very curious to find out what went on with her and rufus when they were young. i just recently started watching the show and i’m only on season one, but it seems like there’s a lot there with them. It could be a great romance!

I think it will be fun! I love the Lily character, and can’t wait to see the van der Woodsen guy and young Rufus!

Love the retro Gucci purse.

I don’t know that lily was the character to explore, but i’m willing to give it a chance, given that i love brittany snow, and the wardrobe is sure to impress.

I love Brittany Snow. Has anyone read Perfect Chemistry? If so, don’t you think she would be an amazing Brittany Ellis if they make a movie? Anyway, I’m not all that familiar on these series but I think it’s an interesting concept. Especially if you get to see her young on one show and being reckless while being a totally different person as a mature adult. Funny. Though, it may clash together and people may not like Lily anymore.

Ima watch it just because of Brittany Snow =) I absolutely ADORE her!
March 11th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
Making the Grade is this awful/hysterical movie made in the 80s at my school and the preppy 80s fashion is fabulous! i am excited for the spin-off.
March 11th, 2009 at 5:24 pm
How about no spinoff, period.
March 11th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
Brittany Snow? I’m in!
March 11th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
In my opinion, I think that Brittany Snow was a bad choice to play a younger Lily…I mean, I like BS, but I just don’t see her portraying a younger LVW. We’ll see though, I am a huge fan of GG so you know I will be catching the spin-off!!
March 11th, 2009 at 6:39 pm
I’m really interested because we don’t have to see it as a prequel if it was a whole entire new show I’d still be interested. What’s special about this show is that we have seen the character in the future but it doesn’t change anything to the actual show. Plus, if it’s written by the same people that write GG I’m in.
March 11th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
i dont watch gossip girl but i think i’ll watch this cause of brittany snow. i was so upset when they canceled american dreams
March 11th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
The look is very Fallon Carrington, so with that I’m fully on board (although I actually already was).
You do bring up a good point though about a prequel airing at the same time as the original. That’ll be tricky. But I think I trust the writers to make a really good attempt to pull it off. I think they need to really integrate current and prequel Lily storylines so that when watching one show, it’ll only make sense to also watch the other show. Not that GG should become all about Lily, but I think to really marry her storyline between the two series is how they’ll get us hooked on both. At least at the start that tactic might work. Long term, I’m not sure.
Hell, for the soundtrack alone I’ll watch this!
March 12th, 2009 at 5:55 am
It’s like Sweet Valley with all of the books being written at the same time. (.^_^) It should be fun to call the writers on continuity errors.
March 12th, 2009 at 10:07 am
I can’t wait to see the 80’s fashions and hopefully music! I loved the 80’s LOL I did!!! Still do! lol
March 12th, 2009 at 10:56 am
i guss ill give it a try??? i mean i love brit snow. but i dont love lily vand.
March 12th, 2009 at 11:29 am
I love GG, so I will def giv’er a chance to see what it is like. I think Lily’s life before could be a very interesting story line…but I don’t think it can trump GG
