Billy Crudup Discusses His Animated Penis
Dr. Manhattan shows off his blue balls in 'Watchmen'

Billy Crudup sat down for an interview with Parade.com to talk about his role as Dr. Manhattan in the new live-action movie adaptation of the wildly successful graphic novel Watchmen. Fans of the graphic novel know that Dr. Manhattan, a superhero made entirely of energy, feels no compulsion to wear any clothing whatsoever and, therefore, is completely nekkid in much of the graphic novel. As a result, Crudup‘s animated version of Dr. Manhattan will also appear in the nude in the movie which opens this Friday. Here is a preview screencap (censored of course) of Dr. Manhattan as he will appear in the new film:

After the jump, check out the NSFW uncensored full-frontal version of his photo along with an illustration from the original Watchmen graphic novel (for comparison) as well as portions from Crudup‘s interview with Parade.com

Billy Crudup has the biggest role in a very big movie. He’s the towering Dr. Manhattan in Watchmen, which has devoted fans counting down the days until its release. Playing the blue and often conflicted superhero in the adaptation of the popular graphic novel was a new challenge for Crudup, who more often than not has earned critical acclaim for his serious performances. And Crudup had to get used to letting a computer enhance his body, which left little to the imagination on the big screen.

Q: They say size doesn’t matter, but were you getting teased about how endowed you were?

A: Of course, but I’m not saying how much the computer helped. Actually, I didn’t fully expect the interest that Dr. Manhattan’s genitalia has received. But I understood his motivation for baring it all. Why would the guy with all this power really care about a uniform? He doesn’t need to obey society’s constraints because, if he wanted to, he could destroy society. So I think he kind of feels like, ‘You know what? I enjoy a good breeze on my private parts.’

Q: Not to get too personal, but were you unclothed on the set?

A: I am naked often, but was not naked that I recall during filming. I wore a pair of what were pretty elaborate pajamas and they were studded with about 1,200 blue LED’s so that Dr. Manhattan would glow blue. There were also motion capture electrodes on my body and I had over a hundred on my face. They all sent data into a computer that really created the Dr. Manhattan you see on the screen. My performance was basically just laying the groundwork for the CGI.

Q: Is that an acting challenge?

A: I guess I just took for granted that when you’re playing a character you have their coat, you have their watch, you have their glasses or whatever. And those are all things that are quite useful in helping your performance. When you take them away you have to pretty much rely on your imagination as your only real resource, and I realized mine had become a little rusty.

Q: Dr. Manhattan is a little conflicted about the dividing line between right and wrong, isn’t he?

A: I’ve thought that about almost all of the roles that I take. I always end up taking people that are morally ambiguous. Those are the characters that I find fascinating. I wish I had more of the hero gene, but I don’t think I’d be very good at playing one. When you’ve got Harrison Ford up there on the screen you go, ‘I’ll watch him run from anything.’ He’s compelling. But you wouldn’t want to watch me do that.

Q: You’ve always worked hard to protect you privacy off screen, which isn’t easy.

A: You can’t possibly understand the effort that goes into not doing things — from interviews to magazine covers. But it’s important to me not to give everything away. I put a lot of time and energy and thought behind what I do and the characters that I create, and I don’t want to do anything peripheral that is going to make an audience see me up there on the screen rather than who I’m playing.

Q: So being famous isn’t number one on your wish list?

A: Fame isn’t really what it’s about. Look, it’s a human quality for people to want to feed their egos by having other people worship them, by having their attention, by having people be attracted to them. I think it probably has something to do with immortality. So to deny that is sort of silly. However, I do feel like there are more important things than whether I’m going to be on the cover of another magazine or on ET.

You gotta love that such a down to Earth guy has no qualms about appearing totally nekkid in one of the most anticipated films of the year … animated or not, such a feat takes … well, balls. I’ve already purchased tickets for an IMAX showing of Watchmen at midnight Thursday and I can’t wait to finally see the film for myself. I’ve dug out my copy of Watchmen the graphic novel and hope to have it completely read by showtime. I ain’t gonna lie, I’m curious to see what animated p33n looks like on the big screen (and in IMAX, no less). It shant be long now. Are any of y’all also gonna be seeing Watchmen on Thursday night?

No Imax showing in my town, but I bought tickets for the first showing on Friday!

Dr. Manhattan is kind of a d-bag so I am glad they found a super d-bag to play him! This is the jerk that cheated on Mary Louise Parker when she was pregnant with his kid!

You’ll love the movie. Saw it last night at a special screening.

At least Billy Crudup was really in a CGI suit; does no-one remember Rebecca Romijn COMPLETELY naked, apart from body-paint and some sticker things? Weirdly enough, she also was blue.

No-one ever went on about what she didn’t wear in THREE X-Men movies. Why is male nudity SO MUCH WORSE than female? In the UK, we have topless women in daily newspapers but they wouldn’t dream of even a topless guy. Hypocrites much?

    • @Bridget — for me it’s not worse, it’s more newsworthy BECAUSE male nudity in film is so rare. i think it’s about time that men get as naked as women do in film. even this male nekkidness in Watchmen doesn’t go far enough because it is animated, many more women get really nekkid in film than do men … and it’s a shame.

I bought my midnight Thursday tickets today! I’m excited, I’ve been a fan of the graphic novel for years (tradition in my family…) and I’m excited to see the advances in the CGI work (naked or not) tho I wish Andy Serkis had gotten this much attention for his work with The Lord of the Rings. Yay!!

  6. kate says:

Going with a group of friends in Friday night, I can’t wait!!! One of my friends says she’s scared of seeing all the blue penis on a huge screen, but I’m sure she’ll barely notice it by the end.

  7. Bridget says:

It is a shame… dammit, I like a (real) naked guy in a movie! Sadly, male nudity is definately newsworthy… I guess it has to be until its so unnoticable we just don’t care. Happening any time soon?

  8. Holly says:

    well….I’ll be seeing that movie.

  9. Amy says:

Why does the Billy Crudup version appear to not have balls? LOL

  10. HeyI'mAmy says:

I agree Trent, it’s time to take a stand for more male nekkidness.

  11. Jade says:

I saw it in Imax last Friday at WonderCon.

That was a whole lotta giant blue peen.

But it was fantastic (not just the peen) and I can’t wait to see it again.

  12. razzle dazzle says:

Im sure its a good movie but honestly who wants to see that? Yuckers!!! Hahahahah the least they could do was put him in like a blue speedo! I want to see the movie very much but if thats going to be in there no thank you

  13. Tez says:

Men have been going topless/shirtless in movies ALOT longer than women have.Only in North America is a topless female considered taboo nudity in rl or in film/magazines.In Europe and most of the rest of the world, it’s almost just as common(and not taboo)to see topless women on the beaches and in mainstream media as it is to see topless men.

As for the commonlaity of genitalia of either sex in film(other than porn), neither sex has had their genitalia in mainstream media at all very much(sorry ladies, pubic hair IS NOT considered genitalia).

  14. Alisaj29 says:

Can you imagine that comeing at you in IMAX AND 3D? Yum

  15. Leslie says:

Hee! I can see his religion!

  16. AM says:

It’s a freakin’ cartoon p33n for g*dsake – what’s all the fuss? As for that comment about how “it’s time to take a stand for more male nekkidness” – sheesh, where have you been for the last few years? Male frontal nudity is all over Hollywood, independent film, Broadway, you name it. A-List actors drop trou with abandon these days. Try getting Julia Roberts to do that in a film Not gonna happen. The real B.S. is when people talk about how “brave” an actor is for whipping it out onscreen or onstage. Daniel Radcliff was hailed as a “serious actor” only because of “Equus”. Men have been brainwashed to think there has been some kind of double standard regarding female nudity in movies. That’s a load. T&A does not equal p33n. Let’s see some more acting “bravery” from some of our A-List actresses out there. And I agree, pubic hair just won’t cut it!

it could have been worse, it could have been circumcised.

    or circumsized AND erect! hahaha…
