Another Sarah Michelle Gellar Film Goes Straight To DVD

Do you see a pattern emerging?
March 6th, 2009

Alas … it appears that Sarah Michelle Gellar’s constant attempts to make it as a big name movie star continue to fall short of her intended goal. SMG’s new film Possession, which was to be released in theaters has been demoted to a straight-to-DVD release hitting stores on May 12:

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Sarah Michelle Gellar film ‘Possession’ to Blu-ray on May 12th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs have yet to be announced at this time, though you can expect the typical 1080p AVC and DTS-HD Master Audio treatment from the studio. Special features have also yet to be announced at this time, but we expect to hear more soon.

Sad. It’s such a shame that SMG decided to end Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s TV run because she wanted to make movies … and this is what’s become of her movie career. I don’t know why but she seems to keep making the same shitty horror film over and over over again. First there was The Grudge, then The Grudge 2, then The Return, then Possession … it’s like her movie career is stuck on repeat. Here’s hoping her other film scheduled for a theatrical release, Veronika Decides to Die, makes it to the big screen. You know … a bet a big screen adaptation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (well another one with 100% less Luke Perry) would deffo make it to theaters. I’m just sayin’.

This sucks. I’m such a big SMG fan, and I’d love to go to the movies and see her in something besides Scooby Doo! I am a fan of The Grudge movies, and I have Southland Tales (ugh…so not worth the 20 bucks I spent on it) and The Return (I was pleasantly surprised) and my all time favorite,Cruel Intentions. And they keep pushing back the date on this one. I thought the trailers for this one looked pretty good, and I’ve seen worse hit the theaters. I don’t get it.

    I still love you, Sarah!

  2. Krystal Says:

I love SMG & have seen & will see anything she’s in. She’ll make a comeback…you’ll see Trent. Don’t worry. She’s a very smart girl and everyone knows she can act. Its not like she has to “prove” herself to anyone. I wish she would make a badass chick flick or something. She’s awesome at kicking ass. TEAM SMG :)

  3. . Says:

I was a huge fan of SMG, but I haven’t seen her in anything good these days! It’s a shame that her career is continually fading away.

  4. Ickitt Says:

Meh. I liked Buffy but that was about it of hers.

    Can’t say I’m a fan.

  5. Ickitt Says:

meh. Never a fan. I liked Buffy but that was about it.

What wrong with the home pages btw?

  6. lambman Says:

    What the fug?????

why is that the poster? the movie isnt even a horror it is a thriller/love story

seriously why dont studios release her movies? The Grudge made well over 100 million, as did Scream and Scooby Doo…she has a devoted fanbase

She should stop taking leading roles in small movies and take supporting roles in big movies…something like a Judd Apatow movie or a big ensamble drama with lots of names

  7. Blah Girls! Says:

    Aw, sad, I love SMG!

  8. Ashley Says:

100% less Luke Perry? Have you gone mad? I’ll take me some Dylan McKay/Pike/Luke Perry any day.

  9. Chase Says:

This really isn’t her faullt; the studio has continually pushed this movie back for along time now. It was supposed to be released last year so it really isn’t her fault. The Grudge was good and way successful but she should have never signed on to do the second movie; horrible idea. She should stay on TV for a little while AND then make movies. She needs a better agent obviously.

  10. E Says:

Maybe she needs to stop playing stupid characters in stupid movies. I like SMG, but she picks some shitty movies.

  11. Sarah Says:

hell’s yeah she needs to do a big screen version of Buffy! i think right around now would be a good time since Sex and the City did so well, and all the Marvel movies… THEN, after that did well people will want to put her in GOOD movies. duh!

  12. lauren Says:

She probably does the same shitty movie because she can’t get anything else at this point! Sad but true.

  13. Traci Says:

I’m probably in the minority, but I really liked the Buffy movie, and couldn’t get into the show at all.

  14. Judabee Says:

Alright…Luke Perry is awesome. Don’t hate. Also, I’m all for a remake of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie. I don’t get it…why does SMG contiue to make horrible movies? She was awesome in Cruel Intentions. That is a fave of mine. I also really liked her in the earlier Buffy series before it got really strange…SMG, use your head and get into something good! Read tons of scripts and get second opinions! Please, girl, you owe it to yourself! Revamp the old you and rekindle the flame that’s been flickering and on the verge of burning out for a while.

  15. Cella Says:

I have always loved her and her hubby is pretty hot too!! She is very pretty.

  16. Joanne Says:

This is the life of an actor. Your hot, then your not – then hopefully your hot again … if you haven’t completely ruined your image by taking bad roles in bad films, in the meantime.

  17. Michelle Says:

I totally heart me some SMG… maybe someone should tell her to stop picking movies with cheesey horror plot lines… beacuse really the Grudge was bad enough, she should have learned from that one.

  18. cdog21 Says:

Before The Grudge SMG’s career was good both on TV and the couple of movies she did. After it’s just a done deal. I would love to see her do something good, but so far it ain’t happening.

  19. cdog21 Says:

Could the BTVS cast even be physically up to doing a Buffy movie, it’s been 10 years since the show actually came out. and except for Michelle everybody else is maturing in the wrong direction

  20. Hannah Says:

I’m a hardcore Buffy fan since the third episode of the first season. But after the series ended and I bought the seasons and watched them I realized something; Sarah is NOT that great of an actress. Alyson Hannigan is amazing, however. Sarah can’t hold something up on her own.

  21. Jill Says:

    The poster makes no sense!
I was really looking forward 2 this movie, I love Lee Pace.
But the poster doesn’t work, it has nothing 2 do w/ the movie 4rm what Ive seen 4rm the trailer. Selling the film as another Geller horror flick won’t work people

  22. egor Says:

at this point playboy is in her future if she wants to hit the snooze bare on her career.

  23. Lily Says:

After reading Lambman’s comment, I checked out the movie’s imdb write up. Go figure: it really is categorized as a thriller/romance, seeming to lean towards the latter. It doesn’t seem like it’s a horror movie at all.

My guess, especially coupled with the above poster, is that poor SMG was typecast as the Buffy character. I know a lot of us loved that show, but, it sucks for her since she can’t seem to get away from it. I know I’d be pretty bummed if I was stuck doing the same kind of work for the rest of my life.

  24. kait Says:

item 1) isn’t she supposed to be SMP now? 2) whoever said she should try to get some supporting roles is totally spot on. Deffo in a comedy or something. That would show that she has a little versatility! AND DON’T TELL ME SCOOBY DOO!!

  25. Michael Says:

Maybe the fact that she can’t act has something to do with it? No range at all. The only part she can play is SMG. And that Michael Jackson nose of hers doesn’t help either.

  26. Ashley Says:

Can’t act? Seriously? You’ve got to be kidding me. I’d advise you to go back and watch Season 5 of Buffy, especially the darker episodes in which her mother is sick and passes away. Sarah was awesome.

  27. JS Says:

The best film she ever did was Cruel Intentions, I don’t what the hell happened after that. That was a great performance, she stole the show!

  28. Mike Says:

ill always and forever be a fan, as im sure you will too trent. it is sad that shes not having as much success as she deserves. soon, i hope.

  29. e13 Says:

I don’t get why so many actors are ashamed of any “pop culture” work they’ve done. In your private life, or the independent circuit, you can practice your craft (writing, acting, directing, whatever) to your own personal fulfillment. You can make a crap load of money by whoring out yourself like Adam West, William Shatner, anyone who’s been in anything.

No, instead they need recognition from a fickle public. Here’s a tip, Sarah – HAVE FUN WITH BUFFY. Make that movie everyone wants to see, invest the money, and make a bunch of “serious” indie films so you feel better in the morning. Lord knows that’s what I’d do, but I’m an average actor at best.

  30. Kool Moe Joe Says:

She’s married to that untalented prick Freddie Prinze Jr., not being much of a talent herself, she has already failed.

  31. sarah Says:

have you ever seen “the air I breathe”? really great movie and she’s just as great in it too.

  32. Hannah Says:

Ashley, I’ve watched Season 5 numerous times, in the middle of it currently actually and no, she can not pull it off. It’s hollow.

  33. Charles Says:

I think that Sarah has gotten it into her head that she needs to do a lot of smaller “Indie” movies to prove her acting chops. Or maybe she was told this by her agent. Who knows? Anyway, I actually quite liked The Air I Breathe. Also, the Return was pretty good, in a lowkey kind of way. But The Grudge? And Scooby Doo? A paycheck, nothing more.

Regarding a Buffy movie, I think they all do it it. Make up does wonders for the age. Dawn would be grown up (MIchelle has become quite the hottie), Willow would be an earthy, mature witch, Xander would be all Nick Fury, and Buffy? Well she would be Slayer Prime and probably totally clueless to what the new, younger Slayers would be saying. But damn what a movie it would be….

  34. Hannah Says:

I agree the movie would be amazing. I would hope they wouldn’t put Kennedy in it as well. I can. Not. Stand. Her.

  35. rupertgiles Says:

wonder if spike would be in it hes like 50 now.

  36. Ally Says:

Wow that really sucks. I like SMG, but LOVE Lee Pace. And goodness knows he’ll be needing paychecks.

  37. Raz Says:

SMG is a very good actress that just needs better roles. Don’t forget, she also won a Daytime Emmy. And as for her “Michael jackson nose” as someone else posted, I think it’s cute. It would be great to see her in Playboy but I don’t think there is any chance of that.

  38. Brooke Says:

Whatever. SMG cannot act to save her life and she isn’t exactly a face that would launch a thousand ships either. The only thing she’s really good at is playing a bitch (probably because it’s so close to home). I wouldn’t have cared to see this movie had it hit theatres anyway. Buffy was good but that was because she had a great supporting cast to lean on. All by her lonesome, Sarah is a terrible, terrible overactor.
