Chris Weitz, director of the upcoming movie The Twilight Saga: New Moon, was spied having a power lunch with a few new castmembers from this new film. Alex Meraz, Bronson Pelletier, Tyson Houseman and Taylor Lautner (who we already know will reprise his role as Jacob Black) joined Weitz for a bite to eat in Vancouver, Canada (where the film is currently in production) yesterday afternoon. It is being reported that the new castmembers, the ones who are playing Native American parts, are actually Native American themselves. Here are a few pics from yesterday’s summit … be warned, the following report may contain spoilers for those of you who have yet to read the book:
Summit Entertainment has brought on a cast of American Indian actors to star in the werewolf and vampire-themed “New Moon,” the sequel to “Twilight”. The studio has hired Chaske Spencer, Bronson Pelletier, Alex Meraz, Kiowa Gordon and Tyson Houseman to form the ensemble Wolf Pack, who in Stephenie Meyer’s novel take the side of the humans in their fight against the evil breed of vampires. All five will make their big-screen debuts in the film. Taylor Lautner previously had been cast as Jacob Black, also a member of the Wolf Pack. Summit noted that all of the actors are of American Indian descent, with Sioux, Purepecha and Hualapai among the tribes represented. Meyer made the announcement on her Web site after weeks of rumors that director Chris Weitz was close to casting members of the Wolf Pack.
I understand that it was very important for the studio to hire Native American actors for these roles, which I think is a very smart move. Not only does hiring Native American actors give new opportunities to actors that may not get much work already but it will also give the film a level of authenticity. I’m pretty sure we won’t be seeing any of these young gents in any wolf costuming … that is, until the movie comes out in November … but it’s nice to see that they look like a handsome bunch. Do these guys look like the Quileute characters you envisioned from the book?

@ Steph and Tami: He is cast as Quil. The have not cast a Seth or Leah for New Moon (I don’t know if they will). The other two in these pics are Embry (blue hat) and Jared.

This is SO so much better than the casting for Avatar – did you hear Jackson Rathbone saying all he has to do to play asian is get a tan and shave his sideburns? It’s really offensive. There’s more news about all their shenanigans with Avatar at racebending.com. All this Twilight news is a serious relief compared to that horror show.
Just did a quick google search for on-set pictures of TL. The awful widows peak is gone! Think they’re going to use his natural hair for the post hair cut scenes?

That being said, the guy in the blue hat is hottttttttttt. Quil’s my fave, but if he’s playing Embry I might switch to Embry fan club.

@ Ashley….yeah I know. I’m on the fence about this overall casting job….they did well by getting Native American actors, but seemed to have forgot all the hype about almost recasting Taylor if he wasn’t big enough….I’m hoping they’re having group workout sessions. Being Native American myself, that was the major draw for me to these books, that and the wolves, so I’m so excited they chose NA actors and actresses. It would’ve been insulting had they done otherwise. I would’ve been extremely ticked off had they chosen otherwise. I’m still wishing they had done a better job of casting Jacob from the beginning but…he was cast for Twilight so I’m glad they stuck with him. I will be eager/anxious to see the new trailer. I hope they do a good job with it. And everyone is right, the pack is supposed to be massive so…I’m glad they chose NA actors but yeah, I am curious to see the finished project. Jacob is funny and sexy dangerous…TL is too cutesy still. BTW where is Leah? I never hear about Leah in this movie, only Emily.
btw to Ashley I think the guy in the blue hat is playing Paul in the movie…but I may be wrong.
It really doesn’t matter who he’s playing as long as he keeps looking like that. :D

Wow they are certainly a lot hotter than I imagined they would be! Hello! I will say that they look a lot better than the two guys who were in Twilight looking ridiculously high in the La Push scene!
@Blair…So true! I love how Taylor is wearing a peacoat! I like him, but I do think he is trying to hard.
Taylor seems to be getting cuter and cuter everyday. But he is trying a bit too hard to seem grown up. Whatever happened to the cool-as teenage boy clothes? I miss them. Now guys are starting to wear skinny jeans and v-neck shirts. It’s just not right!
