Ugh, I’ll still go see, but only at the matinee price, and I reserve the right to walk out at the denouement…

I’ve read Watchmen many times, and each time I get a little something more from it. Honestly, I don’t believe you can just read it once and be done with it. It is a very haunting story that isn’t an action story, but a very layered discussion of some often uncomfortable issues.

Unfortunately, any movie based on this book has to dumb down some of the very precise nuances that come out in Moore’s writing. I admire Snyder as a director, and I’m sure that this will be an entertaining movie, but I don’t think it’s realistic to assume it will do a story so intricate justice on the big screen.

You should definitely read it Trent, but read it more than once!!

All that talk of violence and sex leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Watchmen, the book at least, does have nudity, violence and even sex, but it doesn’t stylise or glorify them. They’re treated either matter-of-factly or respectfully. Again I have to reiterate this isn’t a Frank Miller comic, the adult content isn’t there so that hot-blooded males can shout AWESOME, COOL and BADASS, it is there because it is a serious comic that deals with adult themes.

It’s especially nauseating when all they can say when asked to describe Watchmen are hyperbolic adjectives like “AWESOME”, “COOL” and “BADASS”. This ain’t a Frank Miller comic, people!
