‘Watchmen’ Do ‘Entertainment Weekly’

Superhero Hype!
February 20th, 2009

Characters from the upcoming big screen adaptation of the critically-acclaimed graphic novel Watchmen are featured on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine. In fact, this week’s issue of the mag will have 6 different collectible covers, one for each of the 6 main Watchmen superheros — Rorschach, Silk Spectre, Nite Owl, Dr. Manhattan, The Comedian and Ozymandias:

They have come to glimpse the miracle. They have come to witness the revolution. They have come for Watchmen — the allegedly unfilmable superhero movie, the long-awaited adaptation of the comic book that changed the face of comic books forever. On this warm July morning, over 5,000 fans attending the annual geek pop summit known as Comic-Con have assembled inside the San Diego Convention Center for a first look. Many spent the night on the sidewalk. Some have come in costumes — most modeled after Rorschach, a vigilante with an inkblot mask and a pitiless brand of justice that makes Batman look like Bambi. Behind the stage, indie-movie icon Kevin Smith, a.k.a. the Most Famous Fanboy in the World, parks himself in front of a closed-circuit TV, a happy grin on his bearded mug. ”You have to understand, I’ve been waiting for this moment for years,” says Smith. ”This is it, man. This is the pinnacle. You have no idea how f—ing pumped I am.”

Yes, yes … comic book fans the WORLD OVER have been waiting and praying for this movie to be made and, at long last, the time is nearly nigh. The EW coverstory can be read in full HERE and goes on to essentially hype the film to grandiose proportions … which I feel is kinda risky considering that A.) rabid fans of the comic book are notoriously the hardest people to please and B.) something hyped so much is bound to incur the wrath of haters who are licking their lips at the chance to tear it down. For me, Watchmen is a pop culture phenomenon and is absolutely worth talking about … in human terms, not necessarily godlike or divine platitudes. After the jump, check out a few really nice black and white portraits of some of the Watchmen superheros that will be featured in the new issue of EW magazine …

Say hello to Nite Owl II, Sally Jupiter, Hooded Justice, Mothman, Nite Owl I and Billy Crudup/Dr. Manhattan (complete with CG markers):

If you can believe it, I still have not read the Watchmen graphic novel in its entirety. I’ve had the book for years but, for various reasons, have never been able to finish the book. I absolutely plan on finishing the book before the movie hits theaters … after all, I have to know if all the book’s hype is justified. I am fascinated by the devotion that so many comic book fans have for this particular graphic novel. I am very interested and curious to see this film … are you?

I am so excited!!! It’s one of my favorite books, and from what I’ve seen/heard about the movie it may do it some justice.

  4. Kendra Says:

I know nothing about this book, but the previews for this movie make me so giddy..It looks insane! Can’t wait!

  5. Blah girls! Says:

JDM, I will see this for you.

  6. Ally Says:

I cannot wait to see this movie. I’ll be very sad if it doesn’t live up to my expectations.

  7. shags Says:

Read it! Although, I would be interested to hear someone’s thoughts on seeing the movie and *then* reading the book, instead of the other way around.

  8. Hafiz Says:

I’m a huge admirer of the graphic novel, and I have to say that I’m embarrassed that it has to be associated with that particular brand of people, fanboys (Kevin Smith and Zack Snyder himself included) and nerds who like to play dress-up.

It’s especially nauseating when all they can say when asked to describe Watchmen are hyperbolic adjectives like “AWESOME”, “COOL” and “BADASS”. This ain’t a Frank Miller comic, people!

  9. Hafiz Says:

Having read that EW article, colour me worried.

All that talk of violence and sex leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Watchmen, the book at least, does have nudity, violence and even sex, but it doesn’t stylise or glorify them. They’re treated either matter-of-factly or respectfully. Again I have to reiterate this isn’t a Frank Miller comic, the adult content isn’t there so that hot-blooded males can shout AWESOME, COOL and BADASS, it is there because it is a serious comic that deals with adult themes.

  10. Chase Says:

I’m a little young to even know about the graphic novel and what not since I’ve never read it or heard about it until the release of this film became known with the trailers and what not. It seems… a little odd. Not sure. I guess it’s popular but part of me thinks it’s going to be a huge blockbuster and part of me feels a bit of a flop. I’m just happy that Malin Akerman got a lead role! She doesn’t strike me as the superhero type but I’ll be interested!

  11. Cassie Says:

    @Hafiz – I agree with your point.

I’ve read Watchmen many times, and each time I get a little something more from it. Honestly, I don’t believe you can just read it once and be done with it. It is a very haunting story that isn’t an action story, but a very layered discussion of some often uncomfortable issues.

Unfortunately, any movie based on this book has to dumb down some of the very precise nuances that come out in Moore’s writing. I admire Snyder as a director, and I’m sure that this will be an entertaining movie, but I don’t think it’s realistic to assume it will do a story so intricate justice on the big screen.

You should definitely read it Trent, but read it more than once!!

  12. warmsun Says:

Look, I can live with them leaving stuff out. Fine. No prob – but when you change something as essential as the ENTIRE END OF THE STORY, I (and all those rabid fans out there) are going to understandibly get a “little” upset.

Ugh, I’ll still go see, but only at the matinee price, and I reserve the right to walk out at the denouement…

  13. Traci Says:

I started writing this at like 3:30, and then had to leave (to see Coraline in 3D, oddly enough) before hitting enter. Anyway…
I haven’t finished reading it either, I got halfway through pretty quickly over the summer, but haven’t had a chance to read anything in months. I am looking forward to it though, from what I’ve read of the book, and seen in the previews, it looks pretty true to the original source.
Besides, even if it sucks, I get my tickets half price through the company I work for. ;)

  14. Anna Says:

awesome!! i am so getting the matthew goode cover. i love that man :)
