‘The Twilight Saga’s Eclipse’ Gets A Release Date
They really plan to churn 'em out!

Even tho the Twilight sequel New Moon, or The Twilight Saga‘s New Moon as it has been renamed, has yet to begin filming it has been announced that Summit Entertainment has already set a release date for the third installment of the Twilight Saga, Eclipse, to be released in movie theaters. Because The Twilight Saga‘s Eclipse has been scheduled for release a mere 7 months after the second installment hits theaters, a new director will have to be selected for that film. OY! So much movement on a film that is scheduled to get made after the next film which has yet to be made is made. Confused? Yeah, me too. BE WARNED … the following information about the Eclipse movie contains SPOILERS that should be avoided if you haven’t read the books … read on with caution:

A third film in “The Twilight Saga” is now set, reports Deadline Hollywood Daily. Summit Entertainment, the studio behind the series based on Stephenie Meyer’s teen vampire books, has apparently decided to release Eclipse on June 30, 2010. That’s little more than half a year after the series’ second movie, New Moon, is due to come out, on Nov. 20, 2009. No director for the third film is confirmed yet, and New Moon and Eclipse aren’t set to be filmed back-to-back. Deadline Hollywood Daily also quotes this Eclipse plot summary from Summit: “As Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob — knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella has one more decision to make: life or death” … Chris Weitz will not direct the third film in the Twilight series, Eclipse, a source close to the production tells EW.com exclusively. Because New Moon, which Weitz is helming, and Eclipse are due to be released so close together (on Nov. 20, 2009, and June 30, 2010, respectively), Weitz will be in post-production on New Moon at the same time that Eclipse will be shooting. That said, the source confirms a report that the movies will not be shot simultaneously or back-to-back; there will be a brief gap between the production of both films.

Clearly, the movie studio does not want to lose any momentum by spacing the films too far apart from one another. A Twilight film in the Fall followed by another the next Summer is sure to keep the rabid Twilighters hungry for more very happy … and loyal. I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear sometime soon that the fourth installment, The Twilight Saga‘s Breaking Dawn, will get a release date in early 2011. It would appear that Summit Entertainment is really planning to keep the Twilight movies coming at close intervals. Personally, I’d prefer that they take time and care to put out the best movies possible … but in showbiz, sometimes quantity is substituted for quality. Are any of y’all Twilighters worried or excited by this news?

Did you read breaking dawn??! That should be an interesting movie….

  2. Slartibartfazt says:

LOL. Yes… that will make an interesting movie… i wish Catherine Hardwicke would do eclipse… she made a good version of the story..

  3. brooke says:

As a fan of all the Twilight books, I am all for the movies being released one after the other as quickly as possible. If the movies turn out to be unsubstantial, it won’t matter, since the books themselves were the same. But I love them anyway!!!!

  4. Ria says:

    This is ridiculous.

  5. Heather B says:

Eh, what the hell? Pump them out asap. It’s not like I’ve been going to see the movie over and over again because of the intelligent conversations I can have afterward. I want to see pretty vampires! However, can we please get a complete rewrite for the Breaking Dawn movie?

  6. ash says:

As much as I love the twilight saga and want em quick, I also want them to be good. I really hope they are

  7. Ashley H says:

I’m worried! I mean if they were going to do it right (a la lord of the rings, film them all then release) then ok, but it all feels rushed. I don’t want it to turn out like Eragon. Those are great books but the movie was such crap!

  8. Molly says:

I am a big fan of the story being told in both the books and the movie, but I wish the production of all aspects of the Twilight series would have just slowed down a little bit. Imagine how much better those books could have been if someone had taken the time to edit them like they should have been edited. Which doesn’t mean that I haven’t read all 2500 pages or however many it actually is for the four books more than once. The books could have been shorter, and I’d be willing to be patient to get the best movies possible. The story is enough to carry them, but this fastest possible production time is making me anxious in a bad way.

i want the movies to come out fast but i don’t want them to be rushed and not do a good job

  10. Mandy says:

Doesn’t matter, because the books are better than the films anyway – learned that when I walked out of the theater after Twilight.
I was hoping that the films would bring more to the books. I’ll still see them because it’s interesting to catch the books on screen, but I don’t think they’ll ever be “good”.

  11. Kat says:

WORRIED. WORRIED WORRIED WORRIED!!! They’re crapping these movies out like babies. How in the world are they going to do a good job on these movies? Why are they so anxious about putting them out so fast. I seriously doubt people are going to lose interest if they have to wait a year between each movie. It’s called ANTICIPATION!!!!

  12. Emili says:

This is terrible – I for one love the books and would like the movie to be a great reflection of them. I wouldn’t care if each movie was 3 hours long complete with intermission as long as they took the time to tell the right story. Not to mention if they keep switching up directors there is no way to have a cohesive thought throughout the movies. Each director is totally different in their way of thinking. Maybe they should just have Stephanie Meyer direct, then someone would really care about the end result.

  13. Roxster says:

I have to agree with pretty much everyone else…this is a bad idea. For starters, its too fast for them to be doing a quality job with it. And I love the series but I have no problem admitting they aren’t substantial books or amazing writing, so I feel like the rushed release dates are Summit’s acknowledgement that they need to build and capitalize momentum for this to work otherwise it’ll be harder to pull people in. But 7 months? Thats just stupid. The cast will hardly be done promoting new moon (especially since it prob wont even have released everywhere worlwide until january, just like twilight did) and they’ll have to strt doing press for eclipse. They’re going to be so sick of it, and prob pissed they cant do any other work. Not to mention people are going to get sick of it showing up on ever magazine cover and whatnot non stop for the better part of a year. Half of the marketing for film franchises like these (think HP and LOTR) comes from
the buzz and rabid hoopla that happens when fans go nuts with anticipation for the next in the series. That won’t be the same either. Overall, I feel like Summit thinks this is a smart move from a business/marketing perspective, but in reality I think its shooting them in the foot.

  14. Heather_Lea says:

    @Emili– I completely agree. 100%.

@Kerstin– I know right? It’s going to be interesting to see how Breaking Dawn plays out.

My opinion on the realease dates is that they don’t want their actors to age. (Well, with the exception of Taylor Lautner. ;] )
In the books, the vampires do not age. And so, god forbid if Peter Facinelli or Elizabeth Reaser get a wrinkle. Haha.
Anyways, this is what I assume is the cause of the quickened pace of production.

  15. Kit says:

I really wish they had just combined ‘New Moon’ and ‘Eclipse’ into one movie. Because if they do follow New Moon, some what. Then the movie will be really depressing and just bleh. Also, I’m pretty sure after Edward left in New Moon, A lot of people skimmed through the rest of the story until he reappeared. So, unless they are equal Edward and Jacob fans, the fans who see this movie might be bored until Edward returns or they hear Edward’s Voice XD

With that said, I think they may be rushing it a tad with the movies. Because I mean, the books didn’t come out back to back. Yet, a lot of people still were interested in them no matter the waiting period.

  16. crystal says:

um slow the f down summit! Greedy punks.

  17. aimie says:

i’d be more worried if they expected weitz to film and edit at the same time. nothing like blurring the lines in the mood of two very different books. i have always felt that new moon wouldn’t stand on it’s own in a movie unless it is infused with more edward (there wasn’t enought edward in the book and made it drag for me) so i think the studio may wanna push for an earlier release for eclipse to remedy what may be a not so money making sequel. just my though. new moon was my least favorite of all the books. eclipse my fave… so i am pleased as punch!

  18. Jessica says:

They should take more time on them, since there are so many details to be covered. Especially with a Vampire “war” in Eclipse. They just need to spend more time on them

  19. gigi says:

if they took more time, then the actors and actresses would age…that’s the main problem. there was an article out awhile ago concerning it.

  20. xoxo_CB says:

While I think that they should take more time on them, they also have to consider that vampires aren’t supposed to age. Even RPattz has stated that they should realy hurry in the making of all the films because he won’t be able to pull off looking 17 for that much longer. Either way… I’m excited!!!!!!!!!
