The 2009 Brit Awards Are Handed Out
Duffy & Kings of Leon clean up; Coldplay shut out

Duffy and Kings of Leon were the big winners at the 2009 Brit Awards which were held at Earls Court in London, England last night bringing home a total of five awards between them. Coldplay, who were nominated for 4 awards, were the Brangelina of the awards show as they went home empty-handed. Sad. In happy news, Kylie Minogue played host to the Brits last night and, I understand, managed to do a pretty nice job … and also managed to show off 6 different outfits thruout the night … as should be expected from any respectable fashionista. Here are a few pics of some of the Brit award winners last night and some info on what went down last night:

Soul singer Duffy and US rockers King of Leon have triumphed at the Brit awards in London, taking five prizes between them in the biggest night of the year for British music. Elbow were named best British group, beating Coldplay whom they will support during a North American tour this year, while former The Jam front man Paul Weller was crowned best male solo artist. Rapper Kanye West was named best international male solo artist, Katy Perry won best international female solo artist and Iron Maiden — currently on a world tour — were crowned best British live act. Welsh singer-songwriter Duffy was close to tears as she accepted the award for best British album for “Rockferry”, the biggest selling debut album in the world last year and the winner of a Grammy earlier this month. “I can’t tell you what this means after five years, thank you so much,” the 24-year-old said. She was also named best British female solo artist and British breakthrough act, while Bernard Butler won the award for best British producer of the year for his work on “Rockferry”. Kings of Lean frontman Caleb Followill paid tribute to his British following as he received gongs for best international album for “Only by the Night” and best international group. The singer, whose band has enjoyed much greater success in Europe and Australia than in their native United States, said: “If it were not for England, Kings of Leon would not be a band… You created Kings of Leon, so good luck getting rid of us” … Pop group Girls Aloud won the award for best British single for “The Promise”, which was chosen by a live public vote on the night, prompting delighted bandmember Sarah Harding to exclaim: “It’s about time!” Girls Aloud, Duffy, Kings of Leon and boy band Take That all performed live, with Take That descending on the stage in a cloud of smoke and green lights to screams from adoring fans in the audience. Also on stage were the Pet Shop Boys, who won the Brit for outstanding contribution to music. Joined by Lady GaGa and Brandon Flowers from the Killers, they performed a medley of their best-known hits from “West End Girls” to “Always on My Mind”. Coldplay left empty-handed despite being nominated for four awards, apparently cold-shouldered by their home fans despite winning three Grammys this year.

HMMM … a shut-out for Coldplay. Could this be the beginning of the end for them? I am glad to hear that Duffy won so many awards. She is such a talent, I’m really pleased to know that real musicianship still matters at these award shows. I have yet to jump on the Kings of Leon bandwagon but I understand they are very popular with the kids these days. I might have to get their album to see what all the hubbub is about. While I wasn’t able to watch the Brit Awards myself, I did manage to watch a few of the live performances online. The Pet Shop Boys/Lady Gaga/Killers collabo was really very fun. After the jump, check out the mash-up performance of all of their biggest hits …

So cool. That was a pretty fun performance. Getting back to Kylie Minogue for a second, here is a quick look at all 6 of her outfits from last night:

And here is a clip from the opening of the awards show last night … Kylie and some friends performed a short, cheeky version of her megahit Can’t Get You Out Of My Head:

I just love her. Congrats goes out to all the Brit Award winners last night.

  2. Traci says:

Love KoL. It took me awhile to get into them too, but I was in the UK when their new album came out, and it reminds me of hanging out in pubs and talking about Iron Man with British boys with Sex on Fire blaring in the background. Good times.

  3. Chella says:

I love the last 2 dress she looks great in all of them tho!

  4. Rach says:

Coldplay were truly robbed! Viva La Vida…is an amazing album, I was never much of a fan before I heard this album. And the song VLV was one of the best of 2008, The Promise mediocre pop, at best. Ugghh, the Brits are pretty rubbish really.

  5. Alex says:

Kings of Leon are awesome, truly. But I think Coldplay shoulda come away with something, they’re album was amazing…their style is just incredible. I personally can’t stand Duffy’s songs. She was the opening act at Coldplays concert and I could barely stand to listen to all of the songs that sounded EXACTLY the same. Not trying to be mean, but don’t see how she won an award and Coldplay didn’t

  6. Blair says:

I love that medley PSB did! Brandon Flowers looked awesome…as always…could’ve done without Lady Gaga…she is a hot mess…

  7. tatiana says:

Im JUST jumping on the Kings of Leon bandwagon, and let me tell you, its been a pleasant ride so far. They ‘re pretty damn good.

  8. Cera says:

Trent, you HAVE to jump on the Kings of Leon bandwagon. They are seriously incredible, and deserve every single award they win and then some. Caleb has the sexiest voice ever. It definitely didn’t take much for me to become a huge fan. BTW, did they perform at the Brit Awards? If so, where can I see their performance?

  9. Traci says:

    Caleb IS pretty hot.

  10. Traci says:

Also, I really dislike Gavin and Stacy, and the two guys from that show that cohosted with Kylie really seem like they’re trying to copy the career path of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

Here is the KOL performance from last night, the kicked major butt!

Hey Trent, it’s not just the young kids that are crazy for this band, I’m 46 and this is one of the best albums I’ve heard in ages.

  12. Avi says:

Please tell me before i watch that Lady BARFBARF did not perform with MY Neil and Chris??Oh I can’t watch this…it’s one thing for Bradon Flowers, but not her. She’s bloody awful, that slag!

  13. Avi says:

Wow, Chris has really aged terribly. Neil’s voice is not up to par here.

  14. Katie says:

Girls Aloud finally won a Brit Award!!! I love them. I really wish they’d try and crack America.

  15. mimi says:

meh, kings of leon are now MASSIVELY OVERPLAYED and have become too mainstream for my liking. they used to be great before they were everywhere! if i have to hear ‘sex on fire’ on the radio one more time, i will pull my hair out!!

  16. Samantha says:

Trent, definately jump on the kings of leon bandwagon… you shant be disappointed!

  17. Lana says:

Coldplay is so overrated. They are an amazing band and I love their music but that doesn’t make me blind from seeing that they are extremely overrated, especially with this album! Their last album was a lot better IMO.

As for Leona, I am not surprised she did not win. She has a great voice, but the person who is in charge of her career is dumb. She should have had poppier songs and I think she would have done better. People don’t love to hear a billion ballads, it gets repetitive.

  18. Sarah says:

While the new Coldplay album is pretty awesome, this is Kings of Leon’s year, man, and Only by the Night is faaaantastic. Definitely get on it if you haven’t yet. The PSB/Bflo/Lady Gaga collabo was pretty epic. I think it was the only time in his career that Brandon Flowers was out diva’d.

  19. Katie says:

@ Lana…I totally agree with you on Leona Lewis. She does need more pop friendly songs. I want to beat my radio every time she comes on now.

  20. DJ says:

LOVE Kings of Leon. Caleb Followill’s voice is incredibly sexy. The way he looks into the camera during the Sex on Fire video melts me.
