Over the weekend, personal photos of 16-year old Miley Cyrus and her 20-year old manfriend Justin Gaston made their way to the Internets that showed the couple paling around with some friends of theirs. Honestly, none of the photos were very interesting to me … except for one in particular. In some of the photos, a Asian male friend is seen mugging for the camera with Miley and Justin — which is fine. But this photo of Jiley, friends and this compliant male friend appears to show all of the Caucasian kids (and Justin, who is a full grown man) pulling back their eyelids apparently trying to mimic Asian eye features:
I suppose it could be said that these kids (and man) are “just having fun” and prolly don’t intend harm … which may be true BUT, I personally do not think that behavior like this is harmless at all. If children see this sort of thing, particularly from Miley Cyrus who they may look up to, and believe that it is “OK” and “funny” to mock people in this way I really feel they are getting the wrong message. I don’t imagine it’s very fun for Asian children (or adults, for that matter) to be mocked by others who think it’s funny to mimic their eye features. I’m sorry, I personally think it’s bad form. While not surprising (at all) it is very disappointing. I, for one, do not see the humor in a photo like this.

I love Miley and I think that this was just an inside joke between her and her friends. she must know that asians like myself love her music and look up to her as a positive role model.

Try the ENTIRE spanish national basketball team last year doing it while they were in CHINA for the OLYMPICS… This is the kind of thing I hate. She’s 16 years old, and she’s acting like a 16 year old. Celebrity status doesn’t change the fact that she’s still a young girl who does young girl things with her young friends. Just because your Asian friend does not call you out for mocking his/her accent or looks does NOT mean they don’t feel offended. I have Asian friends who will try to pass it off but will feel like the “offender” should have more sense.
