Wow. I am disappointed that she has been forced to make an apology for something that did not require one.

i don’t know why i feel so compelled to comment when 60-something others have done so already, but here i am giving my two cents. i hate it when anyone, famous or not, perpetuates racial stereotypes (or any stereotype for that matter). i think this sort of behavior has been mistaken as acceptable behavior because these things happen all the time and nothing is ever said. kids don’t realize that these sorts of actions (the “slanting” of the eyes, for example) have loaded meanings. though it appears miley was not being intentionally racist (just ignorant), her actions still perpetuated racist ideas. stereotypes like these DO have a history of being used to discriminate against asians in the united states (take a look at any world war two “how to spot a jap” propaganda poster). while miley is getting a lot more heat for this than any other teenager would, it is absolutely necessary to point out that this behavior is not acceptable.

I hate how people drop the “G” bomb and expect everyone to say “oh it’s ok she’s Christian, she didn’t mean to be an asshole”. BOOO. Lead by example, not by trying to clean up your mess with the “G” bomb.

I care about what Miley does because alot of my younger family members look up to her and I don’t want them learning that it’s okay to mock their asian friends for looking different.. or anybody else for that matter. Nobody was attacking her unfairly, she offended and upset alot of people and since, like I said before, she is signed with Disney .. she should know that everything she does is going to be studied by millions of little kids who want to be just like her. Because she is in that position I think it’s fine for people to point out that when she does something that may have been harmless but comes off as incredibly offensive, she should apologise so that her fans know that behaving that way in general is not ok.
If you don’t feel the same way fine. You said she didn’t ask to be a rolemodel and doesn’t deserve to be treated this way. She DID ask to be a rolemodel and she does have a very powerful influence so she should be made aware of the effect her actions have on others.
You say you have better things to do but you still go and defend her anyway? Where are your better things to do when you’re saying it’s ok for a famous popstar to teach kids how to mock people of other races?

@Lana – The people who acted like it wasn’t a mistake were the ones that bothered me. It’s okay to make a mistake and I don’t really take her actions that seriously but she (and everyone else) needs to admit that it was a mistake. I take everyone’s nonchalant response to it seriously though. It’s the apathy that bothers me and it’s apathy that allows offensive behaviour like this to happen; because people think it’s “too small” to deal with. Even if it offends one person in the entire world, it deserves an apology.

I don’t think Miley’s racist, and I don’t think she’s evil. Like I said, I’m glad she’s apologized.

I just don’t know about that Miley Cyrus. Why doesn’t she understand anything? She’s worse at being in the public eye than ANYONE! It should just be common sense what you shouldn’t do on camera when you’re a 16-yo celeb. At least she makes a pretty cute Asian girl.

Wow. I can’t believe people have brought up the Asian American guy in the photo. It is by far the most ignorant, ridiculous “excuse” for why this picture is “Not a big deal” I have ever heard. If the photo isn’t a big deal to you, than you don’t need to defend it. I have a friend named Seung and his eyes looked like that kid’s and he doesn’t spend his time making faces.

I am astounded by most of the comments made since this story came out. The people who are not offended are trying so hard to convince others not to be offended using the lame excuse above or Miley’s age. She’s 16, but what on earth is your excuse?

What I don’t think people understand is this isn’t about bashing Miley. The girl is barely even on my radar to begin with and as I don’t have a 12 year old daughter I don’t ever have to suffer her music or show. Separate the person from the action and the action alone is offensive IF you understand or want to understand the world from someone else’s view.

Asian Americans in this country have suffered racism. White people have not. The feelings of a offense that a minority group(black, latino, native American) may have when faced with a racist stereotype are not simply about looking for something to be offended about or being too PC, but rest in their own history in this country.

White people do not have that type of history here.

But no one wants to understand why some people might be offended. No one wants to hear it.

I’m glad Miley apologized, no matter how late or lame the apology was. If you step on someone’s foot by accident you don’t make excuses. You say sorry. Hopefully Miley will try to learn from this experience.

It’s the response to it all that really bums me out.

I see this as a pretty simple situation. If you agree to be a star, get the millions, you have to know your in the spotlight.

What she did wasn’t the same as a hate crime, or being openly racist, its racial profiling. It may not be stab-you-in-the-gut offensive, but it was still rude. Imagine if she came out doing Blackface.

And hey, if the Asian kid really is “making his eyes wide like white people”, then he’s doing it to! Two wrongs don’t make it right

How can people hate someone they don’t know? What the hell has this kid done to anyone here personally? I don’t understand it. I’m not a Miley fan by any stretch, but my 9yo daughter idolises her…I “hear” the show everyday (but don’t watch it) and hear her CD’s constantly. Because I’m not a fan should I rubbish her to my daughter?
Seriously, all this hate is as ignorant as the racism you claim to abhor. Miley did the wrong thing and has been blasted for it. She’s apologised. Whether it’s heartfelt or not is beside the point…she said she was sorry and has learned a lesson, so isn’t forgiveness in order? Be grown ups and leave the kid alone now.
Also @ niechse, some of us don’t agree. Get a brain and have some forethought. Knocking religion isn’t very smart.

i’m really disgusted by her attitude towards this issue. her apology sounds so fake and reluctant. its like getting a four year old to say sorry when they truly aren’t.
i don’t get it with people taking this ‘its not a big deal, she’s only sixteen’ attitude. in asia, if you do something offensive, it will come right back and sock you in the face. maybe its okay in america to go around calling dark-skin people black or to make fun of Chinese/Korean/Japanese having small eyes but in Asia, people respect each other. if they did offend someone, it is a heartfelt, sincere apology.

@Truepenny- it’s not so much that I am turning a blind eye, it is that I have better things to do then concern myself with what Miley Cyrus is doing with her life and I find it amazing that so many people feel the need to make a comment about what is wrong and right about what Miley does in her life. She did not ask to be a role model and I think it is unfair that she is attacked because she is a celebrity.
