Miley Cyrus Addresses That Controversial Photo
Miley Cyrus has finally spoken up about that controversial photo that shows her and her friends (20-year old manfriend Justin Gaston, included) seemingly mocking Asian eye features and offers her perspective on the entire matter. In a message sent to a Miley Cyrus fansite, Miley tries to explain away the photo by claiming that she was merely making “goofy faces” and that the intent of the photo has been “taken out of context” by the people offended by it. Nowhere in her message to fans (which also addresses those paparazzi photos that featured her wardrobe malfunction) does she offer an apology for the photo, she is just “sorry” that people have taken it out of context and she mentions that she has apologized in the past when she has made mistakes … implying that she did nothing wrong in this instance. Here is the full text of Miley’s message to fans (all spelling and grammatical errors are her own) along with TWO offending photos (apparently taken on the same night) of Miley “goofing around” with her friends:

Hey guys! Just wanted to give you a quick update on whats going on in my life! Im still in Nashville, but Im heading back to LA tomorrow! Taylor and I rehearse together tomorrow in Nashville before the Grammys on Sunday! That is going to be so much fun! Ive had such a good time being home hanging out with my friend Lesley and just chillin’ out!
Its good to get away from it ALL every now and then! I couldnt of planned a better week to come back to Nashville! I cant believe all of the silly STUFF that has been put out in the press this week! It really makes me sad that people want to tear other people down just for the sake of magazine sells and hits on websites! Unfortunately, it seems like BAD is what sells!
As for the shot of me taken outside of a dressing room, I wasnt aware that some creepy paparazzi was able to get a picture of me from where I was in the store. When did it become so out of control, that I cant come out of a dressing room to show my sister a shirt Im trying on? It seems to me there needs to be better laws and more boundaries on these photographers!
Ive also been told there are some people upset about some pictures taken of me with friends making goofy faces! Well, Im sorry if those people looked at those pics and took them wrong and out of context!
In NO way was I making fun of any ethnicity! I was simply making a goofy face. When did that become newsworthy? It seems someone is trying to make something out of nothing to me. If that would of been anyone else, it would of been overlooked! I definitely feel like the press is trying to make me out as the new ‘BAD GIRL’!
I feel like now that Britney is back on top of her game again, they need someone to pick on! Lucky me! haha Anyway, I just wanted to let you guys know what is on my heart. You guys know me and have been by my side every step of the way!
You guys know my heart and know the most important things to me are my friends, family, fans, and GOD! In NO WAY do I want to disappoint any of you! But, when I have made mistakes in the past, I feel like Ive owned up to them and apologized.
Anyway, I really wish everyone would stop focusing on my personal life and get back to focusing on what I love! Music
and Acting! Hopefully, I will be touring again this fall! Yayy! =] It will be a nice change to be back out on the road
again! xoxo Blessings.. Miley =)
You will note that the tone of this message implies that Miley Cyrus sees nothing wrong with what she did. It is very true that she may not have intended harm by her actions but, firstly, that is no excuse and secondly, I’d think she’d have the mental ability (and the PR team) to tell her that other people might be offended and an apology might be in order. I honestly believe that a public apology would go a long way to inform impressionable kids that what she did is WRONG and should not be condoned, explained away or emulated. She does apologize if YOU have taken the photos out of context, tho. That is about as far as she goes. She asks since when does “making a goofy face” become newsworthy. My reply is that “making a goofy face” becomes newsworthy when a public figure is photographed making a “goofy face” that offends billions of people on the planet — just like it was newsworthy when the Spanish Olympic basketball team was photographed making the same “slant eye” gestures for their team photo before they went to China for the Olympics. If she were merely sticking out her tongue (like she often does) or pursing her lips then that sort of “goofy faced” behavior is not newsworthy. Pulling your eyes back at a slant with a bunch of your Caucasian friends at the expense of your sole Asian friend in the photo becomes insulting and “newsworthy”. She claims if it had been “anyone else” than “it would have been overlooked”. True, I’m sure there are many insensitive people in the world who have no problem mocking and making fun of other people. Sadly, right now in the world there are folks calling each other really hurtful names, etc. and those actions will be overlooked. But when you are a very public figure, making millions of dollars from your growing fan base, behavior like that does not and should be overlooked. I absolutely contend that if any other celeb had been photographed doing this same thing, it would’ve still been a big deal. What is MOST TROUBLING in Miley’s case is that she has influence over YOUNG CHILDREN. If kids learn that this kind of “goofing” around is OK then they will, likely grow up to think that it is “OK” to “joke around” like this (as is evident from the many people who feel that this behavior is “no big deal” and should be laughed off). Finally, I take offense that she feels the need to mention GOD in her message … as if merely reminding people of her Christianity is another reason to excuse her behavior. I can tell you that in my many years of education in the Church (I attended Church faithfully until I was about 18 years old) I was always taught to respect other people and that mocking people in a joking manner is wrong.
In the end, I am now starting to believe that Miley Cyrus really has no idea that her actions are hurtful to others and sees nothing wrong with what she did … and that is the saddest thing of all. That she finds no fault at all with the hurt and pain that her actions cause others is kind of pathetic to me. When I was a teacher, I heard kids say and do some really hurtful things to one another (name calling at its worst) and I used every opportunity to try and explain to those kids what effect their bullying actions might have on others, even if they didn’t mean any harm. Sometimes I was successful and got thru to the kids, other times I was not … that is just a fact of life. I just cannot and will not endorse or rationalize anyone’s offensive behavior, not in any capacity. I just wish that someone had taken Miley aside to try and educate her on the importance of respecting other people. Mebbe if she wasn’t so bizzy focusing on Music and Acting then she might’ve learned those lessons at home or in school. It is my sincere hope that other young, impressionable children do not learn these lessons from her. In my estimation, she is unworthy of being a role model in that capacity.

I’m surprised that she didn’t try to claim that the only asian in the pic was goofying around and making “round eyes”.
February 5th, 2009 at 9:07 am
Thank you Trent, that was a very thoughtful response.
There should be zero tolerance of racist behaviour from anyone, but particularly from teenage pop stars, and if she thinks there is nothing wrong with what she’s done then she must be getting these ideas from someone in her life who has made Miley believe she is just goofing around.
February 5th, 2009 at 9:08 am
Trent this could be the lamest story you have ever posted on….why are we still even talking about this? I’m so over Miley Cyrus and EVERYTHING she does.
February 5th, 2009 at 9:08 am
lmao @ alisaj29.
People are tooooooo sensitive these days. RELAX.
There are bigger things to worry about than what a fleeting celeb is doing these days with her friends.
We’ve all done things like this before. And if you haven’t, you’re a liar.
February 5th, 2009 at 9:09 am
It’s amazing how much things get blown out of proportion. Or is the asian in the picture required to admit he was wrong for widening his eyes in an attempt to look “white” too?
She’s 16, she’s going to make mistakes. It sucks that it’s going to happen in front of the world, but picking her apart isn’t going to help anyone. Why doesn’t the media concentrate on real racism problems in the world instead of Miley Cyrus squinting her eyes?
**I’m not a fan of Miley Cyrus, so don’t jump on me for “defending” her**
February 5th, 2009 at 9:13 am
Trent, I totally agree with you 100% about the whole God situation. God didn’t have control over her while being offensive and making fun asians. This is an in- my-own-opinion kind of statement, but I can’t stand when people think God is the answer to all problems such as a lack of judgement like this. Like, if God’s in your life then all is good and all will be great and you’ll never be offensive to anyone.
February 5th, 2009 at 9:17 am
or maybe because she was drunk/high in these pictures she made poor choices. who knows.
February 5th, 2009 at 9:21 am
@ Jackelynn - just a tiny note here…not all Asian people have ’squinty’ eyes. Many, like the guy in the photo, have wide, as you call them, “white” eyes. But way to be ignorant, though. Well done.
February 5th, 2009 at 9:28 am
I was thinking exactly what jadedsweetie said -
anybody think she looks super high?? I do!! maybe not slanty “asian” eyes, just dopey eyes…
February 5th, 2009 at 9:29 am
I think people are completly overreacting, its pretty obvious their just goofing around. Whats the big deal, the white kids are pretending to have asian features and the asian kid is pretending to have white features. Their obviously friends and are having a good time, just poking fun at eachother. No body in the pic looks offended why should enybody else be.
February 5th, 2009 at 9:29 am
I’m over her drama
February 5th, 2009 at 9:30 am
Meh. I’m still waiting for her to justify to me why she’s famous.
February 5th, 2009 at 9:31 am
OMG are you still on this crap!!! I usually love this blog but this is not a big deal….and most people see that on all the blogs this lame story is on..i am glad she didn’t straight out apologize….where one person is offend by something another person see nothing wrong it’s all in your perspective….she probably wasn’t even paying attention to what faces she was making….and before you all say i am defending her because i am a fan..oh hell no i do not care about her one way or another…What i am sick of is this country making a big deal out of everything especially when it comes to stars….everything they do is blown out of proportion… this is not news worthy..more important things are going on in the world….
February 5th, 2009 at 9:31 am
Miley is a quasi-talented, flavor of the month who will hopefully be gone just as fast as she rose to stardom. That said, WHERE IS HER PUBLICIST MAKING HER OFFER AN APOLOGY!!! Of course an adolescent isn’t gonig to see that her actions are offensive, racist and altogether idiotic. If she doesn’t think it’s offensive, then maybe she shouldn’t complain about the photographers following her or the fact that she sounds like a grown man when she speaks. Anyway, she is a waste of time.
February 5th, 2009 at 9:33 am
@Rose - how is the Asian kid pretending to have white features?
February 5th, 2009 at 9:34 am
Jackelynn, the media should only concentrate on “real racism” huh? so racist actions against asians are not “real racism”? thanks. as an asian american, with large non-squinty eyes by the way, i’m so tired of others feeling it’s okay to joke about/make fun of asians as if we won’t mind. The fact that people make the excuse “everyone’s done this at some point in time/she’s just a kid” does not make it okay. racism and ignorance start when one is young. If you grow up thinking it’s okay to belittle people of different cultures and races, you’ll probably turn into an adult that continues to think such behavior is acceptable. Sure, celebs get picked on more than private citizens, but it’s unacceptable behavior for ANYONE.
February 5th, 2009 at 9:36 am
wow, thank you cassie, for your response to jackelynn. so the only asian person in the photos is 1) not laughing, 2) actually not making any “goofy” face at all, 3) not “widening” his eyes in an attempt to look white (btw, other ethnicities have round eyes too, including asian people). and actually, racial stereotypes in the media/public eye are a REAL racial issue, since they affect how society portrays/looks at asians. not every racial problem is epic. racism obviously still exists and this is just fuel to the fire.
im not asking for world peace here, just asking for a girl who is in the public eye to own up to her mistakes. thank you trent, in a world of crappy, mindless blogs, i really appreciate your post and your thoughts.
and all of them look like douches, btw. the asian guy should get new friends.
February 5th, 2009 at 9:40 am
Lol. It’s only offensive if you want it to be. Seriously.
February 5th, 2009 at 9:45 am
Trent - great response! Kids did this to me when I was younger and I was affected by the teasing, the singing, the senseless torture of feeling different. I didn’t want to be asian if it meant people would treat me like that. I’m not proud of it, but I pushed away my culture. Luckily as I grew up, I gained my identity back and now I feel sorry for those kids who felt the need to pull their eyes back at me. And the stupid part of it all was, I don’t even have slanty eyes. Sigh.
February 5th, 2009 at 9:49 am
and if you happen to think this is Ok because you used to do it in school because everyone else did, you’re part of the problem. It’s no wonder you don’t find it offensive.
February 5th, 2009 at 9:50 am
babybunny…exactly!!! And do we forget this girl is ummmm 16. Not that the age makes her dumb but probably immature and a little clueless as to what could offend other nationalities.
I do get she’s famous (for whatever that is) but….she’s still like a kid…..relax people!
February 5th, 2009 at 9:54 am
I’d be more concerned that they looked stoned out of their minds.
February 5th, 2009 at 9:55 am
She sucks…I love how she tries to bring Brittney into this crap!
February 5th, 2009 at 10:05 am
Trent, you are flipping out about this WAY too much. And if she was even in fact being offensive, I’m sure her PR team that you referenced knew enough to tell her not to admit fault - that’s the worst thing she could do. I do rally your opinion of celebrities being mindful of being in the public eye (Michael Phelps, for example) but these people are still human and are still going to goof around with their friends and make mistakes, just like everyone else does.
February 5th, 2009 at 10:08 am
There are people on the planet that have not done “the slanty eye thing”, and yes it is an issue when the person doing it is a public figure and POSES for a photo that will be a permanent statement.
Miley is saying, yes, I think it’s okay to make fun of an ethnicity.
Whether you agree with her, is whether or not you find it offensive.
Frankly, I don’t. There’s no humour there, just cheap, unimaginative waste of time.
February 5th, 2009 at 10:08 am
Miley and Katy Perry, please go away!
February 5th, 2009 at 10:10 am
Great post Trent. Your heartfelt comments are what makes your blog stand out from the other mindless, vulgar, mean-spirited blogs out there. And how dare she drag our dear Britney into this mess? Bad Miley!
February 5th, 2009 at 10:13 am
@vic…agree w/u 100%
February 5th, 2009 at 10:14 am
@jason…RIGHT ON!
February 5th, 2009 at 10:16 am
Am I the only one that realizes that they are doing that only because they are so high???? Duh get with it people!
February 5th, 2009 at 10:16 am
if she truly believes she was just making “goofy faces” then let’s see if she starts pulling her eyes back every time she poses for the paps. amazing how private photos of her keep “leaking” online…are we sure papa joe simpson isn’t her pr/manager?
February 5th, 2009 at 10:17 am
I would like to thank you for posting a follow up to Miley’s supposed follow up. I think it’s stupid of her to think she did nothing wrong when she obviously did. What she did might not be a big deal to some but since she is on a freaking show for KIDS, she has to realize that she is a role model for little girls who should not be taught that it’s okay to make fun of others. And if she did, have the guts to apologize. Don’t make it out to be because she’s young.. obviously, she doesn’t really think she’s that young if she’s dating a 20 year old!
February 5th, 2009 at 10:17 am
I think something we should all be concerned about is not that Miley is being an idiot yet again, she has certainly proven she has no sense of judgment and continually makes offensive, controversial and stupid decisions, is that her 22 year old or whatever boy toy is doing it too. Shouldn’t he have the sense not to make fun of/look like hes making fun of other races? Miley’s age is no excuse, I know 7 year olds who know that’s wrong to make fun of other people period. You would think she would know by now every picture she takes WILL find its way to the internet and she WILL be pegged for it somehow. Well I suppose the only thing we can be really greatful for is that she is not pulling a Vanessa Hudgens and taking fully nude pictures because I for one do not want to see that.
Miley is an immature spoiled little girl who just doesn’t get it. She is wrong as usual but at this point I feel like the most effective point of action would be to ignore her, since pointing out her flaws seems to do nothing but encourage her.
February 5th, 2009 at 10:20 am
i really think this is silly, people are waaaaay to sensitive to every last thing these days. the asian friend in the picture does not seem offended, he knows his friends are joking with him, not at him. differences in ethnicity can be joked about in a harmless manner, in fact i think it’s a healthy and normal thing to do. as long as there’s nothing hateful behind it i think it’s fine. i agree it’s unfortunate young children will see this picture, but frankly it’s not miley’s job to teach children right from wrong, that is on the shoulders of the parents. and kids wouldn’t be exposed to this picture if the media hadn’t sensationalized it in the first place!!!
February 5th, 2009 at 10:21 am
Wow. Not only does she make fun of her ethnic fans, she also thinks all her fans are reaalllly stupid, and will legitimately believe this is just a usual “funny face.”
And for the record, yes I have done this “face.” In grade five. And believe me my parents put me in my place. And I’m still embarrassed about it.
We all make mistakes, yes she’s young, yes she intended it be harmless. The difference is realizing you’ve made a mistake. That’s being “grown up” and I’m sorry, but this “apology” just doesn’t cut it for me; I certainly made a better one when I made this same mistake in grade five.
February 5th, 2009 at 10:22 am
Are we really still talking about this picture??? Lets focus our efforts on actual racism with the intention to hurt others that is going on in the world right now….Stand up comedy should be an issue IMO because soooo many times their acts are based on making light of sterotypes to get a laugh….which they do( they are public figures as well)……whats the issue in the big picture…..is Miley Cirus really promoting racism to her young fans??….NO, it was ONE picture that got leaked out to the public, if she keeps up the ignorance then it might be news worthy but until then all I see is ONE stupid picture displaying poor judgement on her part.
February 5th, 2009 at 10:26 am
I can understand why you feel the need to post a blog discussing this. I have nieces and nephews that look up to her and her show, and I have friends who are asian (korean, chinese, japanese, filipino, and vietnamese). I can only hope that Miley Cyrus will own up to and admit that it was an insensitive gesture and that she apologizes for the insult to anyone it may have caused. It’s not easy to be any race when it is a minority where you live, and I feel for people who are teased/ bullied about their race or how they look. I think instead of trying to justify it as something small, she should apologize. But we also have to remember that she is still technically a ‘child’ and will make mistakes, she still has to learn what is socially acceptable behaviour and hopefully she will be informed when she is wrong, so she can apologize and learn from the errors of her ways.
February 5th, 2009 at 10:28 am
Why is nobody saying anything about the other guy in the photo who is doing the same thing as her? Is it not just as “rude”? Apparently our society is so messed up that we don’t seem to care if random folks make fun of people only when celebs do it which is just funked up. We all did this stuff when we were kids which is what she is, plus she’s pretty dumb & those 2 don’t mix very well. I can’t stand her anyway so I don’t even know why I bothered writing this damn comment…I just want her to go away!!!
February 5th, 2009 at 10:33 am
I wonder when Miley will stop hiding behind “God” and confront living, breathing truth. Until then, she’s just being wily…
February 5th, 2009 at 10:37 am
I also absolutely CAN’T STAND IT when people write “would of” instead of writing “would have”!
Miley needs to focus on grammar as well as music and acting.
February 5th, 2009 at 10:41 am
Thank you, Trent, for saying everything that needed to be said.
February 5th, 2009 at 10:42 am
I think this whole story is a good example of why we should take what we see in the media, particularly the entertainment media, at face value. None of us were in the room when these pictures were taken, so none of us will ever understand what context they were taken under. I’m sure they were never meant for the public to see. How do we know that the Asian guy didn’t say “Miley, you would make a really hot Asian” and then asked her to make the face to prove a point? How do we know that the three of them weren’t so high that they all had dry eyes and happened to rub them at the same time? How do we know they weren’t doing it because they were racist? My point is, we will likely never know, and we should not condemn her actions based on assumption. I sympathize with those that were offended, but maybe they should also ask themselves why they are so offended? Do you walk out of a movie when someone makes a disparraging remark about your race/gender/religion/sexuality? I think it is something that she said she was sorry if anyone happened to be offended. As people, we need to stop with hurrying to have each others heads on a stick. That is what truly feeds racists!
February 5th, 2009 at 10:49 am
Thanks Trent, you’re awesome. I dislike Miley even more now
February 5th, 2009 at 11:13 am
Okay, first she should apologize for offending anyone. When you are in the spotlight and famous unfortunately you shouldn’t be caught doing something like this, because you know the whole world is going to have words about it.
Second, I don’t think she was being racist well not intentionally anyway. We have all done this or something similiar when we were kids.
Don’t we all make fun at our friends sometimes?
Racism to me is hatred. If she was racists she would not even be friends with this Asian boy or hanging around with him having laughs.
Some people might find this offensive and racists but I think that is being oversensitive.
February 5th, 2009 at 11:17 am
thing is, i don’t even know who this girl is.
what i do know is, when a friend (or hey even strangers) make fun of my “big black booty” i am not offended.
i think the way that some asian eyelids are shaped is really cool! it’s like…evidence of evolution for me.
if i was to do something like that in a photo it’s because i would be looking up to my asian friends.
i’m of course am not saying this girl was doing the same thing…
but really, chill. it’s a personal photo.
it’s the public who is making the “asian eyes” offensive.
February 5th, 2009 at 11:25 am
I don’t know, I’m on the fence with this situation. One the one side I can see how these photos are offensive to a certain group of people and taking them, and feeling that there is nothing wrong with making faces like that is poor judgement. I also think it’s poor taste to take someone else’s problems and subsequent turn around and use it as the excuse for the attention you are getting. I think Miley should have taken the time to apologize for offending anyone, even if she personally didn’t feel like she did anything wrong, after all PR does go a long way. HOWEVER on the other hand she does make a point that even though she is famous she is still entitled to have a life of her own. If it were anyone of us who write these comments no one would care because we are not famous. It’s sad to say but it’s true. I often feel bad for celebrities when paps and others take their love of getting the shot too far. It’s a fine line altogether.
February 5th, 2009 at 11:27 am
Oh and I will say in response to some of the other posts that there is a guy holding a wine glass in one of the pictures, and I don’t know about anyone else but I generally drink wine out of my wine glasses and nothing else. So it is entirely plausible that Miley was engaging in some illegial activities which is the reason for her actions… it actually suprises me that none of the newsmedia has gone there with this story!
February 5th, 2009 at 11:36 am
rock on, trent! awesome post
February 5th, 2009 at 11:46 am
Everyone that doesn’t think this is a big deal is a moronic BIGOT.. are you guys F-in kidding me? No $hit its a big deal and no $hit celebs are blown out of proportion!! They lead an indirect example to young children without any real choice. These disguestingly ugly non talented “celebs” like Miley cyrus or hanna montana whatever the f she is, is bombarded in our society… thanks trent for not being a lame moron unlike some of your pityful readers..
February 5th, 2009 at 11:47 am
Thank you for your response. I could not have agreed more. Well said!
February 5th, 2009 at 11:47 am
She really dosn’t realize that some people might be offended by her actions. That is the saddest part.
Anyways , I bet the majority of her fans don’t care about it, even asian ones. Kudos for your heartfelt post, Trent.
You seem like a very genuine person.
Don’t ever turn into a perez hilton. You are from a different league.
Thanks so much for entertaining us!
Vic from Paris
February 5th, 2009 at 11:52 am
I don’t think its a big deal. I’m part korean and when kid would do that growing up, it was in good fun.
February 5th, 2009 at 11:55 am
I totally 100% agree with you trent. This is not a apologize at all in fact this is a total slap in the face to me. Me being a chinese american. I find this quote and quote apologize ever more wrong then the photo. I never really like her to begin with but now after reading what she had to say she is just a total bitch. I’m not surprise by this with they type of family she has.
Thank you trent for your heartfelt words. The world would be a better place with more people like you.
February 5th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
Ugh, she is SUCH a spoiled brat. And Trent rules. : )
February 5th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
I dunno..just making a “goofy “face? Why were they ALL making the SAME ‘face’? I feel like it was totally planned, but I don’t think her and her friends are with it enough to know that making that ‘face’ can be offensive. Whatever, I wish we weren’t constantly being informed of everything that girl does..she’s the most annoying person ever, and totally not worth anyone’s time.
February 5th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
honestly what do you people expect of miley cyrus? she’s an idiot asshole. I’m 16 as well and I for one know that slanting my eyes back IS racist and people will find that offensive, just because its not in the form of a swear doesn’t make it any bit less offensive. By the way just because the asian gentlemen in the middle has big eyes, it doesn’t mean hes widening them, some people just have bigger eyes. duh.
@ KENT
why did you even bother commenting if it was strictly about grammar??
February 5th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
As an asian american I found this so called apologize more offensive then the photo. The way she dismissed us like that like she did nothing wrong I find so insulting. The photo itself was wrong and if she way still 6 and didn’t know what was right from wrong I would choke it up to just being a kid but she a 16/17 year old teenager now. With that kind of statement make me find her still just a little girl that has no business being in the spotlight. I feel sorry for all those little girls out there who have her as a role model.

[...] Fergie Parties With Paris Hilton (Popsugar) Miley Cyrus Isn’t Racist, Really (Pink Is The New Blog) [...]
February 5th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
Trent, thanks for your heartfelt comments.
I am appalled at the people who dismiss it. “Focusing on the real racism” — it’s subtle things like this that people let slide that help perpetuate racism. It’s not just hate crimes or segregation.
I’m not Asian, but so many little kids get teased about their eyes or face “Ching chong ching chong.”
And just b/c there’s an Asian kid in the photo does not make it ok. I’ve been in the room where someone used the n-word playfully, and I didn’t say anything, which I later regretted. He could have been just going along with his friends. (Note he’s not pulling at his eyelids).
She’s not the only one to do this, and won’t be the last, but being in the public eye there is a certain responsibility she carries, whether she likes it or not. Trent, I agree that it’s truly sad that she, or some of the ppl commenting, do not even realize how offensive it is.
February 5th, 2009 at 12:45 pm

wtf… Miley is such a hypocrite. I almost threw up in my mouth when she mentioned God. Puh-lease.
February 5th, 2009 at 12:53 pm
Ok, new question…is it really just Miley that is to blame for offending people? What about all of the media outlets that have put this out there for the world to see (pinkisthenewblog included)? By broadcasting this to the world, how are they not perpetuating racism, and therefore just as guilty as Miley? When people buy magazines to view these pictures, or click on stories on websites and blogs, they are profitting off of racism. When we buy into it, and e-mail it to our friends, how are we not perpetuating racism ourselves? If this is offensive material, why is there no censorship to prevent us from seeing it without first being warned that it is offensive?? And why do we just accept that it is offensive because we are told it is, why aren’t we allowed to make up our own minds? I’m not condoning her actions, and I’m not arguing that it is not offensive, just that we are so swayed by what the media tells us, that we don’t take time to get all of the information.
I do not tolerate racsim, or discrimination of any kind. In fact, I would like to ask Krista what the difference is between making a racial slur, or insulting the way someone looks (”disgustingley ugly”) or their talent (”non-talented”)? Either way, you are cutting someone down to make yourself feel better, so why is one acceptable over the other to you?
David, what gives you the right to call her a “total bitch”, or to insult her entire family (who are not in any of these pictures)? Same goes for B calling her an “idiot asshole”.
Hate is hate, and it is not limited to race. Those who make disparraging remarks about her are no better than she!
P.S. I am NOT a Miley Cyrus fan, just in case anyone wanted to try to use that against me!
February 5th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
This is getting really old! I’m so sick of hearing how this is “the rudest thing they’ve ever seen” there’s people out there doing hard core drugs, drinking and driving, etc.. and you’ve spent more time complaining about a 16 year old girl making a FACE in a picture! Now you’re saying she does not deserve to be in the public eye as a role model… well guess who put her there, You guys! You wonder why celebrities go crazy? It’s because people like you that have nothing better to do than to critique their every single move. Let them have a life too. I would love to look back at pictures when you guys were 16 and see that in not ONE picture were you making a funny face. Seriously, let it go already.
February 5th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
It’s sad to see how many people think it’s no big deal and that Miley doesn’t need to apologize. I’ve seen a lot of people defend her because “she’s just a kid”. If she is old enough to operate a vehicle, she should most definitely know her actions are more than just making a “goofy face”.
I’m sure she was making the face to have fun with her friends and didn’t mean any harm by it, but she also needs to own up to her actions, admit she was wrong to do it, and apologize.
I wonder if people would have the same reactions if she and her friends all painted their faces black (a la Ted Danson in the 90s) just for fun.
February 5th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
@Kyleigh — your comment that public discussion of this matter is “perpetuating racism” is utterly absurd. To remain quiet on a matter like this is tantamount to endorsing it. As I’ve said twice before, whether or not YOU are personally offended is not the point. The fact that it is an offensive act that many hold as a racist act is the point. You are right, hate is hate … and the more we talk about hateful behavior, the more others are made aware that it is utterly reprehensible and should not be swept under the rug.
February 5th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
Everyone needs to get over themselves. When you make fun of stereotypes you take the sting out them. When I was little the worst thing in the world was to be called a fag… so we started calling everyone a fag. When it became a less taboo word, the thrill of throwing it around as an insult faded and eventually people stopped using it as one. It’s a picture of a bunch of teenagers acting ridiculous. Clearly no one is offended in it. When did we get to a point that we can’t discuss people’s differences like adults? And when on earth did pictures of teenagers become newsworthy?
February 5th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
Trent, while I can understand your outrage at Miley Cyrus and these ridiculous photos, I’m a little concerned that you didnt take the same stance when the prince harry video was put up. I believe you mentioned something to effect of soldiers behaving that way to relieve the pressures of battle (??). I don’t know if any of your other readers have noticed this, but in all honestly, I really did not pick up the kind of anger/frustration in your tone while responding to Miley Cyrus when you were responding to the Prince Harry stuff.
Also, I find her ridiculous apology almost more appalling than the photos. almost.
February 5th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
Trent, this is an excellent and thoughtful post.
As to those who do not think this is “real racism” or that racism only matters if you intend to harm, under your logic it would be perfectly acceptable then for a white person (lets say, Miley) to don blackface so long as she didn’t mean to cause harm, right? (In case you couldn’t figure it out… the answer is, wrong.)
What Miley and her (way too old for her) bf are doing is “real racism.” The “chill out” mentality is what allows it to persist in everyday American culture and anyone promoting such an approach ought to be ashamed of themselves.
February 5th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
@Trent - I was just trying to make the point that all of the people who are so offended by this, would not be if this had not been broadcast to the masses. I certainly do not think that pinkisthenewblog is a vehicle for spreading racism (and I want to state for the record that I am a hardcore fan who obsessively visits many times per day). I think meaningful dialogue is warranted and so important, but the personal attacks on Miley do not make for meaningul discussion. It just takes us down another avenue of hate and hurt. Should she be sorry for this unfortunate display, yes. Should she have to endure hearing what some of these people have to say, no. It brings us no closer to the solution.
February 5th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
@Amanda — I absolutely never said anything like “something to effect of soldiers behaving that way to relieve the pressures of battle” — I never, ever defended his actions. I never, ever said that I condoned or was “OK” with his actions. News of his actions came months after they occurred and came out WITH an apology from the Prince. If anyone got the impression that I was OK with what he did, they are wrong … I do not condone any attack on any person. So let me clarify, I was very offended, in particular, when Prince Harry referred to a fellow soldier as a “Paki” — a term as offensive to Middle Eastern people as the “N” word is here in the US.
Here is what I said in that post: “I am not even going to begin to try rationalize Harry’s remarks, they’re pretty deplorably insensitive … I suspect, too, that Harry was prolly trying to joke around and ‘be cool’ with his friends (something dumb guys do all the time) … again, not an excuse.” http://pinkisthenewblog.com/home/2009/01/prince-harry-is-sorry-for-making-racial-slurs-on-video/
February 5th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
aaamen. love you, trent. you’re awesome. =)
February 5th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
@B - you may not be interested in grammar, but I am. So there. Until I see a rule on this blog stating grammar comments are forbidden…
Besides, you’ll notice I also commented about Miley hiding behind God. For consistency, perhaps you “should of” also commented about my other comment.
Care to comment?
February 5th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
Bitch, please. Don’t bring Britney into all your trash
February 5th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
@Kyleigh — I see your point but, again, silence isn’t the answer. I’m sure there are many questionable behaviors that celebrities (well, all of us really) engage in that don’t get broadcast and, of course, don’t cause a stir. But when something like this does come out, I personally feel it’s important to condemn this sort of behavior. I’m not at all looking to hurt Miley Cyrus in anyway but if truthful expressions of disapproval for her behaviors causes her pain, then maybe she will reconsider that her “harmless” behavior isn’t harmless at all.
February 5th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
well said. bravo!
February 5th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
As a person of Chinese descent, these photos really don’t bother me. I see it as a stupid, idiot 16 year old acting like a stupid idiot. Who hasn’t acted stupid when they were that age?
As far as being a role model, I could have told you LONG before these photos ever came out that she wasn’t an appropriate role model for any young child.
My children are too young to be interested in Hannah Montana, but I know that if I had a preteen, she would NOT be watching that show. Too often parents are oblivious to what their own children are watching on television. If all parents actually paid attention to what their children were watching, people like Miley Cyrus wouldn’t even be famous.
February 5th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
Hate is a pretty strong word.. And I just don’t see how her behavior is HATEful. Not very nice? Yes. Moderately offensive? Yes. Not a good idea? Definitely.
Miley is a moron, and maybe should have grown a pair and apologized. But MAYBE she just doesn’t get it. Maybe she just doesn’t see how messing around with her friends hurt some people. If she had a sign that said “CHING CHONG NIP FONG ASIANS ARE STUPID!!!!” then maybe she would be apologizing a little harder. But I honestly think that the girl just doesn’t understand the harm of what she did. She probably figures that since her asian friend wasn’t offended, then it can’t have been that bad.
I guess that puts me on team “lay off the kid, she’s 16 and 16-year-olds are dumbasses.”
February 5th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
No way am I going to let my kids watch her show again. That is NOT a person that should be promoted by Disney for pre-teen girls.
She has absolutely no class and is insensitive and ignorant. Makes me wonder what kind of parents she has for her to turn out so insincere.
When you were young, did your parents let you get away with such a half-assed so-called “apology” if you offended someone? Most decent parents would not. At 16, Miley Cyrus should know better! Elementary schoolchildren have better manners than she does.
February 5th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
I’m of Asian decent and it doesn’t bother me. In the past I’ve put on a ginger wig and pretended to be one of my ginger friends. She took it fine and the boy in the picture certainly isn’t bothered. It’s genetics, nothing more. We should stop seeing people as races and just see them as a group of kids having fun with each other.
And 20 is in no way the age where someone becomes a full grown man anymore.
This is politcal correctness gone MAD.
February 5th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
Can someone please get Miley away from any and all cameras? PLEASE!
February 5th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
@ L I couldn’t have said it better myself.
February 5th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
@ Tess, I completely agree with you! It’s sad that so many people are in here preaching that this is horrible and not “PC”. The thing that gets me the most is people come on here every single day to see pictures and posts about celebrities and HALF of you if not more comment on them making fun of the person (AND YOU DO TOO TRENT)! So why is it okay when the rules are reversed? If you don’t like what’s going on in this picture then NON of you have any right to ever make fun of a person (which i REALLY dont even think that’s what she was doing) ever again in your life. If you want to dish it you need to learn to take it.
February 5th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
“If that would of been anyone else, it would of been overlooked!”
Oh Miley, it’s “would HAVE” “would HAVE”.
February 5th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
@Crystal — it is one thing to poke fun at the foibles of celebrities but when the joking moves into the area of racism, it’s no longer OK. your ridiculous accusation is absurd and laughably sad.
February 5th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
@Shelly - thank you!
February 5th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
@Trent - NO there’s not a difference! Thats my exact point, you can say whatever you want about whomever you want and its okay. But the second the tables have turned and its something that you could take offense to, it’s a completely different story. How is that fair? I can not believe you have even pulled the race card on this photo. And why all the sudden is “racism” the only thing in the world that is NOT “PC”? I’m sure a lot of people could have taken offense to the comments you and others have posted about them also.
February 5th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
I agree with you Trent. As a teacher, I always tell my students to speak up when they witness offensive language or behavior because just the act of speaking up and saying that you don’t tolerate something goes a long way to curbing the offensive behavior and more importantly, inspiring others to speak up the next time. Silence is compliance!
I think there have been many red flags surrounding Miley Cyrus over the past year or so and I suspect this isn’t the last time something she does or says gets her into hot water. Girlfriend clearly has a few issues. The truth is, no 15 year old rockets to superstardom like she has without any negative repercussions. It’s just not a natural way to live in my opinion and I have never bought her “I’m so grounded” schtick. In this particular case though, I think all she needed to do was offer a sincere apology and she didn’t so that’s why it’s still up for discussion. I agree with those who said they wish she would just go away though. The main issue I have with her is that she has no talent!
P.S. I think she owes Britney an apology too!
February 5th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
For goodness sake I can’t believe this is the third post on this picture.
And can I say what about Christian Bale. He verbally assaulted a guy and threatened him for four minutes straight and its okay because he is hot and talented therefore everyone here ignored it. frankly i’m offended that that behaviour is acceptable. Technically he commited a crime but hey lets not care, instead we have to bag on the 16 year old.
She did a stupid thing. We all have. We have all made fun of someone because of the way they look/act amongst friends. Its not always race, sometimes its hair colour, or weight or sexual orientation or policitcal beliefs. Not one person here can truly say they have never made a joke based around a stereotype. How many people here have told/laughed at a blond joke, have called a person a hippie, have mocked someone who believes in god, grouped all republicans into one big evil group, laughed at a “know how i know your gay” joke. If i follwed most people with a camera/tape recorder I bet frequently I could pull material that someone somewhere in the world would view a offensive. Its not right that she did it but please give this who Miley Cyrus thing a rest.
Quite frankly most people here are so hateful. She made a mistake condemning her and being hateful and ignorant digusting. what a bunch of hypocrits,
February 5th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
is she implying that, to have slanted eyes is to be goofy/ to have a goofy face? what an idiot!
February 5th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
Commenting on someone’s clothes is different than imitating a stereotypical characteristic of a group of people (that not all have). And the fact that she referred to it as a goofy face is even more disgraceful. Pretending to be Asian is goofy ?
February 5th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
Cyrystal - I agree with you. There is such a double standard simply because most people don’t like Miley.
February 5th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
I am ALMOST positive she and her friends were sitting around smoking weed, probably started joking about getting “chinese”. UGH. A former pothead, myself, I have heard this term A LOT!
I wish the photog could have caught HER with a bong! The two pics would have gone together nicely.
What a jack ass.
February 5th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
Amen, Trent! I agree 100% with everything you said here
February 5th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
@Crystal..I agree with you 100%…she was not belittling or making fun of any race ..she was just messing around with some friends, and getting high also, it would seem : ) And why is everything these days always this is racist that is racist when really it isn’t!! I can’t believe people are still arguing about this..hey at least reading all these comments made my day go by faster..now let’s MOVE ON!!!!
February 5th, 2009 at 3:25 pm
@Annoyed.. thank you. This is what gets me the most with this whole post “When I was a teacher, I heard kids say and do some really hurtful things to one another (name calling at its worst) and I used every opportunity to try and explain to those kids what effect their bullying actions might have on others, even if they didn’t mean any harm.” but somehow the tables have turned and its ok to make fun of people on here but it’s “racist” to make a face. If you’re going to slap the hand of one person you need to do so to yourself..
February 5th, 2009 at 3:29 pm
Amen, Trent! Amen. When I read Miley’s post I immediately wanted to write back, but after reading yours, I’ve got nothing to say!
February 5th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
@Crystal — are you serious? why are you so angry? it sounds like you’re acting out … in order to get validated? clearly you don’t agree with my opinion, fine, mebbe you’re the one who needs to move on?
February 5th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
Thank you Trent for the well-thought out response to this issue.
I personally was on the receiving end of many slanty-eyed faces and racially offensive rhetoric when I was in elementary school, although that is not a reason why I am commenting about this issue. I don’t find the picture to be particularly offensive to myself, but the fact that so many people are taking this with a matter-of-fact attitude.
We learn not to say certain words about different races, but why is it alright to make these gestures about Asians when obviously some Asians are offended by it. Just because one Asian may be alright with their friends making these faces doesn’t mean that ALL Asians shouldn’t find it offensive.
I am shocked to read comments that state that it is “ok” to make these faces because “everyone made them when they were a kid”. Just because these faces were made by some children at one point or another, does NOT mean that it’s not offensive to others.
Secondly, I highly doubt most of the people in that picture are “kids”. Her boyfriend, for one, is 20 years old. And if Miley is considered a child, where are her parents? They seem to not be teaching her to grow up into a responsible adult.
Also, what was the point of her bringing up Britney into this whole issue? Sorry Miley, but you are no Britney. And most of the unwanted media attention is brought upon by yourself. You know you’re in the spotlight, so understand that you will be put under a lot of scrutiny. Stop whining about it and get over yourself.
This non-apology is a slap in the face for Asians and proves that she is ignorant to anything that isn’t revolved around her.
February 5th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
@Trent, you wanted to prove you point and I wanted to prove mine. It works both ways.. I’m in in no such manner acting out, you responded to my first post and I responded to yours. I just think it’s funny how things are so different when it’s something that has to do with you. I love your website and read it everyday but I’m not going to sit here and act like its okay for you to make fun of others then all the sudden its not okay when others “make fun” of you… :) That’s all. Thanks buh bye!
February 5th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
@Crystal — whut? if making “fun” of me makes you feel better about whatever point you’re trying to make then, good for you. your contention that the things I write are at all similar to making racist jokes at the expense of others is ludicrous. if that is the point you’ve been trying to make then congrats!
February 5th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
Does she have to end EVERY sentence with an exclamation point?
February 5th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
Its not racist though, from dictionary.com
rac⋅ism
–noun
1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.
There is no hate or intolerance, she is not saying she is better because her eyes are different. She is wrong and stereotyping and being prejudice. It isn’t exactly being racist.
February 5th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
You would think that by 16 years of age, Miley would understand the difference between right and wrong..The fact that she is making up excuses for her behaviour is disgusting. She may still be young, but please, at 16, she should be way past this kind of behaviour, especially considering her young, impressionable fanbase.
February 5th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
I wouldn’t say it is necessarily “racist”, just a incredibly STUPID decision on Miley’s part. But we all know she makes quite alot of decisions like this, so lets just stop talking about her so she goes away.
February 5th, 2009 at 4:21 pm
I don’t think the point is she did something stupid that we have all done. The point is she needs to take responsibility for her actions. These were meant to be private photos. Once they go public she needs to say I was doing something stupid and I am sorry if it offended anybody. She is a celebrity and whether we like it or not a lot of kids look up to her and it makes it seem like it is okay for her people to do that. Yes we have all made fun of someone for race, color, or creed before, but does it make it right? If they had painted their faces black with an African American in the picture would that still just be a goofy face? I think the point is she needs to just own up to a mistake and say it is not right so kids who look up to her do not get the wrong idea.
February 5th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
Trent, I completely agree. I’m only 17 years old and I hate that people use her age as an excuse to make the mistakes she does. Her age does not condone her behaviour in any way as she should have the mental capacity to realize that what she is doing will offend some people regardless of whether she thinks it’s “just a joke”. On top of that, she is a celebrity and you would think that she would realize that people watch her every move and whether she wants to have an influence or not, she does. The fact that this girl has become the representation of my demographic makes me cringe. Fact is, teens know what is right and what is wrong it’s just the stupid ones that choose to ignore it.
P.S - Trent, ignore the haters. They are just ignorant and spiteful people =)
February 5th, 2009 at 4:29 pm
i am of asian decent and i find it sad that it doesn’t bother those who are asian as well. her “apology” is weak at best. when is pulling your eyes back just a goofy face? it makes me angry to think that so many people think it’s okay for her to get away with this because she is young and stupid. would it be okay if she came out and painted her face black? would y’all be saying the same things then? probably not.
February 5th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
Being Asian & an avid reader of this blog, so pardon me for the rant. For those who would have forgotten, the term “slint eyes” was created as a form of racist joke by white men - particularly during the Vietnam war, it means untrustworthy, liar, cheap, whorish. So if many people here feels that it is ok, what would you think if we asian call american foul words such as “cranky red-necks” or “stooopid yankees”. It is disheartening that a blog such as trent (that tries itself not to diss proper topic) have people who sees this event as nothing. Trent, as he has blogged in the past wants proper equality to all, whatever your race, sex, age or culture. It hurts Asian that Americans find this thing as nothing, because unknown to many, it does hurt, it makes feel that you are different - alien.
So even if Miley Cyrus is a no talent wannabe, if some people say that, kids (who are her fanbase) who are impressionable will just see it as nothing & in the end they themselves will do this to hurt other non-white kids. Therefore we have a continuing cycle, don’t we want to stop this racist thing, or are many of you happy to continue to bash people who are of different sex, age & culture?
FYI - not all Asian - in particular of Chinese lineage has small eyes, a number has oval shaped eyes.
February 5th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
I don’t think its that people want to let her get away with it. What she did was wrong. What got me is the amount of effort put into to telling everyone what a horrible person she is because of one photo. It was prejudice and a stereotype but most likely it was not racist. When people use their own examples as it happening to other people and themselves isn’t meant to justify being racist but merely to point out that we are judging her for something that many of us have probably done. We all make jokes, luckily ours aren’t recorded. Isn’t there a famous bible saying about casting stones.
February 5th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
I’m just surprised @ all these people saying “we’ve all done it, you’re a liar if you havent”, “it’s not a big deal, just goofing around”..
You do realize you’re proudly declaring yourself so racist that you can’t understand that NO, most of us are NOT liars and we HAVEN’T done that? and YES, it IS a big deal?
By the way, as of now, the Foreign Minister of China has banned her from entering the country. Some of us Asians are pretty offended. I agree we shouldn’t be wasting our time on her, but we should be worried about her legions of impressionable fans.
February 5th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
Not done the exact same thing….just have at some point made a joke regarding stereotypes or mocked someone. That doesn’t make me nor Miley a racist, nor does it make us proud of it. That means we have made mistakes just like everyone else. Unlike you, I at least realize this other than living in ignorant bliss.
February 5th, 2009 at 4:56 pm
OMFG TRENT, GET OVER IT.
February 5th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
@sasasa, THANK YOU for pointing out that those who say “we’ve all done it” are blatantly declaring their ignorance.
@Sylvie, I am so glad that there are still clear-thinking teens out there like you. Your use of real vocabulary is a breath of fresh air. Not all teens are like Miley, there IS hope!
February 5th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
crystal obviously doesn’t make any sense. she’s just raging. anyway, i completely agree with trent..racism is clearly an issue here and it should most definitely be addressed. i don’t understand pple trying to be all blase about it. i’m offended by both the photo and her response. what the.
February 5th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
@Trent. I totally agree with your assessment here: “As I’ve said twice before, whether or not YOU are personally offended is not the point. The fact that it is an offensive act that many hold as a racist act is the point.” The MAJORITY does not get to decide what is offensive to the MINORITY. Likewise, if the MAJORITY wants to claim “what’s fun,” it needs to realize that it’s doing so without taking into account of the MINORITY. The issue with Miley is that she is completely unapologetic about being insensitive. While it is true that many of us have been insensitive at some point or another, not ALL OF US would be unapologetic about it. Ignorance is one thing–once she’s been told that her actions are wrong, her insistence on defending them becomes something else–RACISM.
February 5th, 2009 at 5:09 pm
@asiangirl, blasé is the best word to describe it!
February 5th, 2009 at 5:09 pm
btw, what’s wrong with all the asians who are okay with all of this???
February 5th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
chill out, she’ s in the picture with an asain. he couldv’e been eggin’ her on.
February 5th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
@Kathy, even if the Asian was “eggin’ her on”, how does succumbing to that still make it okay?
February 5th, 2009 at 5:24 pm
This is not racism..have any of you holier than thou even looked it up…stop saying that it is when clearly you don’t know the word…the only that did was HANNAH and the definition does not apply to miley….Oh and asiangirl the Asians that are ok with this realize it is not racist….and she did apologize to those who were offended ” I’m sorry if those people looked at those pics and took them wrong and out of context!” See ” I’m Sorry” there’s the apology to all of you out there that were offended by this photo…..

I don’t understand how Crystal is making fun of Trent? All she said was Trent makes fun of Celebrities, everyday on the blog… which he does. That sounds like a fact. So… her point is that, isn’t that some form of belittling another person, like racism? I mean… one step further, the man (Trent) makes enough money now to LIVE on making fun of people, via this blog. So… belittling a person to make oneself better… sounds a lot like racism. That’s her point. It’s okay for you to belittle others, but if anyone else does it… it’s wrong. That’s what I read from Crystal. That has nothing to do with making fun of Trent.
I mean, forget racism, how about just plain making fun of people’s clothing styles or hair cuts, or other various things that make them unique… similar to the things that make us unique in our race. I read that type of stuff quite often on this blog. That’s the point. I don’t think I can visit this site anymore.
February 5th, 2009 at 5:34 pm
Shut up Trent. When do you become the moral standard for what celebrities should and shouldn’t do? If famous people like Miley didn’t screw up once in awhile, people like you wouldn’t have anything to write about.
February 5th, 2009 at 5:36 pm
Hear, hear, Trent! You’ve said it very eloquently and I applaud your post. If we all stood up against this sort of poor behaviour, it would stop. Thank you for your part!
February 5th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
@annoyed, your writing style is confusing to read. It takes away from what you are trying to say. Did you not learn how to write proper and complete sentences in school?
February 5th, 2009 at 5:42 pm
I think that making fun of someone’s fugly outfit is far different from making fun of something very personal about them. A bad fashion choice is something a person can work on. Saying someone is ugly or a bitch or an asshole or that they have a lousy family is crossing a line. Trent’s musings are, for the most part, in good fun. He is always very complimentary of celebs (except Kim Stewart, but he dropped that beef a while ago), definitely more so than other entertainment bloggers out there. Face it people, we wouldn’t come back everyday without the clever rhetoric.
I defintely see Crystal’s point, and it was kind of along the same lines as what I was trying to get across. It really doesn’t matter what the insult is, or who it is directed towards. It is wrong to disrespect anyone! I do think Miley needs to offer a more heartfelt apology, but I do not think she deserves the hateful things people are now saying about her. Two wrongs don’t make a right, people!
Trent, I understand and appreciate your opinions. My criticsm in how you have responded to some of us with differing views from you is that you are not being very diplomatic. Please remember that we are your audience before jumping back at us so quickly and with much disdain. To say that one of my opinions was “utterly absurd” and Crystal’s “laughably sad” is not being very respectful.
February 5th, 2009 at 5:44 pm
This is pathetic that people are resorting to insults about a way a person writes….especially on the internet, especially in a thread which is about a person mocking someone else and how horrible it apparently is. oh the irony.
February 5th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
This is the most ridiculous thing I have seen blown out of proportion in a seriously long time. Weren’t we all young once and doing stupid stuff. Who cares that she squinted her eyes, she shouldnt have to apologize for doing something that I’m sure thousands of other teenagers have done before. If someone hadn’t posted the stupid pic and nobody would be talking about it right now or making a big deal out of it. Get over it and move on to more important things!
February 5th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
Agh! Im so sick of this subject! Get over it!
February 5th, 2009 at 6:08 pm
@UHH……I’m so sorry I didn’t realize this was English class. I was not trying to form complete sentences, this is just a comment, not paper. Also I think i got my point across just fine, but thanks for the tip!!
February 5th, 2009 at 6:10 pm
Stop lashing out at Trent. It’s his blog, and if you don’t like what hes writing about then don’t read it!
February 5th, 2009 at 6:14 pm
In response to “Ridiculous” — Yes many teens do things like this, but how many are in the public eye? Miley should be a little more careful, I mean look at how young her fans are. They look up to her (god only knows why), and if they see her doing this, they will think its okay. What she did was offensive, but the point is really that she didn’t take any responsibility for it. Becuase she thought it was harmless and she was simply “goofing off” does not mean everyone thinks that way. AND HER 20 YEAR OLD BOYFRIEND SHOULD KNOW BETTER.

oh lord. i didnt even read miley’s blog thing or whatever because i was distracted by all the exclamation points (!!!!!!) geeeesh
February 5th, 2009 at 6:56 pm
“Goofy Faces” What a lame @ss excuse. It must be nice to live in a bubble where your oblivious of your surroundings, and how your stupid actions effect others. Honestly is she serious. Sad, because I think she is. Oh, a let not even discuss how shes draped all over some 20 year olds lap.
February 5th, 2009 at 7:01 pm
I’m with Trent on this one. It’s not a matter of “OMG we’re STILL talking about this?!!?!?!” It’s a matter of… something else. My thoughts about this girl aside (and I admit that I do not like her AT ALL), that is NOT a very nice thing to be doing in a picture. My 8 year old cousin idolizes her (for reasons unknown to me) and even though I doubt my cousin will ever see this picture, it still pisses me off. I would NEVER take a picture slanting my eyes like that (OMG *GASP*) no matter how young or immature I was. I can say that because I’m 25 now and never thought that doing that would be hilarious. I agree with Trent that the thing that is the most pathetic about it all is that she refuses to apologize. Whether you think it’s a big deal or not, it’s something that she should be expected to apologize for because of who she is. She was SO OBVIOUSLY making fun of Asians. Does she think we’re idiots? Own up to your effing missteps chica. And yeah, the “God” thing is ENTIRELY tacky.
February 5th, 2009 at 7:13 pm
I am tired of Miley using young fans to give her millions of dollars, but not really doing much for them in return - she has taught them to pose in a shower in a white t-shirt, flash bras, pose half naked, date 20 year old men….she has no real parents or they’d set her straight. she is just a whore in the making.
February 5th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
I think this is being blown completely out of proportion. The Asian kid in the picture is clearly not offended by it, and they are obviously just joking around. How many non-famous people take pictures like this and don’t have to make public apologies for it? She’s just a kid.
February 5th, 2009 at 7:17 pm
katie - how many non famous kids have a fan base of millions of children? come on, act smart..
February 5th, 2009 at 7:27 pm
i’m not a fan of miley cyrus but i can testify as an asian, i seriously don’t find it offending at all. i don’t see the big deal..
February 5th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
Don’t you think non-famous kids are more dangerous role models? they take pictures just like this one, and then post them on their facebooks for all their friends and classmates to see. Don’t you think kids are just as likely to copy their peers, people they see and interact with everyday, as they are likely to copy some pop-tart whose music they listen to on radio disney? If it’s not a problem when “normal” kids do it, then it shouldn’t be a problem when she does it, either. That’s all I’m saying.
February 5th, 2009 at 8:49 pm
again, I’m saddened by the reaction by people who think that this is a non-issue. if you believe that we should be focusing on “real racism issues”, how do you think those issues begin? perhaps at a young age when you’re influenced by someone that you look up to and try to imitate what they do and believe what they believe because they make their living as a role model?? just as we admire celebrities who use their star power for good and charity and bring awareness to causes throughout the world, we should look down upon celebrities who choose to act disrespectful and hateful.
she’s just a kid… who is dating an adult, who is posing in adult poses in adult-geared magazines, who performs and shows up at adult venues… she is not a typical 16 year old, nor does she seem to strive to be one, if she wants to perform in front of an international audienc regularly.
and just because we’ve done disrespectful things before does not make it okay and does not excuse anyone else’s actions. sure I’ve done things I’m not proud of, but at the same time, I’m not a role model for countless impressionable kids.
February 5th, 2009 at 9:22 pm
A lot of these posts have made me really really sad and very disheartened. I don’t even know where to start. Anyhow, I feel like I would be repeating what I have already said.
Trent I am with you 100%
@Katie
It IS or should be a problem. I don’t think people are just looking for things to bash this tween about as though she is just as or more fascinating than Britney.
It should be a problem when our children look up to bad role models who are non celebrities. If my child posted a pick like this with her friends on her facebook, you’d better believe she’d get a serious talking to.
The difference is the millions of young girls who look up to her. She is out there in the spotlight unfortunately for everyone, and she has this photo out there out in the public that is offensive to millions of people and she seems to be unapologetic about it. Because of the spotlight on her she is the example.
The problem with your reasoning is if no one makes a big deal about this, and brushes it off like that is acceptable behavior or makes excuses for it then there will be young fans who think it is okay as well.
But according to some of you above it’s not racist or a big deal. After years of Asian Americans dealing with this- http://www.bluecorncomics.com/pics/seussjap.jpg-we should all just “lighten up.” Because racism and ignorance is such a laugh.
February 5th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
Not making fun of any ethnicities?!?! She should have just apologized instead of making herself look stupider by saying she was just making a “goofy face.” That’s almost like saying Asians have goofy faces! It’s clear what she was doing and she should have just owned up to it.
February 5th, 2009 at 10:23 pm
this is ridiculous. i’ve never posted to this blog before and never thought i would (although i do enjoy it), but this has gotten out of hand. seriously, when did everyone get so sensitive?
i’m proud to be asian, asian-american, asian space american, or whatever you want to call it, and i find these photos 100% inoffensive. her “apology” probably should have included an obligatory “i’m sorry if i offended anyone” even if she didn’t mean it and she probably knows it wasn’t just any old goofy face she was making, but i really don’t think it’s a big deal.
i’m not a miley fan or anything so it’s not like i’m defending her for some hidden agenda. as far as i’m concerned, this is a non-issue. but i speak for me and…me alone.
February 6th, 2009 at 12:14 am
biiiiitch…bitch-bitch…bitch-bitch…….
…this post is boring and long winded!!
February 6th, 2009 at 12:19 am
This is the second post I’ve seen made on this subject, and I felt that I had to say something.
First of all, I think it is sad that all of these people are attacking such a young girl. She’s at that age in her life that she doesn’t think about things before doing them. It is edging on pitiful that grown men and women are picking apart a 16 year old CHILD to try and make a point.
That being said, I’m sorry, but I don’t see anything wrong with these pictures. She is not harming anyone. You people say that she is “not a good role model anymore” because of these pictures. Why? I would like to hear your idea of a good Role Model. Give me the name of ONE girl or woman you deem worthy of being a role model, and I assure you I could go on the internet and find something she did wrong, or a quote or picture taken out of context, and say just as quickly, “see, she is not a role model either”.
It is unfair for you all to be so biased against her simply because she is Miley Cyrus. To all the people getting mad, and saying “OmGzzZ! SHe’s tr\YiNg to drAg BRiTNey INto THisss!”!11″ Did you even take the time to read what she said?
“…I feel like now that Britney is back on top of her game again…”
She was in fact giving her a compliment. We ALL know Brit had a hard fall, so she was giving her props for getting back on the horse and shutting the paps up. But none of you noticed that, because you were being to dense to actually read the statement.
Do you people really think this is the big problem with racism? This picture of a girl making “slanty eyes” is a big threat? How about Rush Limbaguh saying that:
“Obama is a disgrace - he wants the public to think he is Mr. Nice Guy while his thugs are in Alaska looking for dirt on Palin”
Or what about the fact that 3 in 10 Americans ADMIT to having Racial Bias? (http://www.startribune.com/business/22186669.html)
Or this story about white students urinating into the food of black workers? (http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/africa/02/27/saf.racist.video/index.html?iref=mpstoryview)
Or the Former British Prime Minister (an ADULT) using a racial slur (http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/europe/02/04/carol.thatcher.bbc.sacked/index.html#cnnSTCText)
Are you all getting the point?
There are bigger fish to fry then your Miley here, who I don’t believe has done anything even remotely wrong when put in context. It’s like comparing one 2 year old taking a cookie from the cookie jar as opposed to an adult holding an entire Oreo factory hostage.
That’s my 2 cents.
February 6th, 2009 at 12:43 am
@Moves — you should be sorry that you don’t see anything wrong with Miley’s actions. You should also be ashamed. I would offer that Gwen Stefani is a great role model, do your thang and try to dig up dirt. I don’t think most people are “biased” against Miley just because she’s Miley. They, me included, are probably not biased at all — it’s more a matter of being majorly offended by her idiotic behavior. Wrong is wrong. You did a great job of listing some really terrible things — but wrong is still wrong.
February 6th, 2009 at 1:14 am
I think she is right and she shouldn’t make a huge apology if she doesn’t want to and isn’t really sorry. This is blown way out of proportion and it’s not racist just stupid.
People are offended by everything nowadays. It was stupid, but not an offence.
February 6th, 2009 at 1:27 am
Crystal, you frickin’ idiot.
Name-calling is immature and lame. But, I simply felt the need to resort to it in this case. I don’t know you (and thank GOD) but you inspire my disgust. Why? Because you’re sitting here bitching and moaning a point that is ENTIRELY baseless and nonsensical. To compare light-hearted poking of fun at celebs who PURPOSELY throw themselves in the limelight is NOT THE SAME AS POKING FUN (be it intentionally light-hearted or not) AT AN ENTIRE RACE OF PEOPLE. HelllLLlllllOOOOOOOO?!?! People like you, who seem so WILLFULLY ignorant, really boggle my mind. Truly.
Sure, maybe it’s “whatever, not meant to be a big deal!”, and maybe you, being an ignorant, soul-less individual, don’t think it’s a big deal. If you don’t have the compassion or heart to be able to empathize with other human beings, if you can’t understand that this kind of ‘playing around’ could possibly hurt someone else (who isn’t a celebrity trying to sell magazines and should feel comfortable and proud with the features they were born with) even if it doesn’t hurt you AND, not to mention, you feel the need to be pig-headed and stubborn about your own self-important opining…..well then….it pains me to say (not really) the world is better off without people like you in it.
Do us all a favor and stop reading this blog that seems to pain you so so so much or at least just shut the hell up when you feel like ranting about bullshit around these here parts. K? THANKS!!! :) bUH-ByE!!!!
p.s. Trent, I always enjoy reading your silly and fun yet intelligent and empathetic musings. Keep on keepin’ on good buddy!
February 6th, 2009 at 1:40 am
As an asian girl, I do not feel that Miley’s actions were racist AT ALL….. there was no hatred in her actions and i believe it was a goofy face, just as she said. If she put a basketball under her shirt to make fun of “pregnant women”, would she have to issue an apology to all of the pregnant women around the world for that too? Get over it America
February 6th, 2009 at 1:51 am
trent you rule!
February 6th, 2009 at 3:05 am
I’m Asian, and I don’t think it was racist at all. And I can’t even stand Miley Cyrus. She is young, we have all joked around with our mates when we were younger. Except Miley happens to be famous, and is constantly photographed. She’s still a kid, cut her some slack! We have all done stupid things, even at adult age. Look at Michael Phelps, Olympic hero who smokes pot. Jamie Lynn got preggers at 16. Vanessa Hudgens took nude photos of herself. Even if it was mocking her Asian friend, I’m sure it was all in good fun which was meant to be only within that circle of friends. You can’t expect anyone to be perfect, certainly not a naive 16 year old.
February 6th, 2009 at 3:53 am
IMHO regardless if it was intentional or not, Miley should have simply offered an apology for unintentionally offending Asians and whatnot. Admittedly everyone has done something equally offensive but when you’re in the public eye, like her, these matters tend to get blown out of hand.
If she had an inkling of common sense, she would just swallow her pride and say sorry. it’s not that difficult.
I’m Asian and I’m proud of my heritage and culture. It is rather offensive when people mock the way I look. It’s like taking a gun and going around joking about Americans being violent.
Again, someone can say I’m making a big hoo-ha. But if she lets people know that this is alright then what’s next?
February 6th, 2009 at 4:53 am
Well done for such an articulate response - I don’t want to add more to it, other than to say that I too am increasingly annoyed by the hypocrisy of mentioning God every time she needs to defend herself! No wonder people think Christians are a*holes if they go around insulting and offending people, then saying “it’s ok, because God knows my heart”… what BS!
February 6th, 2009 at 7:35 am
I appreciated Trent’s blog entry on this topic and agree with him wholeheartedly. While Miley’s actions may *not* have been of malcious intent, the gesture if still offensive. Since when does the slanty eye gesture become a funny face that should be condoned?
I recently read a story relayed to a mother on a forum where her young daugther at school had her entire class make the slanty eye face to her. She cried and cried. Are the commenters here are annoyed or upset that individuals in Asian society are offended, maybe you should put yourself in that little girls shoes.
February 6th, 2009 at 7:36 am

trent, you bitch. stop blogging about this major bitch ALREADY. don’t you get it? people hate her.
p.s. i am sorry for calling you a bitch. it is just too, fucking annoying.
February 6th, 2009 at 11:32 am
Some people are coming on here claiming to be Asian and saying they are not offended. I am not going to say you are using the anonymity of the internet to make a point because that would be wrong.
Whether you think this is blown out of proportions or not, the fact of the matter is she DID offend people, myself included. A simple apology, instead of excuses would have sufficed and gone a long way to appease the people she did offend.
YOU may not care, but the country of China cares and the mothers of young Asian girls who want surgery to change the shape of their eyes care.
What I find interesting is suddenly Miley is a CHILD that needs protecting, who doesn’t know what she is doing. Yet several months ago when she posed for Vanity Fair in just a sheet with smudged red lipstick on she was old enough to make her own choices and since her parents were okay with it then everyone else should be. So when sex is involved people are fine, but when race is involved suddenly people are too sensitive? I don’t get it.
Is Miley racist? I don’t know, because I thankfully don’t know her, but if you research Asian stereotypes and racism against Asian Americans it becomes obvious that what she and her friends did was in very poor taste. If she is old enough to sexualize herself for America then she is old enough to at the VERY least apologize for offending ANYone, even if the picture was taken out of context.
I think racism in regards to Asian Americans has been a taboo and silent subject for a long time and no one remembers or acknowledges the history of Asians in this country. I think, we need to use this opportunity to eductae ourselves. Go online, look up Asian stereotypes and try to understand WHY some people are offended instead of shrugging it off and leftist propoganda.
Caucasian people in this country, pregnant women, blondes, and obese people, etc do not have the history of racism in this country that Asian Americans have had. If Miley and her friends had put on blackface makeup, the black and African American community would have been angry and rightfully so. It’s the same thing and to make the excuse that they were just making “goofy faces” which is an offensive as well, just makes the situation worse.
February 6th, 2009 at 11:37 am
Just because Miley’s asian friend doesn’t have slanted eyes automatically means that he’s “pretending” to have “white features”?? What’s that about? (Rose, I’m talking to you.) Don’t be so ignorant.
And Trent, as an asian fan of your blog, thank you thank you thank you. I wish more people were like you. =)
February 6th, 2009 at 8:39 pm
@Kyleigh
seriously? did you read any of Crystal’s comments? i think there’s a reason why he called them absurd.
February 6th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
Great comments Trent- you see things clearly and it’s sad some people just don’t get it.
February 6th, 2009 at 11:50 pm
great post! i really enjoy reading your posts and comments. I agree with everything you said.
February 7th, 2009 at 1:47 am
I’m Asian and I don’t feel offended at all… I think people just hate Miley Cyrus too much, so anything she does is slammed by the public :))
February 7th, 2009 at 2:09 am
(Of course, it’s hard not to hate her.) :D
February 7th, 2009 at 8:29 am
I think that it would be diferrent if she did did face on somebody passing by or somethin, but this is just a picture. Nowadays racism is seen in everything. Some people look different than others, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t the same on the inside. I think that’s kind of the point
February 7th, 2009 at 10:13 am
I don’t really think she did anything wrong.. as ‘Zara’ said, “Nowadays racism is seen in everything”. I don’t see anything in that picture that could reeally offend people. I mean, people take pictures like that all the time, and no one says anything. I’m not trying to defend her, cause I don’t even like her that much.. That’s just my opnion.
Sorry, I don’t speak english very well.
February 7th, 2009 at 11:44 am
well said trent :) well said.
February 7th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
I was wondering what you think about this:
http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/00021848.html
OCA is demanding a fuller apology.
February 7th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Seriously, I hate miley cyrus and I think she’ s a spoiled little brat. She takes no responsibility for her actions and shrugs it off. Some kind of role model SHE is…
February 7th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
@kelly - I agree there is a reason why he called Crystal’s comments absurd…because they differed from his point of view. It’s one thing for two people on here with a certain degree of anonymity (say, you and myself for example) to be disrespectful towards each other’s comments. Whether he likes it or not, Trent needs to be a little more diplomatic in the way he responds to his reader’s comments. I don’t appreciate the way he basically dismissed my opinions, and he did the same thing to Crystal.
Did you actually read Crystal’s comments?? They in no way portrayed the anger and utter absurdity as others who just came on here to call Miley hateful names and insult her family!
February 8th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
I don’t know much about this girl and I get what you people are talking about here.. I just think that for example in fashion shows girls are often dressed up and wear “asian” like make up or even Madonna did that at a time. It just doesn’t feel offensive..
February 8th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
well said, trent!
amen!
February 8th, 2009 at 7:50 pm
Trent - agree with everything you said, 100%.
.
what bothers me the most is how she seems to think if she mentions GOD, it makes her a “good” person and somehow “excuses” her behaviour. that little girl is such a hypocrite, its disgusting the way she casually throws around how “christian” she is to either disguise what she “really does” in the background, or to someone validate her own “goodness.”
.
she’s obviously drunk or high in the photo, although thats no excuse for potentially offending anyone. maybe her parents should stop whoring her out to the media and the world to make a lot of money, and concentrate on parenting and raising their 16 year old daughter properly.
February 9th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
well even if she’s a popstar and all, she’s still a kid. she thinks that way, and not even being a popstar will heighten or lessen her level of sensitivity on issues whatsoever. i cant say that you cant blame her, because when you did something that hurt others, even if you meant it or not, one must still apologize, and that’s what she should know. brats like that dont listen to anyone. and the fact that she’s a popstar, in that aspect it certainly makes it even worse.
