Congratulations are in order for the amazing musician M.I.A. who reportedly gave birth to her first child yesterday! As you may know, a heavily pregs M.I.A. was on hand to do a pretty rigorous musical performance on stage at the Grammy Awards last Sunday evening (which just so happened to be her delivery due date) lookin’ like she was ready to drop that baby at any second. It turns out that, according to “two independent sources” that she has finally done just that … and put into question whether or not she will be able to perform at the Academy Awards next weekend as scheduled:

HitFix has learned from two independent sources that Hip-Hop artist M.I.A., who impressed many across the world by performing while pregnant on Sunday’s Grammy Awards ceremony on her due date, has given birth. HitFix has reached out to Interscope Records for a comment, but has not recieved word at publication date. So, it is unclear whether M.I.A. has delievered boy or a girl, but more importantly: Will she make her scheduled Oscar appearance? Best known for her hit “Paper Planes,” the UK rapper, and singer, who was born Maya Arulpragasam, is an Oscar nominee this year for her collaboration with A.R. Rahman on the “Slumdog Millionaire” Best Original Song nominee “O Saya.” M.I.A. had planned to perform at the ceremony in a mixmash medley that will also feature “Slumdog’s” other nominee, “Jai Ho” and “Down to Earth” from “WALL-E.” “Earth” songwriter Peter Gabriel made news earlier this week by bowing out of the production when he protested the short time his composition was getting in the show. A collective response of: “Who is Peter Gabriel?” was heard from coast to coast from under 30-year-old moviegoers at the announcement. If M.I.A. decides not to perform — and don’t put it past her to try — who will replace her in the show? Crazy ass Lil’ Kim? Missy Elliott, Queen Latifah (also slated to appear during another show segment) or Eve? Could MC Lyte be making a comeback? Or, perhaps the Academy will trek Ms. Dynamite or Lady Sovereign over from the U.K.? Or, maybe underexposed M.I.A. buddy Kayne West will take a shot at it? One thing is for sure, don’t count on double threat and Lonely Island collaborator Natalie Portman. She’s busy.
No other news outlets are reporting this information, except for the LA Times which is citing this report as its source. That being said, it’s prolly very likely that M.I.A. did finally become a M.A.M.A. and give birth. I am dying to know if she had a boy or a girl … and I really cannot wait to find out what she named it. Something tells me that a creative artist like M.I.A. is bound to come up with a name even more interesting that Zuma Nesta Rock or Bronx Mowgli. Stay tuned.
UPDATE: THIS site claims that M.I.A. gave birth to a baby boy on Thursday February 12. No official confirmation or name of the baby has been made available yet.
UPDATE 2: M.I.A. has posted the good news of her baby BOY’s birth on her official My Space profile today. Here is the full text of her announcement:

OHHHHHHHHH I pray this baby has a normal name!!
Congrats!!! I don’t think she will be preforming anytime soon sorry:( but your body NEEDS to regroup so to speak!! I too hope this bebe has a some what normal name..
Congrats to M.I.A!!!
I also hope it has a normal but unique name…I could see her having a real tough, no bs daughter. But I could also see her having a son who is artsy and a total momma’s boy. I think she’ll be a great Mom.
“A collective response of: “Who is Peter Gabriel?” was heard from coast to coast from under 30-year-old moviegoers at the announcement.” – WHAT?? Come on!! Who doesn’t know who Peter Gabriel is?? Damn kids these days..
Lol – I know who peter gabriel is – but i have NO IDEA who this M.I.A is…
I said M.I.A. is coming back with power power!
@ Kendra:
I hear ya, that video for Sledgehammer scared the bejeezus out of me when I was a toddler.
Anyhoo, I’m not at all surprised she didn’t have the kid on her due date, that almost never happens, especially with the first one. I’m more surprised that it arrived so close to her due date.
Great! Now she can get rid of that Koopa Troopa outfit from the Grammy’s!
M.I.A does actually have a normal name. Her real name is Mathangi which is a really common lankan name (coz she’s lankan)..kinda like having the name Jessica in the western world…i think she’ll make a great mom too! congrats to M.I.A!
Zuma is a different name, but Gwen Stefani is naturally unique, so it fits b/c that’s her son. Same with Erika Badu giving her kids names like Seven and Puma; that woman is so unique it goes. I think the same will happen w/ M.I.A.’S child, it’ll probably be a strange name, but given who the mom is’ it’ll fit; these women are very creative and unique. Now Ashley Simpson, oh lord, that girl is just trying waaaay too hard and that name she gavw her child is pathetic. Everything about her seems so forced; she doesn’t strike me as very creative or artistic; she’s a joke.
how are you today
