Jason Mraz, who has been known to dabble in the ways of Mary Jane, has posted a whole slew of new photos in honor of his friend Toca Rivera‘s 53rd birthday showing the pals celebrating his bday by participating in a march for the legalization of marijuana … which is what any good friend would do ;) Here are a few of Jason‘s personal photos from their march to “Free the Weed” and the full text of his latest blogpost explaining what is going on in the photos:

Free The Weed
On February 22nd, my friend Toca Rivera turned 53. For the last ten years of knowing the man, i have always marveled at his youth and his ability to be so mobile and free. In addition to singing along with his beautiful voice, I’ve had the pleasure of laughing with him on millions of occasions, while loving the lie he tells about his age. This year, we say he’s 35. After a most delicious and nutritious macrobiotic lunch in Harajuku, Tokyo, Toca was swept away by perhaps the most perfect parade for his character. If anyone’s birthday wish ever came true so quickly after blowing out his candles, it would be Toca’s. Here’s a look at the rally we quickly became a part of. Enjoy the walk thru Tokyo town. Happy Birthday Brother.
LOVE IT! And what a great birthday for Jason‘s friend Toca. Actually, the randomness of a parade like this coming by right when you wish for it is very reminiscent of the No on Prop 8 protests that were sweeping LA in the weeks following Election Day last November. I was out with friends one Saturday night and we were talking about how upset we were that Prop 8 passed in California and then a protest march came parading down the street! We ran out of the bar we were in and joined the protesters for a little bit. This scenario sounds just like that one. I don’t know Toca Rivera at all but I am glad to know that he had a great birthday with his friend Jason Mraz. Kudos to Jason for so openly advocating a cause he believes in. I have many friends who also champion the same cause. Woot!

Ha I most def have many friends in all walks of life who are in the closet on the above issue!! Ppl you would NEVER think would partake in the green stuff!! I personally think it should be legal its no worse than drinking…just a thought. I don’t smoke it make EVERYTHING too funny lol
yeah we just found out at work who partakes and who doesn’t when they did random drug testing and 8 people were canned…lol I mean when you work for the government you should just know better!
Best post in a long time lol!!!
Blaze it up!!!

*puff puff pass – - pass it over here!!!!
awesome.
Smoking marijuana is not a victimless crime. Many people from my home country who are innocent pay the price of illegally transporting marijuana (their husbands, wives, children, etc. may be drug dealers and they get caught in the violence of the trade). It is NOT cool to smoke marijuana as of right now. By buying it, you are supporting violence in Colombia and other countries. This is why I personally believe marijuana should be legalized, because I don’t think it is that harmful of a drug itself and we should be concentrating our efforts on fighting other more dangerous drugs. But please, when you light up, do think of innocent people who get caught in the middle so that you can light up. I’ve actually seen it happen. Thanks.
That’s quite a blanket statement there, Diana,. Not everyone that smokes weed is smoking stuff from Columbia. I know for a fact that the weed I smoke is grown in my home state.
You’re right, not everyone, but many do. And many don’t know where it comes from. P.S. Colombia, not Columbia : )
Weed should be leagalized and I am glad to know Tish is doing her part to support her local growers (hehe) I follow Tish’s example. :)
Uh…Where was all this support when Phelps got caught smoking weed? Homeboy and his friends were totally demonized by the media, including some spots on this site as well. I support the legalization and fair trade of marijuana, and some states have at least taken the right steps to decriminalize it, but can we try to be a little more consistent with our opinions people? Jason and friends can smoke weed, but Phelps can’t? Musicians are just as influential as athletes, so you can’t pull the ‘kids look up to him’ thing. Huh. How are you going to judge some and not others (and then god forbid, yourselves)? I got real mad a couple weeks ago when everyone attacked M. Phelps because of those photos because I mean, let’s be serious, if you haven’t smoked weed, ya know someone who has, and you know it really isn’t THAT big of a deal. Especially considering all the OTHER terrible things that people are doing all over the world.
@Penny — Clearly, you misread things that I wrote. I have no problem with Phelps smoking whatever he wants. My concern was for the other folks who got arrested when Phelps did not. The folks who “got mad” prolly took issue with an Olympic Gold Medalist who is considered a role model and who is paid millions to endorse family products got caught smoking marijuana which is STILL not legal in this country. Jason Mraz is marching for Phelps right to smoke mj, so you should be happy.
LOLLL love love love it
i cannot wait for the day it’s legal.

I just always think it’s a shame when people’s lives are torn apart and they are forced to pay all kinds of fines and serve time and be on probation and have their famlies messed up… all over some herb… ridiculous!! Alcohol is WAYYY worse!! I’ve NEVER seen someone smoke some weed and then get violent…. but alcohol can make even a docile person get violent.. Yet, Alcohol is viewed as “okay” by most… just because it’s not illegal – unless you’re in a ‘dry county’. By the way, I don’t think it’s illegal to actually SMOKE weed.. just to possess or sell it, or driving while high (dui), right? *sigh* The whole subject irritates me… It’s not like it’s crack… and it just pisses me off that these “strangers” can just DECIDE what they do WANT or DON’T want US to have! BUT – they sure don’t mind if our food or water is contaminated by unnecessary additives!
I thought this was the land of the free…
i just read the stuff on the link provided (for more on the benefits of the legalization of Marijuana) and saw that it is, at least federally, illegal to CONSUME the MJ.. just wanted to correct myself on that..
I love him..I can’t wait to see him in concert in Tulsa!
Are you friggen kidding? Champion a cause he believes in? Pot? Good Grief.
I’m sure Mr. Mraz has plenty of money that he and Michael Phelps can hit on that bong all day, then go out to his avacado ranch and have some guacamole and chips to cure their munchies.
Hey, that sounds fun.
yeah!! Legalize it! Free weed! I’m all for it. Alcohol and tobacco are so much worst, when are we banning those? what? it is a huge source of income? so.. we are not? oh…
FREE WEED!
Oh God I hope they never legalize this stuff. For some reason I cannot STAND how it smells. Worse than cigarette smoke, I swear…
