I am happy to report that my mom’s recovery is coming along very nicely … she’s already left me home alone! Just a few days after her accident, my mom decided that she’s tired of beeing “cooped up” in the house so she asked my dad to take her out … and away they went. I am so happy that my mom is back in fine spirits. Altho the bruises around her eye, jaw and stitches are darkening, she really seems back to her old self — which is a huge relief. I’m really glad I could be home for her right now.
Last night, I spent some time hanging out with Sarah and Mark so that we could eat some pączki (pronounced poonch-ki) and pizza — in that order. For those of you who don’t know what pączkis are, they are Polish jelly-filled donuts that are traditionally eaten around here on Fat Tuesday, right before Lent (which is today, so Happy Lent, y’all!). They are DELICIOUS:

Pączkis are really big here in Detroit, where there is a large Polish population … it’s really a bummer that most people don’t know what they are. For dessert, we ate more pączkis … yes, we’re gross ;)
For the most part, we just hung out and watched TV … nothing special, just fun. Tonight, I’m meeting up with Tracey and Zakiya for a quick bite to eat cuz I’m flying back home to LA tomorrow afternoon. My time here in Detroit is flying by but being able to be with my mom for a few days was totally worth it. Again, thank you all for your very sweet messages of support for my moms. She is very touched that so many people who don’t even know her are sending her good, healing vibes. Thank you all again :)

ahh how awesome that she is feeling much better! ooh and those deserts sound delish!
glad your mom is doing well.
one of my best friends is polish but i have not heard of these. but i do love me some pierogies!!
Glad to hear your Mom is doing good. And those sound delicious I want to try some!!
Mhmm pączki są pyszne (which means pączkis are delicious in Polish). Great, now I’m hungry haha. Thanks for that Trent!
I bet its a bitch typing out that weird a everytime.
oh yummy! I love me some Pączkis.
Boo, no more Paczkis for a whole year :(. I wish every day were Paczki day. I see you went for the glazed. Powdered are the only way to go, imho.
Story to share: Picture it, 5:30 p.m. yesterday. I left the bakery with a box of Paczki. Not being able to wait until I got home, I decided to dig out the custard filled one and start eating in the car. First bite – custard drips down my chin. Bogus. Then I feel someone staring at me! Glance to the right – it’s a lady in her car. I smile (lol, I’ve totally been caught red handed). OMG I end up inhaling some powdered suger as I smiled and choked on the powdery dust! I am coughing, custard on my chin and white poweder flying all inside the car’s interior! I hope that lady laughed her ass off at me, cause I sure did!!! HAPPY LENT
YAY! As a Pole, I love this post :)
Gluttony, thy name is pączki! Oh, how I miss my hometown!
LOOKS LIKE HEAVEN!!!!
What happened to your mom again? At first I thought it was a car accident but then you said “fall”…
OMG ! Im from Poland :D Fat Tuesday is realy crazy, people say if you dont eat some “Pączki’s” you dont have lucky in this year :)
Glad to hear your mom is feeling better. Wanting to leave the house is a good sign. Those paczki’s sure look good. I am so hungy for something like that. I have been thinking of going to Krispy Creme for lunch.
Yay, I’m glad Sarah got her fix!!
Hi.
I’ve been reading your blog for a while now and I just can’t get enough :)
and now I’m thrilled, because you have written something about my country – I mean Poland.
wish you luck!
P.S. Pączkis are really good, although I like your american donuts too :)))
Trent, I agree that it’s unfortunate that not everyone knows about Paczkis. I’m from South Bend, IN and the Polish community is huge in this area. I’m kind of glad they are only around once a year, or I’d be eating them all the time. Plus it just makes them all the more special…
I am Polish (well born in the US but my great-grandparents immigrated here in the early 1900s)! I love Paczki and when I realized today was Ash Weds (totally flaked) I realized I missed Polish Doughnut Day- I am SO bummed!!!
Thanks for the shout out to the yummies!
yay!
now try PIEROGI and U’ll know not only polish sweets, but also great food :)
I think that pączki have the best taste at Fat Thursday ;) this year I ate about four pączki’s
