He knew what he was getting into when he signed the contract. It’s not hard to see the differences in US and EU play, so that shouldn’t have been a shock to him. He knew it and he still signed up. You’re acting like he had no free will in this… he’s a grown man and should respect his fair contract. He’s not even in his prime anymore…

I don’t see him as a sportsman anymore. He’s way too much like his wife for that – does ads, social events, photo shoots… he’s like a socialite. That’s all he’s good at nowadays. I must admit, I don’t really like him anymore.

Thank you Kel, you expressed everything I wanted to say, and very well too.
For the critics out there, it is NOT about the money as some have expressed. Beckham was already a Mega superstar before arriving in USA and his star has become brighter since playing for Milan.

In fact, his reputation dimmed while at the Galaxy because the players expected Beckhan and Donovan to carry the team. Fancy taking such a long break from Soccer. There is no commitment from MLS, unlike Soccer teams from everywhere else in the World.

Beckham is known internationally. There are very few Sports stars recognised outside USA except for Tiger Woods, Magic Johnson, John McEnroe etc. Otherwise, 95% of your so-called sports people would draw blank looks outside USA.

Do not be so quick to criticise Trent, especially as you have most of your so called facts all wrong.
Beckham has already made millions of dollars for Galaxy (it is on record) just through sales of his jumpers and memberships.

Galaxy was practically unknown even within the USA, until David joined them and raised their profile. That kind of advertisement alone, is worth millions.

It’s all about the soccer folks. And the soccer isn’t good in the states, unfortunately. Milan is one of the biggest clubs in the world, and they want him, and he’s doing well there. I can’t blame him for wanting to stay. He should stay. It’s not about his looks, or his lifestyle… it’s about the soccer–his passion and career. Outside this gossip world, is the world of sport, of soccer, and anyone who is serious about the game knows that Becks and his lawyers should try their hardest to get out of that (ridiculous) contact and play for a real team. Playing in the states will not afford him the chance to make the England world cup squad. The World Cup. Bigger than the SuperBowl, the “World” Series, and any major sporting event in the US COMBINED! Good luck Becks. I hope it works out. Forza Milan!

Seriously Trent, please find out about how this all works before writing about it.

Everyone knows, the LA Galaxy thing was hardly for playing football, it was for bringing newsiness and prestige to a game that Americans know nuts about, but boy do you lot love a celebrity. And why not capitalise on that in a country that thrives on gossip and celebrity?

Now that that has happened, you can’t expect a world class player to seriously continue to play, seriously rubbish football. They guy needs to get his game on seriously, before his playing days are over.

It’s all a game, and it’s all written into his contract no doubt about it. Also, players are often traded between teams. It’s not a big deal, and really, means nothing at all in the grand scheme of things. If he chooses AC Milan, he’s only chosen one of the greatest football clubs in the history of football. Kudos to him,

You guys will only miss his bod, underwear, and looks.: which proves a point or two.

Not to be rude or disrespectful but does anybody have any clue about the history of AC Milan, this club has been around before 1900. It is one of the best clubs in Europe with such a rich history. I do not blame DB at all. It is way more prestigious than playing in MLS in the states.

I think it’s hard on his kids being dragged around the world to different schools all the time, yes I know they are worth millions, but they are still kids who have to survive at school and make new friends each time. I think it’s selfish when sports stars put their careers before their families, and its not like they need the money.

This happens in sports all the time, nothing new. Players sign for teams and promise the world and they either move for a better deal or the team cuts them to save money and buy better players.

Seriously, do you actually think him seeing out his contract will grow soccer in the US? He’ll serve the game better playing at the highest level with the best players.

Yes it’s a little disappointing but I understand that there is no way he will be happy back in the MLS now that he has tasted the highest level of the game again. It’s not about Hollywood or the money, he wants to be part of the World Cup team and he will not be picked if he’s not playing in Europe. Why should he be miserable in the MLS when he can be working to get on the England team?

It’s more likely that the LA Galaxy made more money off him than they paid him Trent and their part of the deal was most certainly NOT $250 million.

Umm, did you actually see any of his last few months at Madrid? He was quite possibly the main reason they actually won La Liga at the end of that season. He got dropped by Capello (then Real’s manager) because he’d signed a contract with LA which to Capello meant he wasn’t committed to the Real cause…his dedication & hard work in training etc, even when told he’d never play again for Capello again, changed Capello’s mind & he played him for the last few months of that season & he played extremely well (perhaps the best he’d done in Spain).

Football contracts are not absolute ties to a club (just look at the Ronaldo saga between Real & Man Utd or the recent almost selling of Kaka to Man City from Milan.) So long as the dealing is between the two clubs & are open about it & agree on fees & compensation with regards to remaining time on a contract & the worth of the player etc then it’s all ok & happens all the time in football. LA would be well advised to sell him now when they can get some money rather than wait til he enacts some clause in his contract to go for free or goes on the Bosman ruling (that rule being that he goes for free too.) Players, not the clubs, are very well protected by the rules of the game when it comes to contracts & moving clubs when under contract.

I think it’s really sad how soccer isn’t popular in the US when it’s popular… everywhere else in the world. My mother played for 11 years when she was younger, and my brother and I enjoy and play the game both on teams and for fun… as well as watching.

As for Becks, I cannot blame him, the US would rather watch… the super bowl then the world cup. *sigh*

my guess is that he realized the huge difference between sports in the US and Europe, especially in terms of football (sorry – soccer) and being back in europe made him realize that playing with a european team is just more comfortable for him

I personally saw this coming, unforuinitly football is just not as big in the U.s. and Canada. (to my dismay) The fact is, he has and will do better in Eurpoe. That said, I think he made his bed and should lie in it. He had to know that football was not a big sport in the U.S. He made a commitment to a team and he should honor that commitment!
I hope one day he will be back to a European team, where his talent can be appreciated! Also, hopfully one day football will be relized as THE BEST SPORT KNOW TO MAN! Even here!
