‘Be Careful What You Wish For’

Last night, David and I met up to double-date with Steph and Alek at the ArcLight Theater in Hollywood, CA. We decided to do dinner and a movie (but in reverse order) and Coraline was our film of choice:

Let me be expressly clear — Coraline is AMAZING! Henry Selnick, the director of A Nightmare Before Xmas, has taken Neil Gaiman’s wildly imaginative book and turned it into a visual masterpiece. In 3D, the film is just … stunning. I have to mention that there are A LOT of Detroit area mentions in the film … I do not recall these mentions in the original book so I suspect it was Selnick who decided to include them. Coraline’s family hails from Pontiac, MI. Coraline’s father wears a sweatshirt from Michigan State University. And a snow globe from the Detroit Zoo is featured prominently in the storyline. Additionally, Coraline’s mother’s car is a silver VW Bettle (exactly like mine) and the family lives in a home called the Pink Palace … uh, something tells me that this movie has been catered to me personally ;) But … I digress. This movie is one of those films that reminds you what movies should be all about … magic and wonder that is capable of whisking you away to another world. There are so many amazing little nuggets of inventiveness in this film, I cannot express how much I want each and every one of you to see it. Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors and I am just so happy that one of his stories has been brought to life in this way … see this film! You must. Do try to see it in 3D (I understand that only 40% of the theaters in the country are showing it in 3D) as it will make the magic even more believable.

I should mention that we ran into Anne Hathaway and her new boyfriend double dating with John Krasinski and Emily Blunt at the theater last night. They were in line behind us for popcorn and then sat a couple rows in front of us inside the theater. They all looked so great … but we opted out of bothering them. We were much too bizzy having our own fun:

After the movie, we made our way to Birds on Fairfax for dinner and then decided to call it a night. It was rainy and chilly out so … we decided to end the night there.

This afternoon, David and I are gonna get out and enjoy some of the sunshine that has finally returned to SoCal … it’s still a bit chilly (in the high 50s) but the sun has returned. Huzzah!!

If Neil Gaiman is one of your favourite stories, you’ll love this story about what a great guy is his too, Trent. A friend of mine from university has a friend at home who loves Gaiman’s books, and was unfortunately hit by a car a couple of days before she was going to go to a signing he was doing in Manchester (England). Her friends went along with some books for Neil to sign as a surprise for her, and told him what happened… her name, hospital etc. The next day, Neil Gaiman actually showed up at the hospital she was in and sat and talked and read some of his stuff to her for a good couple of hours. How great of him is that! Went totally out of his way to cheer a fan up.

    Hi Trent,

Just wanted to make a comment about your 50 degree weather. I live in Michigan, currently working in Detroit for the Tigers…and as I was coming out of work on Friday, everyone was excited that it was 30 degrees. And the sad thing is, today it’s 40-ish and I went outside without a coat acting like it was spring time!! :)

I would LOVE some 50 degree weather right about now!

  10. Liz Says:

  16. Lindy Says:

My daughter and I saw Coraline last night and once we got home with her tucked safely in bed, her final words for the evening weren’t prayers but rather, “You know Mom, it’s gonna make me really mad if I wake up with buttons on my eyes.”

  17. Kelly Says:

I saw this movie with my daughter on Friday night. It was amazing. It was better than I thought it would be and in fact, I’m so tempted to go back again. The word my daughter used for the 3D was “trippy.” From the mouth of a 7 year old. lol We even went to the Coraline website and they have a spot where you can add buttons to pictures you have. I took a picture of my daughter and added buttons. It was too great.

  18. Bubblegum Says:

I saw this this weekend and I LOVED it. We couldn’t see it in the theater, because my boyfriend has monocular vision and can’t process 3D images. How crazy is that!
