Paula Abdul Releases A New Song Titled ‘Boombox’
Pink reader Bat gave me the head’s up that Paula Abdul’s official website is currently streaming a new song that appears to be the first single from her upcoming new album which is due out in Summer ‘09. The song is titled Boombox … which is curious, because Kylie Minogue just released a remix album titled Boombox and, wouldn’t you know it, features the very same song on the disc:

Head on over to PaulaAbdul.com to hear a short snippet of the track, which was also previewed on Paula’s MTV cheerleader competition show Rah! which aired on MTV yesterday. Click HERE to hear one of Kylie’s remixed versions of the track. Kylie’s Boombox is released in OZ this week and will be released here in the US on the 27th … Paula’s won’t come until the summer. While I am very excited that Paula is about to release a new album, I’m not really sure why she needs to release songs that have already been recorded and released by other more successful artists … or mebbe I just answered my own question.

Career wise both Paula and Kylie have sold about the same number of records. Paula had way more success in the USA though, Kylie is hardly known here. No one will even know this was a Kylie Minogue ditty.
As a side note, Paula even wrote Kylie’s “comeback” song “Spinning Around”. So I don’t see any problem with Paula getting something back from Kylie who will never be popular in the USA anyway (she doesn’t make USA radio friendly music).

@Bat – Kylie Minogue is bigger than even Madonna in much of the world, the US market is the only market that doesn’t get Kylie. I’m not sure about the two of them selling the same number of records … Kylie has released 10 albums in the past 20 years, Paula only released 3 proper albums. Regarding ‘Spinning Around’, Paula was one of 5 writers of the song so it’s not entirely correct to say that she wrote Kylie’s song. That being said, I wholly support Paula releasing new music and I hope she gets a hit again … ‘All I Wanna Do Is Dance’ was an OK song, I’m bummed it didn’t do better here in the US … or anywhere, for that matter.

Kylies version is a MESS. it is Horrible. Paulas version is sooo much better. It is a theme song for her cheer show.

Paulas last song was actually nr 1 in several Asian countries! Obviously the US media totally missed that. But it did extremely well over in Asia.

I prefer Paula’s version
January 4th, 2009 at 9:32 am
Kylie did it better.

Paula was one of 4 writers on “Spinning Around”, not 5: Writers: ABDUL PAULA J, BINGHAM OSBORNE GOULD JR, DIOGUARDI KARA E, SCHICKMAN IRA STEVEN. Paula Abdul has sold over 50 million records worldwide, Kylie has sold 60 million. Paula obviously did that with less material. Paula is also ranked #5 for solo female artists with the most number one hits in the USA. As for “Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow”, it hit #2 on the USA Dance charts and the video was #1 for weeks on iTunes. I don’t have anything against Kylie, but Kylie didn’t even write “Boombox” so she has no control over who else can record it. People in other countries have recorded versions of it as well, so it isn’t only Paula Abdul covering the song.

@Bat – But really, Paula is only known these days for the gaffes she makes on ‘American Idol’ and the questionable appearances she makes on television shows rather than her music … while Kylie continues to sell out arenas the world over year after year (her KylieX2008 Tour is still rolling on). It’s not about comparing them, they’re really apples and oranges.

I love Paula’s version of the song. It’s going to be a great hit here in the states. Kylie has the eurotrash sound going which is why she’s not big here. Nothing against her, and I hope she continues to do well.
I’m sure the writers of the song are more than happy to have Paula sing it. Because in actuality they own the song, not Kylie or Paula.

To be honest, I think there’s a reason why Americans have at least heard of Kylie yet this Paula is far from a known name in the UK or mainland Europe. I think I know her from being a stand-in on X-Factor but she was pretty much just a joke. As is this recording.

Two points for Trent. Paul Abdul ain’t good, y’all.
January 4th, 2009 at 10:26 am
Or Paula, even.
January 4th, 2009 at 11:38 am
First…on both accounts it’s not really the greatest song in the world. At least with Paula’s I can seem myself jamm’n with it if it comes on the radio. The Kylie version sounds like it’s coming out of a broken boombox.
January 4th, 2009 at 11:58 am
You people are thick as mud. The version trent linked was a (keyword) REMIX of the song Boombox by Kylie, not the original version. The original version never leaked, and clearly was sold to Paula Abdul to have a non-hit with it. I have no idea why you are comparing the two.

Kylie is a gorgeous and talented artist, but I just don’t care for her.
I have always been a huge Paula fan and I really hope she returns. GO PAULA!
January 4th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
Trent compared them in the blog post, thus the arguments folded out afterwards :). Paula Abdul has had so many hats during her career that you can’t just call her a “tv personality”. She has been in the public eye now for 20 years. You can’t erase her previous accomplishments in the music world either. 50+ million records sold. 6 number one singles. Rush Rush was one of the longest running #1s of the 90s (5 weeks). As for Kylie — no one is denying she has a successful career. However, her career is non-existent for the most part in the USA. So, coming from a USA perspective, people will say “Who?” to Kylie but they know who Paula Abdul is. From other posts I’m seeing elsewhere people seem to be taking it out on Paula that Kylie is a flop in the USA outside a few minor hits. Not Paula’s fault. And again, since Kylie did not write Boombox, she has absolutely no control over who can record it.

@trent, bat, and all – get your facts straight. We’re all fans of these women, but let’s not spin facts to fit agendas. Here are links to each ladies singles sales all over the world. Madonna is the clear the winner – by HUGE leads – the world over. To note: Kylie’s had 20 top 10 hits in her native Australia, and Madonna’s had 40, double. In the UK, Kylie’s had 31 top 10 hits to Madonna’s whopping 62, double. And in the US, Kylie has 2 top 10 to Madonna’s 37. And if you look at both charts you see Madonna has her beat in EVERY country. Yes, Madonna has a 4 year jump (83 vs 87) on Kylie, but that’s not that huge. As for Paula, while her sales are no where’s near the other two, she can boast she had 3 #1 singles off her debut album (as can Kylie in her homeland of Australia), but Paula continued to dominate with her next album with 2 more #1s (she would have had 6 consecutive #1s, but “Its Just the Way that you Love me” peaked at #3, still a great #). And “Rush Rush” was #1 for 5 weeks, but Madonna’s “Take a Bow” was #1 for 7 weeks, her longest run at #1. Please, please you guys – we all love our pop ladies, but do your homework first before throwing out stats, ok?

You can’t really compare being popular in the UK and Australia with being popular in the US.
The UK and Australia have a combined population of 80+ million
The USA has a population of 301+million.
No young international artist dreams of making it big in Australia, They all want to make it in the US of A.
Let’s keep our facts straight as you say.

let paula have the song. it really wont do anything for her anyway. i am a huge kylie fan (i am a gay australian) and, quite frankly, the song wont do anything for her either. yes i know she had a big tour, but ms minogue better do something quick with her career or shell end up as the trashy 4th judge on australian idol!!! and i really do not want that for her.
January 5th, 2009 at 9:55 am
love that photo of Paula!
January 5th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
that’s not the right version of boombox that kylie is singing. On the boombox album. It’s the LA Riots one. Paula has the same beats and lyrics. Personally I like Kylie’s much better. She did an amazing job with it on the X tour. It doesn’t matter who had the song first all that matters is who gets it selling first.

LUV IT PAULA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
January 5th, 2009 at 6:37 pm
@Bev – see you got it, amen! you know how to talk with facts. that’s what i’m talking about. good job!
January 8th, 2009 at 11:49 am
@JZ — Paula had 4 number ones on her first album (Straight Up, Forever Your Girl, Cold Hearted, and Opposites Attract), not 3. I think you just mistakenly missed one there :) All my homework was done, I cited their record sales and how their singles did in the USA. Like Bev mentioned, it isn’t the same having X number of #1s in one country vs another. Anywho, I never said any of them were not talented. I don’t like the remix of Boombox by Kylie. I also don’t like some Paula Abdul songs. I do, however, happen to enjoy her version of Boombox. Maybe she will get another hit, maybe she won’t. Only time will tell on that one.
January 26th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
I may be wrong but I thought Paula Abdul wrote boombox and it’s her song and so she is releasing it. I thought Paula wrote 5 songs for Kylie and 2 of them are Spinning Around and Boombox. Also, it is my understanding that Paula wrote the lyrics on Spinning Around and the other 3 wrote the words – so it really is Paula’s song. Anyway’s I am a huge fan of Kylie and Paula but I like Paula more because she is my favorite artist besides Stevie Nicks. I hope Boombox is a hit for Paula, either way I love the song and think it sounds a lot better then Kylie’s version. I love a lot of Kylie’s other songs though, like WOW is really good.
January 26th, 2009 at 6:55 pm
Whoops, I meant to say Paula wrote the lyrics (words) on Spinning Around and the other 3 wrote the music. Ok, I am tired!! Go Paula and Go Kylie!

I’m not commenting on who is huge in what part of the world. The discussion is hilarious.
The song Spinning Around was written by Ira Shickman, Osborne Bingham, Kara DioGuardi and Paula Abdul for Paulas comeback album that never was. Minogues team travelled to the US to look for a good song and they found it. It was given to Minogue.
The song Boomboox was written by Jimmy Harry, Danielle Brisboise, Andrew Frampton and Spike Stent. The first artist to record it was Kylie Minogue for her album X. The song was released though but remixes were. Meanwhile other European and Asian artists like Coco Lee and Roni recorded the song and released it. Boombox is a good song. That’s why they put it on Minogues REMIX album named Boombox. Now Paula Abdul recorded and releases a song that was already made known by three female artists. So what? … and all ORIGINAL versions sound just like the first, the Minogue version. :)
January 31st, 2009 at 7:19 am
Sorry:
The song WASN’T released though but remixes were … meaning the first version of Boombox.
May 5th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
it is just a fact Minogues do it better!
