Patrick Swayze Has Been Hospitalized for Pneumonia

The actor's failing health takes another hit
January 9th, 2009

Sad news to report this afternoon … A&E president Robert DeBitetto announced at a press panel today that Patrick Swayze, who has been courageously and successfully battling cancer in the past half year, has been admitted to the hospital after coming down with a bout of pneumonia:

Patrick Swayze has been hospitalized for pneumonia, the president of A&E announced at a panel Friday. “Patrick has asked that I tell you that he has checked himself into the hospital this morning for observation after coming down with pneumonia,” said A&E president and general manager Robert DeBitetto. “As anyone who has had a friend or family member that has undergone treatment for cancer, chemotherapy can take a toll on you immune system. Patrick did want me to tell you that he is very sorry he couldn’t be at panel this morning, but he plans to get back to promoting The Beast as soon as he is back on his feet.” In a ABC primetime special Wednesday, Swayze, 56, denied that he was on his deathbed but said he may have only two years to live. “I’d say five years is pretty wishful thinking,” said the actor, whose A&E series The Beast premieres next week. “Two years seems likely if you’re going to believe statistics. I want to last until they find a cure, which means I’d better get a fire under it.” Last year, the actor revealed he had Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. “Yeah, I’m scared. Yeah, I’m angry. Yeah, I’m [asking] why me,” he said. “Yeah, I’m all this stuff. You can bet that I’m going through hell,” he said. “And I’ve only seen the beginning of it.”

Patrick Swayze has already beat the odds and it looks as if he is showing no signs that he is giving up the fight. While this latest hospitalization is a bit scary, I’m sure he can find the fortitude to fight off this illness and get back on his feet. I urge y’all to send all your thoughts and prayers out to Patrick Swayze in the hopes of a speedy recovery.

He is the bravest man I have ever seen. I had been praying for him and now this. But God is able and I know that with the faith this man has, he will pull through.

Not to sound negative but that is how my uncle died. He defeated cancer then 2 months later died of pneumonia in the hospital. His immune system just couldn’t take it. I hope that Patrick gets through this!

It must take a lot of courage to tell the whole world about your illness and be infront of the camera day in and day out. His attitude is positive which is awesome, but being stage 4 could cause a lot of suffering :( my best wishes go out to Patrick and his family!

  6. Traci Says:

Brittany is right, this is really, really bad. His immune system is probably nonexistent at this point. I hope he gets better, but it doesn’t look good. =(

He is the hammiest actor around, but I think he’s a terrific human being. I recently saw an interview with his wife by Barbara Walters and was glad to learn that he is going to fight this all the way. I myself am just getting over a bout of pneumonia and I’m a healthy person! I can only imagine how he must be feeling with no immunity at all. My thoughts and prayers are with him and Lisa.

This poor man! Gosh how this sucks. I hope he can fight this!

Sorry to say it… but he’s a goner. He should have quit smoking to avoid this kind of complication. Your immune system is already in the dumps to keep depleting it with cigarettes is just not the right thing to do.

Chemo can definitely knock the socks off you….and the effect it has on your immune system is pretty scary….I had cancer two years ago and the effects are pretty long lasting. My prayers go out to Patrick and his family. Stay strong, keep the support around you, and you can get through anything.

  13. perry Says:

is it tru he continues to smoke
    ciggys ????
    how horrid.

  14. Joanne Says:

Yep – I will never understand how people put themselves through treatments to save their life – but continue to smoke?!?!!

  15. kay Says:

    Patrick is in my prayers.

  16. Elaine Says:

I love Patrick lots and I pray for the best outcome for him. I am upset with him though that he does continue to smoke. I would think that he would take this opportunity in the position he’s in as a actor and someone everyone knows to encourage people and to be a role model in this time of his life. I guess he figures he doesn’t have much time why give up the vice he enjoys, but why would you make things more complicated for yourself by doing things like that. I guess we will never know.
