Les Beckhams: The Musical
The play's the thing

Just when you thought David and Victoria Beckham have infiltrated every nook and cranny of pop culture comes news that the pair are central figures in a new musical production called MacBecks, which is set to open at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin, Ireland tonight. Earlier today we saw the first images from Vicki B‘s new Armani Underwear ad campaign but this new musical theater incarnation of Les Beckhams has to take the cake. Here are a few pics from the show along with a description of this new work of genius art:

Of all the places in Europe you might expect a stage show about David and Victoria Beckham to open, Dublin would be one of the last. Yet it seems the Irish are just as fascinated by the Posh and Becks story as the English, Spanish, Italians and even the Americans. Opening tonight at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre is a production which plays on David Beckham’s “Shakespearean qualities” of fashion, comedy and footballing tragedy. Filled with missed penalties, flying boots and dodgy haircuts, it’s called MacBecks and is based loosely – very loosely – on the Scottish play. With lines like “Is this a stiletto I see before me?”, it is unlikely to attract Shakespearean purists. But it was only a matter of time before the story of the Beckhams was turned into a stage play. Their relationship has been one of the great celebrity romances of our time, and there is no shortage of material in a theatrical cocktail of sex, soccer and singing. One of the writers, Malachy McKenna, says the Irish have closely followed the tabloid lives of the Beckhams. “Everybody does. If you go out into Dublin and buy 50 magazines, they are going to be in 40 of them. They are a global phenomenon.” It is not quite Romeo and Juliet, but the writer says the Beckhams should be applauded for staying together in the face of adversity. “They are a testament to the love story. They get media attention every day and they’re still together. That’s the thing we should remember.” So is this play really a positive portrayal of David Beckham and his wife? The Dublin actor who plays the former Manchester United star insists it is. Paul Reid says the aim of the production is not to bury Beckham, but to praise him. “People think he’s really dumb but he’s not at all. He couldn’t be with that much money and that much success. He comes out really well,” insists Reid. The actor has a guilty secret – he is a Liverpool fan, but is adamant that it does not affect his performance. He does seem to deliver David’s dim-witted lines with some relish, embracing Posh and tells her “the world is our ostrich”. In real life, 33-year-old Beckham is having the last laugh as he keeps proving the critics wrong. His recent move to AC Milan is going better than expected, and his dream of becoming England’s most capped player and playing in next year’s World Cup in South Africa is still alive. At the same time, he will remain fertile territory for comedians, columnists and tabloid editors. Others involved in his life from Sir Alex Ferguson to Wayne Rooney, Sven Goran Eriksson to his former personal assistant Rebecca Loos have also attracted attention. Not surprisingly, all of them feature as characters in MacBecks. The Beckhams have been invited to Dublin to see the show. They have yet to reply. Theatre-goers attending the opening performance are being issued with the warning: “This show contains scenes of spice, sport, sex, celebrity and some mild soccer.” Ticket sales are going well in Dublin, but the real test of the play will be whether it earns an international transfer.

With all due respect and apologies to the genius of William Shakespeare, I absolutely love the idea of this show! The more you think about Posh and Becks and the many supporting characters that could be utilized in the musical tale of their love … the more genius the whole thing becomes. After the jump, check out a photo of Vicki B. posing with the Spice Witches, who feature heavily in the show …

OMG, I love it! If you happen to be in Dublin you can click HERE to get tickets to see this show … I can only PRAY that it will make its way to our sunny shores one day. I’d love to see this show, even if it sucks … I’d still go :) Click HERE to watch a clip of Posh and Becks signing a portion of one of the show’s musical numbers. It’s a ballad it’s not that exciting … even still, it’ll give you a pretty good feel for what the show has in store. How many of y’all would pony up to see this show if it came to your town?

While I haven’t seen it and therefore can’t comment on whether or not it’s any good, it’s not exactly a stupid idea. It actually takes a great deal of talent to adapt an existing work into something more modern, or more satirical, or with musical numbers.

um, contest idea??? haha jk. if only it were slightly more practical…

I’m still trying to understand why those two are so huge. David is obviously a hottie hotster and Vicki…um has interesting fashion choices and was the least talented of the the Spice Girls.
It just seems like they are trying too hard to prove something when they leave the house looking like they’re going to fashion week when they are actually going to the supermarket.
I don’t get it. Plus I think it’s a bit of a stretch saying they are a testament to the love story. How long have those two been together? How many Laker girls has Becks ogled?

It would be nice to see a celebrity couple stay together and have it be for keeps, but then again I also thought Ryan and Reese would be together forever. Maybe they needed a musical too…..

Hey, something in my neck of the woods! Though I’m not a fan of Posh and Becks, I love the Olympia, they’re good for putting on really cheesy acts xD I’ll definitely see qhat the reviews are like and might take a gander!

I got one question: is this going to be on the road? I gotta hear reviews of this.

This is so stupid. Poor Shakespeare.

I remember watching an interview with them years and years ago when they first got together. They should have called them Dumb and Dumber. Neither sounded very educated..of course this hasn’t stopped them from making squillions. I guess they must have good business managers, because there’s no way they’d have the nous for business deals. I’ve got nothing against them, but I really don’t understand why they’re so huge. She can’t sing and he’s just a so so soccer player who gets injured all of the time.

Reason the play is in Dublin is because that’s where Posh and Becks got married!!

    Sounds pretty funny
