‘Dollhouse’ Party
The TV Guide

Last night I met up with Darion and Kirsten for a dinner and TV night extravaganza that we’d been planning for a few days now … because of a couple of delays had to reschedule but finally got our act together yesterday. We originally planned on dining at Houston’s in Century City but because they wouldn’t seat us because I was wearing a hat (a very cool hat, not a ball cap, not a knit cap) we told them to eff off and we went over to enjoy a delicious meal at Rock Sugar. I’m so over pretentious places with their stupid dress codes … especially restaurants in the mall! I like the sushi at Houston’s but their bullshit rules are pretty insufferable … I doubt I’ll ever eat there again. Rock Sugar, on the other hand, is always a good time, great atmosphere and fab food. We had a great time there last night.

After dinner, we made our way to Darion’s to watch the premiere episode of the new Joss Whedon TV series Dollhouse which stars Buffy/Angel alum Eliza Dushku as the mysterious Echo:

My quick, knee-jerk review of the series is that Dollhouse is Joss‘s version of Alias. Echo is an “active” (among many) who has been stripped of her personality gets imprinted with various other personalities in order for her to take on missions (called engagements) for wealthy clients. The series taps into the notion that Echo and the other actives can be anyone at all … except for their real selves. The series also stars Tahmoh Penikett who plays Helo in the new Battlestar Gallactica as well as Amy Acker, who played Fred on Angel. The inclusion of these two actors really makes the show more appealing to me overall. I’m most intrigued by Amy‘s character … she works for the organization that runs the Dollhouse and you deffo get the feeling that there is much more to her character make up (especially when you see what she looks like). The premiere episode is a bit complicated as they try to explain a lot in a short time. There isn’t a lot of POW! excitement to start but I felt the ep ended on a very thrilling note. There are so many clues and little things thrown into the ep that I am really dying to see more. I really hope this series will do well on FOX when it premieres on Feb. 13. A Friday night time slot is difficult to make successful (just ask Lipstick Jungle) but since Dollhouse will be paired with Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, I think it’ll have a better chance at survival. There is so much potential in this series. Granted, I’ve only been able to watch one ep, Joss is an amazing storyteller and the writing it just superb. I will deffo be watching Dollhouse from day one … I only hope a lot more folks will be joining me by tuning in to FOX in the coming Friday nights.

Tonight I’m meeting up with my friend David who I haven’t seen in eons … it’ll be nice to catch him up on what’s been going on with me. Another 80+ day here in SoCal … fun in the sun, y’all!!

I am dying to see this show. All of the write-ups I’ve seen so far have been thumbs-up with a suggestion that viewers have patience and allow the storyline to unfold. I love Joss Whedon…I’m such a dork.

  6. Calgirl says:

Houston’s is a nightmare. They can only seat 6 ppl, no large parties, stupid dress code and they don’t serve Captain Morgans. I too shall never eat there again!

  7. Tanya says:

I’m so over pretentious places (and people) too. Kudos to you for sticking to your guns. The fact that they turned you away is absolutely ridiculous!!

    GO ROCK SUGAR! :)

  8. Krissy says:

    I <3 you for referencing my dearly-departed Alias… *sigh*

How the H-E- double hockey sticks did you get a copy of the Dollhouse premiere? That’s not fair! I wanna see it!

I HATE Houston’s!! I live here in Orange County and there is a Houston’s in Irvine, they are horrible! 1) they don’t take reservations, 2) they take forever and ever to seat you 3) there service really sucks and they take forever to serve your food 4) the people that work there are super super rude! I hate them so much I can’t even tell you! I’m sorry for your bad experiance, but I’m glad to know it’s not just me!

  11. Anna says:

I just hope Fox doesn’t screw over Joss Whedon again like they did with Firefly with the scheduling. Joss vowed that he would never work with Fox again and then he accidentally got into this. I just hope it works.

  12. Melissa says:

Have you seen Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horribles Sing-a-long blog. If you have not, most definitely check it out. Its in 3 parts and can be purchased on dvd or from itunes.

  13. Sara says:

I can’t wait! I (sadly) usually end up at home on Friday nights because my husband works and I work really early on Saturday mornings. So for me, it’s a good night to watch! I loved Buffy, Angel, Firefly (All Joss) Tru Calling (I miss Eliza) and Alias (Because it rocked) so I’m SUPER excited!

And btw, you should be able to wear a nice hat if you want to and I’m pretty sure that they just lost more business than just you two. :) Their loss!

  14. Sarah says:

I made the mistake of dismissing Firefly and then found out too late what an awesome show it was. I will not make the same mistake. Big fan of Joss Whedon and I will make Fridays work for me. But I have doubts…stupid Fox cancels too many good shows.

  15. Jen says:

    It’s Helo, not Helio. ;)

  16. Boris says:

My now-husband and I went to that very same Houston’s on one of our first dates. I was NOT thrilled with them either. I would’ve LOOOOOOVED to tell them to kiss my ass. =)

  17. Suzy says:

I see why you don’t miss the midwest…today in indianapolis it’s -7 degrees.

  18. Sean says:

Maybe if you had any manners, you would know it’s proper to not where a hat at dinner at ANY restaurant. Course nowadays it’s very conceivable that your mother never taught you such a basic level of respect.
