Disney Shows Off Its First Black Princess
Walt Disney Pictures released a new promo photo from their upcoming new animated film The Princess and the Frog which features the studio’s first ever Black princess character. On a day like today, when the US welcomes its first African American President, I think it’s fitting to feature Princess Tiana in this new promo pic from Disney’s upcoming film The Princess and the Frog:
The film, formerly titled The Frog Princess, is scheduled to open in theaters on Xmas Day this year. It will be the 49th 2D animated film from Walt Disney Animation and the first made since 2004 (Home on the Rage was the studio’s last 2D animated film).
Set in New Orleans, LA, The Princess and the Frog features the voices of Anika Noni Rose (as Princess Tiana), Oprah Winfrey, Keith David, John Goodman, Jenifer Lewis and more. I am really looking forward to this new 2D animated film. As much as I love the Pixar animated films, I really miss the magic of traditional animation. A lot of folks have waited a long time for this movie to come out … I can’t wait!

@Everyone — SOOO right, the point should’ve been that Princess Tiana is the first Black princess not that Disney hasn’t featured racial diversity in their animated films. I’ve removed that entire part out of the post. Apologies and thanks for the reminders :)

I used to love The Frog Prince story as a child (waaaay back in the 60’s. lol) It was such a good story. I don’t normally do the animated flicks, but I just might take this one in.

I have been waiting forever for this movie. FOREVER!! Ty Trent for posting this. I was an animation major until just a couple years ago because I love 2D animation. I can’t wait to see what this will be like.

This will be nice. Of course, as everyone mentioned, there have been other races featured before, but I think it will be good to add her in for all the little African American girls who like to dress up like their favorite princess. I’m half black and Jasmine was pretty much the closest I got to my tan skin. I hope she has curly hair because mine certainly is, and if I have daughters it would be nice for them to have a princess to relate to as far as looks.

I LOVE that they are making another traditional, hand-drawn animated movie. They are just too beautiful, as that promo pic shows.

This film has been in the works for a long while if I’m not mistaken, even before Jolie made that comment, although it is absurd to think one statement from Angelina Jolie will push Disney to create a film and it is also absurd to downplay what a big deal this is for black girls in America who may feel that Disney did not deem their race beautiful enough to create a black Princess…..until now.

I’m so excited. I’ve been looking forward to a 2D princess movie for years! They never should have stopped making them. I predict it it will be a huge success :)
Also, they’ve brought the pretty look back. Even in some of their 2Ds after the princess phase it was in a weird aesthetic. I love this classic look, it makes me so happy!

i dont know, it may be the picture, but i aint feeling the dress, it seems to me they where trying to create another classic “look” just like the rest of the other princess´ have , but this one doesnt seem to have that “disney princess” look. she looks too average, like any studio could have done it, like thumbellina and anastacia back in the day. but well have to whait and see the final product.

This movie has been surrounded with so much unnecessary controversy.
There were so many people whining about how the princess is such a stereotype, because she’s black and from a poor family in New Orleans… and then there was that name change because “Frog Princess” was considered offensive (especially because Tiana is black, I fail to see the connection but maybe that’s just me)
Seriously, people? I’m all for some degree of political correctness but things have been blown way out of proportion. I’m sick of it, and it has very much lessened my anticipation for the movie. Such a shame. =(

i was watching the lion king the other day and boy! i really missed the times of 2D animation! i cannot wait for this and hope there’ll be fantastic original music to accompany this movie like all the traditional disney movies.

Wow, don’t mean to get Ugly, but um, Disney has been a pretty racist and biased institution.
You can name any non-pixar movie and I could tell you some way they are gender discriminatory, racist, etc. Any Disney movie.
I think its about damn time there was a Black princess. Young girls have less and less media to relate to that is like themselves so much to the point that young black girls choose white baby dolls over black ones and try to bleach their skin because they think its “prettier”.
Princess Jasmine: Was property to her father and had no rights to her marriage. Then became property of Aladdin. Total gender bias. Has a english white accent instead of the strong Arabic accents of the thieves. Bad = Arabic, Good= White English
Pochahontas: Tried to portray the real story of the settlement of America by her falling in love with a white man with blonde hair. When in reality, the white settlers robbed the native americans of their food and land and squanto spoke just as good if not better English than the white settlers due to his education when he was taken to Europe multiple times.
Yes this news is awesome, but it looks like there are many people who aren’t fully aware of Disneys biases!

To Ms. Jessica I really have do disagree with you that disney is racist first of all Disney is the only company that recognized gay partners to have full benefits and they implemented this policy in the early 90’s They gave equal job opportunities to minorities not only white. Great examples were the voice of Lea Salonga, Christina Aguilare, Vanessa Williams and more. Regarding the characters of Princess Jasmine as property. FIrst of all the plot was hundred years ago when women all over the world were identified as PROPERTY like cattle and if you want to see prejudice read the bible. In the King James version that slavery is Gods will, and daughters can be sold like property. Another thing in saudi arabia women are not even allowed to drive, wear an blanket when out in public. I think the problem is we live in a world of POLITICAL CORRECTNESS that even hollywood and Disney are victims of this mentality that most of the tv shows, movies adopted to this political correctness. A great example was the wild wild west the movie that was done by Wil Smith, that James West character was a white dude in the original tv series, which they change to an african american I have to problem with that, but that the president of the united states of america will appoint a black man as marshall during the 1800’s???? I think that’s why the movie failed. The are thinking of replacing James Bond to be a black woman, or changing spiderman, Captain America, Superman, Batman to be all black characters. And even some were complaining why in the movies Lord of the rings and Narnia how come they don’t have any black actors or characters. My God these novels were written in the early 30’s, 40’s does this make JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis, Bob Kane, Stan Lee, Jerry Siegel, Joe Simon, William Moulton Marston (Creator of Wonder Woman)
So before one announces that Disney is a racist company please check you facts

I am so very excited about this movie coming out! :D Disney is long overdue for a princess that will be such a role model to not just Black American little girls, but ALL girls! Jasmine was Arab/Indian. Pocahontas was Native American! So she is the first Black princess. And whoever put Mulan is a dummy because she was Asian. I’m happy about the new princess…yaaayy!

What? Just because they throw a movie together and create a black princess is supposed to make alright? Hell no! WE had Mulan from ancient China, Jasmine from ancient Arabia, Snow White from Germany, and Beauty from France. None are American. Well where the hell are the AFRICAN Princesses. They think if they throw f***ing Lion King on the Big Screen it’ll shut us blacks up? Just what the hell were they thinking?
