CBS Cancels Daytime Drama ‘As The World Turns’

Dunzo!

Bummer news for fans of the CBS daytime drama As the World Turns … it is being reported today that the long-running soap has been canceled and will go off the air in September of next year. Now, I don’t watch ATWT but I’m well aware of the show’s groundbreaking storyline that revolves around same-sex couple Luke and Noah and I am really saddened that this daytime drama will be coming to an end. Once ATWT ends its run, CBS will only be producing 2 daytime dramas (which are, incidentally, my fave soaps) The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful:

And then there were six. The ailing soap industry took another hit this morning with the announcement that CBS has canceled As the World Turns. The show will end its 54-year run in September. The move, which comes just three months after CBS bid adieu to Guiding Light, will leave just six soaps on the air. The number could soon shrink to five if ABC axes One Life to Live, as has been rumored. “We are disappointed and saddened by the news that the show is not being renewed,” said ATWT exec producer Chris Goutman in a statement. ”It will certainly be a loss for all of us, and for the show’s loyal audience.” Producers are shopping the show around to other outlets, but don’t hold your breath. A similar effort was mounted for GL, and we saw how well that worked out … To watch the once-mighty industry wither away like this is beyond depressing.

It seems pretty obvious to me that very soon all of the daytime dramas will be off the air … it’s just a matter of which soaps will last the longest. I take heart in the fact that Y&R is the #1 daytime drama on TV (and has been for many years) so it and its sister show B&B have good chances for survival … but they cannot last forever. It’s really crazy to think that soap operas may be no more … and soon! This is very sad news for fans of daytime drama … the writing is very clearly on the wall. Which soap opera will be axed next?

wow so fucking lame, ATWT is my favorite soap opera. JACK AND CARLY<333333333. How could they do this??? I watch the othjer two shows but nothing stands close to ATWT. This is so lame. =/

This is very upsetting. I didn’t watch Guiding Light and I don’t watch ATWT, but daytime dramas have been such a staple for so long and it’s sad to see such a long-running show go. There were rumors years ago that Days would be cancelled soon and I pray that that doesn’t ever happen, but with all the reality tv drama there is now, soaps are being put on the back burner.

  3. I hear (from the soap blogs) that “One Life to Live” will be most likely to go next.

I am so not understanding the entertainment industry these days. It seems like everything is being cancelled. I understand this soap has been on the air for 50+ years but why is this happening. In the 90′s this would have not happened. I dunno. I am baffled..

Is there anyway that a channel like soap net can save these shows and just have them live there. Instead of playing reruns from the afternoon? I wonder if anyone is looking into that, then all the soaps could go there and no one would lose their jobs, really sad!

I love my Days of Our Lives. I have been watching for 15 years since I was just ten years old. I can deal with the lose of Passions (since the best actors are on days too now..) I wonder if you DVR something if it shows in the ratings? I hope so!! Honestly, does daytime TV really need another court show or talk show?

My sister and I just took a moment to commiserate. I don’t watch ATWT, but she does. We’re both avid soap watchers though, so this is starting to get worrisome. GL always had issues, so it wasn’t too shocking to see it go, but for some reason, ATWT seems like the first real step to ending them all. So depressing. I watch DOOL, GH, and Y&R. I can at least take comfort in the fact that two of those will outlast most other soaps.

@Dwight- NOOOO!!!!!!!! OLTL is my favorite soap! I watch it everyday and it’s actually getting really good. :( What will I do without my Todd fix???

  9. frisa

Noooooooooooooo…..I love this show and have watched for 30 years!!! How can this be happening???

That sucks! ATWT was my soap! My friend and I even went to the convention and met all the actors a couple of years ago – it was full of crazed middle aged ladies. Talk about a hoot! Peace out, ATWT.

Well, I hope the last episode shows all the nice characters destined to live happily ever after. It’s the least they could do for their dedicated fans.

All My Children was in grave danger. Hopefully their decision to move from NY to LA helps. They also just got rid of their headwriter Chuck Pratt Jr so hopefully that’ll bring some life back to the show. I’m not afraid to say that Pratt is the reason why the show was going to shits. He turned some really good storylines to crap. Thank God ABC’s head of daytime saw that the fans were very unhappy and axed him.

I really hope daytime TV has a few more years to go. I can’t imagine TV without it.

soaps need to change their format. they all need to go to 30 mins like the bold and beatiful or once a week. the production cost is what’s causing them to shut down. this is a sad sad day.

This is one of the soaps I used to watch with my mom when I was younger. I’ve been following it religiously for years and years. This makes me sooo sad. The only consolation is our favorite couples will be together (Simon and Katie <3 )!

Here in New Zealand, they’ve taken off Y&TR & Days after 30 something years … I don’t really get it? These shows have lived through recessions and ratings dips before. Suddenly it feels like TV is dying, and many of these shows are not going to cut it online. Do we really only want to be left with cheap “reality”?
