Alyson Hannigan Is NOT Interested In A Whedon-less ‘Buffy’ Remake

Back in May we learned the HORRIFYING news that plans are in the works to remake Buffy the Vampire Slayer the movie WITHOUT creator Joss Whedon’s involvement and shortly thereafter we found out what Joss himself thought about the idea. Today we are hearing from How I Met Your Mother star Alyson Hannigan (who famously played Buffy BFF Willow Rosenberg on the long running BtVS TV series) and she, too, expresses her disdain for any Buffy remake that does not include the master Joss Whedon:

There’s been talk for months now about a reboot of Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer series. Plans are underway to relaunch it as a new movie franchise, a movie franchise with no connection to the popular television series and worse, no involvement from creator Joss Whedon. Today we had a chance to sit down with former Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Alyson Hannigan. She played Buffy’s nerdy yet loveable sidekick Willow during the show’s run and for my money it was she, not Buffy, who was by far the best part of the series. Willow’s one of the biggest reasons Buffy worked as well as it did and though Hannigan has now moved on to other things (like How I Met Your Mother) it’s almost impossible to imagine any Buffy project without her. Well start imagining. We asked her about those Buffy remake plans and she seems as perturbed by the whole thing as the show’s fans. When we asked her what she thought of Buffy without Joss she said, “Yeah, and that’s a very big mistake in my opinion.” Whedon wrote both the 90s movie and ran the subsequent spin-off television show she was a part of. So it makes sense that Hannigan says, “I mean if Joss isn’t involved, it’s only the title.” And without Joss, there’s no way they’ll get her involved in it. Not even for a cameo. She says, “Not without Joss. Joss is the only reason that we would go back. I mean, it’s just ridiculous to think of that TV show without Joss. That’s just silly to me… And all the fans know that, too, so I don’t know what they’re thinking.” Hannigan’s reaction to remake echos that of former Giles Anthony Stewart Head, who, rather gleefully trashed the notion a few weeks ago HERE. Look it’s no mystery why they’re doing this. Vampires are hot and let’s face it, Twilight is basically just a watered down Buffy ripoff so why not bring back the real deal and get rich. But I’m pretty sure nobody wants it. Not the fans, not the Buffy cast, and probably not Twilight fans who are too busy swooning over Edward to notice anything else.

Finally … some reason in all of this madness. Of course the fans would be put off by this idiotic notion of remaking Buffy the Vampire Slayer without Joss Whedon but I’m very comforted by the fact that the actors themselves are just as perturbed. I love that Aly and Anthony Stewart Head are sticking by Whedon and are vehemently refusing to have anything AT ALL to do with this pitiful idea of a remake. I hope that plans for this proposed remake crash and burn, never to be heard from again. Until they are willing to work WITH Joss Whedon, I don’t think anyone at all is interested in any other scenario. I’m more intrigued by the reports that Whedon may turn his Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 comic book series into an animated web series. No Whedon, No Way! That seems to be the mantra of every single Buffy fan!!

  • NO WHEDON, NO WAY. —> Let’s print this on shirts and do a petition or something.

As much as I would love a Buffy remake, it wouldn’t be the same without Joss behind it, I’m sure.

I agree. I really loved BtVS when it was on the air and still watch the shows on DVD. It is a great show and everything great about it came from the wonderful cast, and Joss Whedon’s direction.

    No Whedon, No definite way!
Thank god that Aly and Tony are backing up Joss in this way, as all of us fans are! This would be a disgrace to try and remake the best show without the original cast and Joss!

No whedon no way for sure. Good to see other cast members coming out in support of the integrity of the buffy name. It still astounds me that they want to make a movie without him, we are such a dedicated and passionate fan base of joss whedons work, as if we would have supported something like that. Geez.

Why are they underestimating the fans? I have yet to meet a “casual” fan of the show. Of course we know that the remake would suck without Joss Whedon and no one will be wasting their money on such crap.
