‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ Reportedly Finds New Life In A New Web Series

Okay … let’s take this new report with a HUGE grain of salt but it sounds like Buffy the Vampire Slayer may rise from the dead, once again, in a new animated web series. As many of you are prolly still very painfully aware, Whedon’s latest endeavor Dollhouse was canceled by Fox last week … but that means that Joss has a bunch of newly freed up time on his hands. According to SyFy’s SciFiWire, Whedon is now planning to bring the Season 8 comic book series based on BtVS to life in a new animated web series:

Buffy lives! No, not the proposed Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie that wouldn’t involve creator Joss Whedon or anyone from the beloved TV show, which all serious Bronzers consider an abomination against nature. Rather, a series of motion-comic webisodes based on Whedon’s highly successful series of “Season Eight” comics. An actor friend of ours has clued us in to the casting of the new Buffy webisodes, which makes it sound like the proposed Web series is moving ahead quickly. Based on the breakdown, the series will be based on the comics and feature the characters Twilight, the Big Bad of Season Eight, and evil British socialite Slayer Lady Genevieve Savidge, who plots to usurp Buffy’s place in the Slayer hierarchy. Casting director Jeff Shuter is also looking for voice actors to play the parts of familiar Buffyverse characters Faith, Kennedy and Robin Wood, as well as a bunch of new characters (including someone who sounds like actor Daniel Craig to play a character based on the James Bond star). Below is the full breakdown, with character names and descriptions. Now that Dollhouse is winding up, Cabin in the Woods is delayed until 2011 and there’s no new Dr. Horrible on the immediate horizon, this is the best news yet for a Whedonite. Yay!

I know it’s a far cry from having the live-action Buffy gang back together again but it’s a damn fine consolation prize. I’ve been really enjoying the BtVS Season 8 comics and I think they will make an EXCELLENT animated series. Please gods, let this happen … fans of the Buffyverse could really use this sort of great news right about now. What do y’all think … would you watch an animated webseries based on Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

Excited!! Anything that brings buffy back in some form that is Whedon-authorised/created is great news! Am still holding on for a real-life continuation/reunion some day but for now this is awesome! I will be watching for sure!

I’m a HUGE Buffy fan. I read all the season 8 comics & completely loved the show but come oooooooooon!
Beating a dead horse? If they keep trying to bring Buffy back to life it will be totally destroyed. Leave it as it is! Joss should spend more time trying to find away to continue Dollhouse.

  • Meagan

I LOVE the idea, but I don’t think it will be the same without the original actors’ voices…

  • Sandy

I love this idea, but I must admit that I prefer the Angel comic book story line over the Buffy one. The Buffy story story has seem to lost some of its punch and meanders all over, but the Angel story is sharp and would translate really well into this format!

OMG!~ i hope the characters are drawn well and hav matchy voices!

  • yay buffy!

I squealed while reading this headline. I would give anything for Buffy to be back, but I am not too sure about having it back without originals. With the cancelation of Dollhouse, anything Joss Whedon at this point will do I guess. Hopefully if it is true, it will work out and will not take away (if possible) from the original series.

i agree with megan, it kinda feels like if joss goes back to buffy to re-produce season 8 it’s kinda like beating a dead horse – unless they can do a really epic, serenity-like movie with the original cast, which seems not to be happening – he should work on trying to get dollhouse back on the air! … and that’s not to say i don’t love the comics – but they already have the comics – do something new!

    • @zoe — Have you been reading the Season 8 comics? They’ve been published for over a year now and pick up where Season 7 left off … they are amazing!

  • Heather

Oh this is exciting news!! I’ve collected both covers of the comic since they came out!! And now that they’ve brought Oz back I’d love to see an animated version!! yeah!!

  • Season 8 comics? How come I know nothing of this? I feel so lame. :(

Why do they need to recast the characters? I mean, “Dollhouse” has been cancelled so Eliza Dushku should be free for a few studio sessions to record Faith’s dialogue. What’s Nick Brendon and Tony Head doing these days? Hell, Seth Green lends his voice to three animated series…couldn’t he take a few hours and record Oz’s dialogue while he’s already in the studio recording for “Family Guy?”. Sarah Michelle Gellar just had a baby, so recording Buffy’s dialogue might be an easy gig for her while she’s taking a maternity leave from acting. I say pay a few extra bucks more and get as much of the original cast back as you can.

Trent: I definetely read the season 8 comics, haven’t gotten all the way through but I have the first few books and you’re right, they are amazing… but, I dunno, I guess without the real actors it’s not gonna be the same – at least with Dollhouse, those actors may still be able to continue with the series… BUT – I’ve always felt Buffy was shot from a comic book perspective and has the aesthetic for any artistic venue – the cover art is amazing, for example – anyways, getting back to the point, the art in the comics is amazing and I wouldn’t mind a live-action version but a webseries has to be totally accessible online (I’m a Canuck fan), and not be too childlike in its animation, and potentially with the original cast, and not take too much time, cause, gosh, a young shopkeeper’s heart can’t take it…
my long and rambly opinion… :) thanks for asking
