The 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards Are Handed Out

Queen B takes home 3 awards, thanks hubby Jay-Z for "putting a ring on it"

MTV held its 16th annual Europe Music Awards in Berlin, Germany last night and brought out a host of musicians to appear, perform and/or collect awards. Beyoncé turned out to be the big winner at last night’s MTV EMAs but a whole bunch of other folks made their way to the event to celebrate a night of music achievement. Here are a few photos from the red carpet arrivals last night:

But, as I mentioned above … the Queen B reigned supreme last night. Not only did she look fabulous on the red carpet but she also looked fabulous on the MTV EMAs performance stage … oh and she collected awards for Best Female, Best Song (Halo) and Best Video of the Year or her worldwide smash hit song Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It). After the jump, check out some photos from the EMAs stage and find out who else took home awards last night …

Berlin loves Beyonce. The R&B superstar scooped up three wins Thursday at the 16th annual MTV Europe Music Awards, including trophies for best female, best song for Halo and best video for her No. 1 smash, Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It.) When she won the best video award, she thanked Jay-Z— who just happens to be her husband — for “putting a ring on it.” Jay-Z was also honored, winning MTV Europe’s best urban act — though he said he looked forward to the day when “all those awards come down” that it’s just music, plain and simple, adding “Danke schoen” (thank you in German) before leaving the stage. Other winners included Green Day, the established trio whose punk-influenced tunes have garnered it a fan legion worldwide. The trio won the award for best rock act while U2, which earlier Thursday performed a six-song mini-set in front of the German capital’s iconic Brandenburg Gate, won best live act. U2 frontman Bono paid tribute to Berlin, which marks the 20th anniversary of the collapse of the Berlin Wall on Monday, for its grit and determination. The band recorded its LP Achtung Baby in the city and drew inspiration from reunification to write its oft-played single One. German pop quartet Tokio Hotel, which has toured steadfastly and built up a fan base outside of Germany won best group and played a set that saw its amps and equipment light up in organized pyrotechnics. Lady Gaga took best new act though she was not in person, having had to stay in New York and Eminem took best male, beating out Kanye West, Mika, Robbie Williams and Jay-Z for award. Turkey’s maNga took home the best European act, giving Turkey the award for the second consecutive year — last year the country’s Emre Aydin scored a trophy. Katy Perry, who hosted the show for the second consecutive year, lauded Berlin and Germany, citing its history of division by the wall and sported a bevy of toned-down yet sultry costumes that hearkened back to Berlin’s Weimar-era of hedonism and decadence. The telecast also featured performances by Foo Fighters, Leona Lewis and Shakira. Berlin is the only city to host the awards show twice — in 1994 and this year — a decision MTV said it made to mark the 20th anniversary of the Berlin Wall’s collapse.

It sounds like it was a fun night for the folks in Berlin … much love and congrats goes out to all the winners. Click HERE for a full list of 2009 MTV EMA winners … did your fave performer take home an EMA trophy last night?

being from berlin makes me very proud ! berlin belongs to the coolest cities in the world. the club “berghain” in berlin is rated one of the best dance-temples in the world !!

  2. Ama

Looks like it was a fun event :)

  3. Deanna

Yeah! I was so glad Tokio Hotel one, their performance was awsome ^_^

  4. CHASE

Beyonce is OK in my book but when she performs, she never really sings. She only sings the veruses and then the prerecorded track comes in. And, also, she lipsynches to prerecorded vocals as well but no one ever gives her any flack because she’s Beyonce. I know I may seem a bit hypocritical because I’m a Britney fan BUT Britney’s dance moves were always way more complex than Beyonce’s. It’s the truth. I realize Beyonce dances and all but her dancing isn’t really dancing. All she does is shake her ass and that’s pretty much it. It isn’t really complex and anyone can learn those type of moves through a dance class at a local community college.

Does anybody know when they will air this? I loved watching last years performance, Katy Perry is an awesome host and the performances rock.

  6. Juneh

I really liked the mix of different songs Katy Perry did when the show started, really nice!

  7. Alyssa

Seriously…is Beyonce done wearing leotards? I like her music but that’s all she wears & I’m pretty sick of it.

  8. Mark

Um, Beyonce never lip-synchs. I’ve been to all her solo tour shows in LA and it is always 100% live. She doesnt sing the chorus to Single Ladies bc she has a full band and background singers but she is always singing live and giving everyone their moneys-worth.

  9. m

katy perry’s an atrocious live singer.

  10. A

This was fun to watch, but wow. Katy Perry is SUCH a bimbo. Who gave her permission to speak?

  11. Luvly.Miss

Dont the JB’s just look hot OMFG!!!! Cant wait!!

  12. J

I too, a Britney, but agree with CHASE. Okay some may say Britneys dancing isn’t up to scratch as of late. But we all know she is the better dancer than Beyonce. Beyonce does the mix. Sings live with ballads, sings along with pre-recorded on up-tempo tracks, lip-synches, and half sings.

Beyonce is a good dancer herself, but only when she lets herself. Like for instance i’m remembering the Baby Boy film clip and she dances solo. Or the Deja Vu clip. Yes Single Ladies choreography is good (yet copied) – but Beyonce, i wouldn’t say can’t, but doesn’t dance choreography cause like CHASE said, she just shakes her ass and moves her hips.

I thought the Sweet Dreams performance was ape shit. There was probably 1.30 of singing. It’s probably her greatest song IMO – and she actually made me hate it a little. The outfit was hideous too.

To me, she was trying up her game over Rihanna. I know that sounds stupid. But the backup dancers dressing like Rihanna? Beyonce wearing those leg-straps like Rihanna does. But then she also looks like she is wearing similar outfit to Britney from her 3 video. Hmmmmmmmmmm

I don’t really like Beyonce. I think she is way overrated by critics, fans and fellow musicians. She is good at what she does – but they pamper her with too many compliments. Her ego is massive without coming across as Kanye West. She’s the type that can be upstaged but makes sure she does something to cover it up. Destiny’s Child was HER band (no compliment there) and its a shame she wagered her friendships & all that to be the face of the band, take control and steal the limelight.

I cannot stand people like that. Hence why i don’t like Beyonce, Bono from U2. The list goes on… i udnerstand it more in rock bands but still think the fame and fortune and exposure should be shared equally, even if you cannot help it. Ehhh at least Kelly Rowlands greater good looks will never disapper and Beyonce will never take that crown from her.

I watched the EMAs on MTV’s live stream yesterday and I was extremely impressed! It was a great show! I think that Berlin is a great city and definitely a great place to host the EMAs. For me the highlight had to be Tokio Hotel’s performance of their new single “World Behind My Wall”. It was simply amazing and they pyro was awesome! That performance alone demonstrates why they are so deserving of the Best Group award that they won!

The only complain I have was Katy Perry’s horrible hosting job. I found her commentary to be boring and not entertaining. I don’t know if it came across that way due to nerves about hosting the big show or what but they should have had someone else host it.

@J – “Destiny’s Child was HER band (no compliment there) and its a shame she wagered her friendships & all that to be the face of the band, take control and steal the limelight.”

It was pretty much the fans of DC that singled out Beyonce. Her two former bandmates have tried, to varying degrees of success, at solo careers, but the lukewarm interest only underlines the fact that the fans wanted Beyonce without the other two and they still do.

Yeah, work that Kelly Rowlands will never disappear thing. By the by, do you know Beyonce? ‘Cause I’ve never gotten that massive ego vibe from her, but if you have an example, I’d love to hear it. Really, I mean that.

Some days Beyonce looks like Lady GaGa too. I don’t think Beyonce has to worry about one upping RiRi. Or Britney.

  15. Jaspar

Tokio Hotel’s performance rocked the show. The best of the night. They definitely deserved Best Group.

  16. yariana

Tokio Hotel peformance was the bomb… AMAZING!!
    i’m so proud….

  17. Dacia

I loved Tokio Hotels performance. It was amazing and a perfect performance for the evening!

  18. nicole

@snowball – it wasnt the fans singling out beyonce…it was her dad. he shuts people down behind the sences. like havign Latoya Luckett blacklisted at the BET awards saying if she performs then beyonce wont…or paying off radio djs to not play latoyas song. and you can say there rumors…but they’ve been around way to long to not have some truth behind them. her dads into some shady business deals.

  19. xander

Totally agree w/ A & M, Katy Perry cannot sing live for anything and she’s not funny at all. Loved U2, Green Day & Tokio Hotel–3 awesome performances and 3 well-deserved awards!

  20. scarlett

Tokio Hotel did a great perfomance!

  21. luvtokiohotel

Tokio Hotel had an amazing and breath taking performance last night! Loved how they added the fire to it too!

  22. Alpaca Mom

Quote: “German pop quartet Tokio Hotel, which has toured steadfastly and built up a fan base outside of Germany won best group and played a set that saw its amps and equipment light up in organized pyrotechnics.”

That was an incredible perfomance! TH always goes all-out! So happy they won!

  23. Deanna

The Tokio Hotel performance was by far my favorite part of the whole show! They keep getting better and better.
I’m forever grateful to Europe MTV for streaming the awards online for us Americans that can’t watch it on TV because our MTV refuses to play anything music related.
That being said, it was otherwise a great show. =]

  24. Lena

This years EMAs was not bad. Shakira’s performance was quite weak compared to the other performers of that night. I’d say the best performances was U2 and Tokio Hotel. Glad they each took home an award. They were both very deserving of the recognition.

  25. Ryu

Tokio Hotel’s World Behind My Wall lit up the stage. It was a fabulous performance and then they went on to win Best Group. I loved U2′s One, and Green Day’s amazing opening as well.

  26. Veronica

Tokio Hotel delivered an amazing performance. I’m so happy they won the award for Best Group.

  27. Gina

Great show! Tokio Hotel was really impressive. And U2 were great!

  28. Jeremy

Check out the Jonas brother in the middle. He is totally sporting a JFK jr look!

  29. ashley

Does the front man of Tokkio Hotel sold Bride of Frankenstein hair style.

  30. nette

ahaha i love bill. he takes his hair so seriously.

  31. Great photo! Beyonce and Jay-Z are so hot!

  32. sweetascAndie

Tokio Hotel’s performance was AHHHHHMAZING!!! :DD
They definitely deserved to win Best Group :)
i also really enjoyed Beyoncé’s and Shakira’s performances!

but Katy Perry was an absolutely terrible choice for host… :P

  33. Jaye

katy perry needs to permanently disappear. she sucks at EVERYTHING, yet she’s constantly in the spotlight (and for waaaay too long already!). anyone have any idea why? seriously.

  34. Beyonce you did a great job forget what all the haters have to say they probably, big ass hell and can’t move their fucking hips or ass.

  35. jay z , luv ur performance.u got a great women there.keep loving her. love u both as a couple.great talent
