First Look: Rihanna, ‘Rated R’

Edgy

Last week we got our first look at the cover artwork for Rihanna‘s new single Russian Roulette, the first from her new album Rated R due out on November 23. Today, courtesy of PopEater, we get our first look at the album cover artwork for Rated R itself … behold:

You’ve probably seen Rihanna’s racy single cover, and now PopEater is proud to exclusively premiere the cover for her impending album, ‘Rated R.’ The grainy black-and-white cover shows the R&B queen draped in hand jewelry and covering one eye. The album, which is set to be released on Monday, Nov. 23, is Rihanna’s first album since 2007′s ‘Good Girl Gone Bad.’ It is also Rihanna’s first album since she was assaulted by boyfriend Chris Brown in February. The ‘Rated R’ cover was shot by famed photographer Ellen von Unwerth, who says that “Rihanna was looking to create something a bit new for the look of the album.” Von Unwerth goes on to say that Rihanna is “so beautiful, sweet and tough at the same time — and a pleasure to shoot,” adding that she’s “fantastic to work with — very giving, very creative, very involved in every aspect of the shoot, and ready to push the boundaries.”

As far as album covers go, this is one ain’t too shabby. The look of the photo reminds me of the photospread Ri Ri did for Italian Vogue over the Summer. To be honest, I expected the album artwork to be more racy … I like that it’s kinda understated. I’m SO dying to hear this album tho … the photos are nice and all but it’s all about the music. I can’t wait to hear more from Rated R. As far as the coverphoto goes, tho, what do y’all think … do you like?

Looks like an old vinyl album!

I like it actually. Very different and creative even though its simple. I see she’s going in the same route Britney did by using the first letter of her name as her symbol this era.

love it. I want to hear her album NOW!

omfg I LOVE IT! Fierce. I love the symbolism to Chris Brown (the eye covered but still looking fierce and strong)

bottom two. tyra would kick her out for looking like she has a migraine.

  9. I like this. I expected something colorful because it’s Rihanna. I’m glad we got this.

I would have preferred if it wasn’t black and white and embossed. I think bright colors would have been better because this one is almost similar to her other album cover. It should be more flamboyant, I think. Pass.

I don’t think she even takes a bad picture. I do however like her better ( to look at) when she is a little “softer”. Still gorgeous. As always.

totally rihanna. i know this is gonna get a lot of hating – the artwork, the theme & everything. In some ways im a bit disappointed cause its very similar to Good Girl Gone Bad in the sense of theme she is going for, but this is much more mature which is good. I’m not saying musically its the same cause we only heard one (very different) song – but the fashion etc.. seem the same.

But then, only Rihanna could work something like this. She has actually shocked me in becoming, what i would say, a seperate figure to other artists in her fashion & music. I’ve always look at her as some push-over that her label controls. I still think she is heavily controlled with themes & music – but she seems a little more in control nowadays. I guess they trust her cause she has become quite popular.

I just wish/hope a lot of content is written by her or have major input. Don’t like Ne-Yo write a lot of stuff, speak for yourself! Thats what i am hoping for. I cannot believe her album is dropped in under a month – its so soon. Usually big releases like this are announced sooner and have a music vid/song released sooner. I hope this promotion don’t backfire. I’m sure she will be heading #1 – rub it in Chris’ face.
