At long last … she did it. Kylie Minogue kicked off the first night of her first ever North American Tour at the Fox Oakland Theater in Oakland, CA last night and was met with overwhelming adoration and thundering applause by the sold out venue. I was very fortunate to be in the hiz last night for Kylie‘s first US date of this tour but I will save my personal photos and reflections for a post later on in the day. Kylie has said that she wants this small North American Tour to feature some of the “greatest hits” from her previous tours and I think she really came up with a fantastic show. Last night’s performance was simply spectacular, as the photos below suggest:

Australian pop star Kylie Minogue kicked off her first-ever American tour with a driving disco beat, a bevy of well-muscled dancers, and a lot of leg, hoping to finally crack the lucrative U.S. market. The pop diva, no stranger to spectacle, made her first appearance adorned in pink feathers as she was lowered onto the stage from a metallic skull. “Well, good evening — finally!” exclaimed the 41-year-old Grammy-winning singing, who has never toured the United States before. “All this anticipation — on my part!” In a fast-paced, two-hour show, Minogue made her way through her international hits, including “Slow,” “Spinning Around” and “Wow.” But the biggest applause greeted “Can’t Get You Out of My Head,” her 2001 club hit. The tour, which began Wednesday night in Oakland outside San Francisco, takes Minogue to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York, with one stop in Toronto. Minogue first began her career as an actress on the Australian soap opera “Neighbors,” but was catapulted to fame after her 1987 remake of ’60s hit “Locomotion” hit the top of the charts. Some 10 studio albums have followed and a handful of movies, giving Minogue mega-star status in Britain, Europe and Asia as well as her native Australia. Minogue was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 but she returned to performing after recovering from surgery and chemotherapy. In a world tour last year she visited more than 21 countries. Her career also includes a lingerie line, perfumes, linen and a children’s book. But the star, who has a wax image of her likeness in Madame Tussauds, has never quite managed to crack the U.S. market, a notion that seemed incomprehensible to one fan. “Americans are stupid, obviously,” said Dustin Thornhill, 28, of San Francisco, who was at the show with friend Nicky Bangles, 24. The pair planned to see Minogue again in Los Angeles. “We’re stalking her — sort of,” Thornhill said. Like many in the audience, the two said they were thrilled to finally have the opportunity to see Minogue perform. “We’re so excited. We’ve been waiting millions of years,” Bangles said, adding that Minogue is an icon to gay men. “She wears outfits that are amazing. What gay man wouldn’t love it?” Bangles asked, adding, “Madonna who?” To a constantly shifting set of images projected on a video backdrop — including some of well-chiseled men in the shower and others working out with gym equipment — Minogue and her scantily-clad dancers made their way through a series of hits. The singer delivered the sassy fashion she is known for, sporting a host of leg-baring outfits that included silver tunics, black boots, a Nautical cap and a sparkly black leotard. “Kylie’s a diva!” gushed Todd Hedgpeth, 39, of San Francisco. Minogue littlest American fan at the concert may have been Alexis Chiu, 9, who was looking at the T-shirts for sale with her mother, Donna. Why was she at Minogue’s first U.S. tour? “I’ve liked her since I was a baby,” said the youngest Chiu. “She likes that “Na, na, na” song,” explained her mother.
So many US fans have waited so long to finally get to see Kylie perform a proper concert in person … last night was a long time coming and I don’t believe there was a disappointed person in the crowd. I have only seen her in concert once before, on her KylieX2008 Tour last year but I’ve seen every concert performance she’s ever done on DVD. She really did put together a show that featured some great performances from all of those tours into one compact and upbeat show. I don’t even know what my fave song of the night was … they were all spectacular. Kylie did perform a new song titled Better Than Today. She informed us that she wanted to do something special for the US audience “that was a first” and that the song will be featured on her new album!! After the jump, check out a few professionally shot photos from last night’s show (they are spoilery so be mindful of that) and watch video of Kylie performing her new song Better Than Today …

I LOVED Kylie‘s entrance … she descended from the ceiling on a large black and shiny skull, reminiscent of the one she featured in her KylieX2008 Tour last year (but I believe this one was smaller). The audience last night really got more than their money’s worth. Here is video of Kylie‘s performance of Better Than Today:
Just, fantastic!! I will post some of my personal pics later on today … stay tuned!!

I was there last night as well. One of the best shows ever!!! I think the US fans are so lucky that we get to see her in a smaller venue. I never thought I would get to see Kylie perform from 10 feet away! For those of you who haven’t gotten tickets and still can, definitely go!

Thank god you wrote something, I was there last night and still can’t put into words how absolutely spectacular Kylie was. We drove 2 days from Seattle to see her and it was beyond worth it. I’m still aglow and voiceless. I LOVE Kylie.
She really is one of the greatest performers of our time really. She makes ya proud to be an Aussie – not only that she has true beauty. She probably has a little work done, but she looks natural and so sweet.

I hate to mention it, but does that outfit look similar to Lady Gaga’s & Beyonces outfit. The one from Paparazzi and Beyonces Tour?? Oh and Britney even wore/wears one on The Circus. I don’t know if Kylie first wore a similar one in KYLIEX2008 but yeah. Either way, she works it.

@J — Kylie has been a style innovator for years, Beyonce and Gaga have obvs been influenced by her.
Trent – I LOVED LOVED LOVED the show last night… And the costumes were amazing… However… There was a lot of black body suits going on… Still amazing… That was my only gripe… And I was really looking forward to I Should Be So Lucky… But I really can’t complain… It surpassed every fantasy I’ve ever had of seeing her LIVE
I was there both nights in Oakland and I agree the show was beyond fantastic….I have seen Kylie perform for TV appearances and on Jingle Ball 2002 but never a full concert until now, and it was sooooo worth the wait!! Looking forward to losing my voice some more tomorrow night at Hollywood Bowl!
