Trent Reznor – The Wave Goodbye Interview

TR talks about the end of Nine Inch Nails and his new beginning

On Thursday evening, I had the great fortune to attend the final Nine Inch Nails live performance at The Wiltern Theater here in Los Angeles, CA. But before Trent Reznor took the stage to perform the last NIN concert, he graciously set aside some time to sit down and grant me a short interview for Pink is the new Blog:

As you may recall, I was able to interview Reznor on the last night of the Lights in the Sky Tour last December in Las Vegas, NV so I was thrilled he was willing to chat with me again on the last night of the Wave Goodbye Tour, the last for Nine Inch Nails. In our 20 minute chat, TR explained how he goes about crafting a setlist for each performance, which live performance in his 20 year touring history stands out most in his mind, his plans for new music outside of Nine Inch Nails and more. After the jump, you can watch my interview with Trent Reznor in full …

Altho I was very nervous to talk to TR again on film, he made sure to set me at ease so that we could have an engaging and comfortable conversation. I’m always taken with how candid he is in interviews and cannot express enough how much I appreciate him taking the time to talk with me. His answer about his plans for new music left me hopeful and excited, which is much different than many NIN fans feel about the end of the band. I hope this interview will leave those of you who watch it just as hopeful and excited. Below is an audio version of our interview in case you’d rather hear it instead:

Many thanks to Trent Reznor and all of his support staff who helped make this interview possible. I should mention that the videographer who oversaw the official filming at all the NIN shows also filmed my interview with TR for possible usage … tho his camera was focused on me the entire time so I doubt it’ll be useful at all. You can hear me talking with him at the start of the MP3 of my TR interview. Much love and thanks goes out to David and to Ollie who helped out with the filming and photography. I hope you enjoy my interview with Trent as much as I do. I’ll have a review and photos from the final NIN show at The Wiltern this past Thursday night later on today.

    Hey trent,
That is soooo coool you got to interview Trent, he is SEXY!! But, you can’t really hear what you guys are saying with police cars and other sounds happening in the background?!?!

Oh well, good eye candy. ;-p

  2. Nintopia76

Tent V you are too adorable. You are an awesome interviewer. Thank you some much for sharing. I enjoyed the video very much, and I am excited for things to come from Mr Reznor.

  3. VampVertigo

you are so cool…didnt look nervous at all…i think you shoulda asked trent if he is invested in pharmaceutical industry or Tamiflu…since everyone of us are sick now!!! Haha! Again so nice meeting you. Interesting people make this world go round, and you are a fuckin DJ! Keep spinning!

  4. debho

Great interview! And so nice to finally “hear” you too.

  5. Awesome interview :)

The sound was a little hard to hear at times, but it was a great interview nonetheless. Thanks for posting!

Finally sat down and watched whole interview…This is one of the best, cushy interviews I’ve ever seen done with Trent…and I think Ive seen all of them…I could listen to you two talk all day. So many enlightened questions that provoked many illuminating answers. Laughed out loud several times…esp. about “throwing the mike at the monitor guys head”. He looked so comfortable and loose. Great job! Start working on the next interview to keep us updated! I’ll let you see my pink bat if you do!

your interview skills have improved from the last TR interview, where it seemed you were more nervous. You held it together much better. Great Job.
I’m excited too, for what ever he does next (musically I mean, I’m not concerned about his private life even though I wish him happiness). Another Ghosts etc, can’t wait. And really I prefer TR being more productive (not touring as NIN), it just means I get to listen to more of his music. I’m totally happy for you to be ablr to do the interview and see that last shows, especially the downward spiral set and the epic 39 song last gig, wow! Now go get married, eat rainbows and shit butterflies, just make some music! LOL

  8. nantucket68

How lucky to conduct his last interview! Great job and great questions. It really does make me look forward to what he has in store for us.

“Closer” playing while dancing in a cage wearing leather at Louisville, KY largest gay club @ 17 will always be one of those moments I will never forget. I was trying to seduce my gay bff…it didn’t work :(

  10. carrie

great interview, trent! i really liked when he said something about interesting things going on in his personal life. i know he’s getting married but he had that trent soon twinkle in his eyes….is trent going to be a dad soon? ;) ;) ;)

  11. Z

Every time I see a photo of the two Trents…you guys are dressed alike!

  12. Mike

Great interview Trent! I’m glad you asked the question about what the future holds as far as new music goes. I guess now we wait and see what happens!

  13. Caitlin

I can’t wait to see what trent does next! I love it when he tours… and I think he will again someday… but when he is free to “climb the walls” is when magic happens.

Year Zero TV show perhaps? =)

  14. Ryan

Awesome interview. I love how laid back and real Trent is. I can’t wait to hear what he does next! Thanks for sharing this and the twitters during the shows!

  15. NxN21

    Trent Vanegas-
Thank you for doing this last interview with TR, very good stuff. I’m glad to hear that his main focus now IS going to be new music. I was a little scared that he was going to fade away into the sunset like some artists that stop touring. Just an all around feel good Interview for the fans, thank you. Plus, You got him to talk about me (Thank you! haha) at the May 29th Chicago show. I’m the one that “smashed” the guitar on stage with him.

    Great stuff man!

  16. tatiana

Good job Trent, and nice legs.

  17. What a great interview. I always admire just how knowlegable about the music business as a whole Trent is. The thought and detail he seems to put into each show / cd is incredible.

  18. Trent is such a seasoned interviewee. Glad he was able to carry you though the interview…quite unprofessional to have someone scrolling though with the PALM, and having the door to the room wide open…the sound quality was horrible. Can’t really blame you for the sirens and such though. Just a suggestion, when you have someone responding to your questions, perhaps engage them..not stare at your questions, and not acknowledging their response. The ‘yeah, right…ahuh”, after he took the time to answer your questions was kinda rude. Looks like you are just trying to get through the questions, and not giving much care to what the answers are. Granted you are nervous, but it really came off “stand-off-ish”. Great questions, and thanks for posting it.

  19. Great job on the Interview with TR! This was the reason I got out of bed this morning and it was worth it! Thx Man – been awesome following you via twitter while going to the shows.

  20. essylt

Thank you for this great interview! Glad to hear about Trent having new projects in store. Can’t wait to hear/read more about his new music…
Great job and tthanks for sharing!

  21. Yoshata

You did a great job. Thanks for doing this, I loved it. :)

  22. Annastasia

Mariqueen is not pregnant….stop drawing conclusions when none are there…THIS is how rumors get started. It’s lame.

  23. Annastasia

Oh, and great interview Trent….you look great and you did a great job.

  24. Trent – For sure man. You’ve earned yourself a fan and I’ll still be here and around twitter.

  25. oh shit!!! lol I was right next to Trent Vanegas in the henry fonda show and didnt even know!!! lol wow

nows the time to say Hi ;P

  26. Ashley

Awesome interview!!! can’t wait to what TR does in the future.
    Thank you (to both Trents!)

  27. Andrea

It’s so weird to be able to see you and hear you Trent, i love it though! :) You’re like a real person now haha instead of just being some imaginary supper cool blogger guy. Great job in the interview, Trent Reznor seems like such a cool guy and he’s a mad genius so I’m super jealous. Keep up the good work kiddo, LOVE YOU!

  28. Awesome, AWESOME interview, Trents. Thanks for posting it up for all of us to see and enjoy. :)

  29. Elkay

What an honor. As bummed as I am that NIN is officially dunzo, we’re lucky enough to have 20 years worth of great music, videos, and memories from shows. I too am excited for new TR music (once he gets hitched and enjoys his new non-NIN life!).

  30. You know i get really confused because they are both named Trent so its like wtf, when people post comments here lol

  31. David

Where can i find this video that you speak of where Trent shows a kid how to smash a guitar??
i’ve looked all over youtube and i cant find it =(

  32. shannon

    Excellent interview once again.

  33. This is not the END of nine inch nails…. Trent has said in other interviews that he will continue to make NIN MUSIC aside from his other ventures, he’s just done touring…. VERY good interview by the way.

  34. …….but I do suspect NIN WILL tour again….someday….don’t forget, there was a 5 year gap between “The Downward Spiral” and “The Fragile”, and a 6 year gap between “The Fragile” and “With Teeth”….. NIN will tour again :-D

  35. fkjldas

    Can anyone make a transcript?

  36. Sarah

Not really a music fan but had to leave a comment on the nice legs! Woo hoo!

  37. Amazing interview, and so happy to hear Trent looking into the future.

  38. Mopotts

Hi Trent. You did a fantastic job interviewing TR! You definitely seemed much more comfortable this time around. :)

Also, it brought a HUGE smile to my face when you pulled out your piano key. At the PIne Knob show in May, you were telling me how you didn’t want to have him sign it because you didn’t want to seem like such an uber fan. So, I’m dying to know…did you have him sign it after this interview?!?!?

    Thanks for sharing this!!! <3

  39. Klaus

Great interview, but how about making it available to be saved thru the Vimeo page? You know us NIN fans – want to save every little piece of NIN-related media…. :)

  40. booboo

great interview Trent V… way to represent! and TR is forever awesome.
thanks for your efforts and for sharing :)

  42. chalkmaze

    Cool interview, as usual.

Sad to see Nine Inch Nails go, but at the same time Trent Reznor is NIN and he’s gonna be around, hopefully making the most of his well earned free-time, with more projects to look forward to in the distant future.

    *BIG SMILE*

  43. Ed

deinterlace and crop your vids. this blog is hard to digest on so many levels.

  44. Bezo

I can’t believe that the last night of touring with Nine Inch Nails you were granted an interview, in which you had to read heartfelt words to wish Trent well from your freakin cell phone…..!!!!! WTFIT??????? Trent has worked tirelessly for his fans and for the world of music to make an impact with everything that he has to give.. I would’ve at least memorized it, out of respect….

  46. georg

hahaha cool interview Trent. TR is a cyborg :D Thanks for this made me laugh big time :)
