The brothers known as Jonas are featured on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of Rolling Stone magazine. Try as I might to ignore them, these young men have fully infiltrated pop culture (as evident from their latest magazine cover) and have even started mingling into the goss world (by way of youngest brother Nick‘s rekindled romance with Miley Cyrus, essentially making them the Justin and Britney of this new generation) and therefore are finally worth talking about … or at least mentioning. Whether or not they remain worthy of talking about on a daily basis for months and years to come remains to be seen. But, since they are the coverstory band on the new issue of Rolling Stone … well, here we go. If the Jonas Brothers‘ first moment on the cover of Rolling Stone found them reaching the height of teen pop stardom, their latest — on stands this week — finds them pushing for an even loftier goal: musical credibility. “I think we are working to make that trade without having to give anything up,” Kevin Jonas tells Rolling Stone in our cover story. “But I think it will take time, because of where we came from. I would honestly say to anybody, if you were in a band like us, you would take advantage of those platforms too. It’s easy for people to say, ‘No, I’m a real rock & roller,’ but I think you do what you’ve got to do.” Our Jenny Eliscu spent time with the brothers in Los Angeles as they prepared to hit the road in support of their most ambitious album yet, Lines, Vines and Trying Times. The album, the tour and much of what the band does these days seems designed to help facilitate the leap from teen pop to contemporary rock. It’s a challenging feat that few have pulled off. But the brothers are working hard on what they know will be a long, slow march to credibility. Eliscu found Nick on point as the band’s creative lead, putting their touring band through their paces (his brothers have started calling him “Mr. President”), while Kevin helps to steer the Jonas business and image (he even built a foam 3-D scale model of the band’s new stage set, which now takes 180 people to assemble at each show). “We have an operation around us that we run,” Kevin tells Rolling Stone. “It’s not run for us, or dictated to us. Everything that we do, we sign off on.” But even with a strong operation and a lot of hard work, the band knows that teen idols rarely make the leap to “serious artist.” “Personally, I’m not in the band to say, ‘Hey, you need to respect us, take us seriously,’ because that’s kind of stupid,” Joe tells RS. “We’re doing it because we love it, and we don’t care what age group we attract. If they like our music, they like our music, and if they don’t, fine. We don’t need you like our music.”
In the end, I really respect that these young guys have as much control over their careers as they do. They seem pretty grounded and are talented … whether you appreciate their music or not (which I don’t) you have to give them props for doing their thing to the best of their ability and enjoying much success from all of their hard work. Gone are the days when popstars are completely controlled and exploited by larger entities (for example, like Tiffany in the 1980′s who was a huge popstar that had no say about anything and ended up with NOTHING after her career was all said and done). These days, these millionaire tween stars have a lot of control over their careers … it’s pretty incredible. After the jump, check out a few photos from their RS photoshoot …
It appears that they are trying to look more mature, at least in these photos, and yet still maintain their Jonas look. Again, I honestly am not a fan of their music but I can appreciate the appeal. I love me some terrible pop music and I’m sure if I listened to enough of their stuff I bet I could find a song that I like but it’s just not what I’m into. That being said, I’m sure their fans absolutely adore them which is all well and good. Obvs there is a market for a new “Hanson” band and these guys are running with it. Can’t blame ‘em, don’t hate ‘em and, on the real, have a modicum of respect for ‘em.

The more I hear about them, the more I can’t avoid comparing them to Hanson, who have fought tooth and nail to have complete creative control – true, they aren’t filling stadiums or landing magazine covers anymore, but they’re being true to themselves both personally and musically – I applaud the Jonas Brothers for doing the same, and I wish them all the best.
I can’t stand their music, but, like Trent said, they seem like they’re pretty grounded..They just seem like nice boys who are having the time of their lives and they seem like they’re pretty great to their fans, which is always a plus..I never see myself liking any of their songs, but as long as they are good role models for kids, I won’t hate on them.. ;)

Funny that this news comes out today. I am taking my daughters to their concert tonight in Denver. While I will not say that I am a fan of theirs, my girls are. I am more excited to see Jordin Sparks, who is headlining for them.
I never even thought of them as “A new Hansen” before! Wow, I feel so enlightened now…
I’m not a fan of their music either, but I agree with you on respecting them. I think every generation deserves a wholesome pop act that they can love to their hearts content. It kind of skipped my generation. We were too young for New Kids and too old for the next boyband craze (N’SYNC, Backstreet Boys, etc.).
I thought of Hanson too when I first heard of the Jonas Brothers. However, Hanson rocked, and I could care less about the JoBros. They needs to make a comeback and give them a run for their money.

I wouldn’t say all teen stars have this much creative control, just the ones who have already sold a gazillion albums and merchandise like these guys have. Disney is a crazy machine and it’s sad that they have dominated to such a degree, that struggling artists barely have a chance to make it anymore.
I do agree that they seem like nice guys and I respect that, but I think Disney has really lowered the bar for music aimed at young people. It’s just SUCH crap – all of it. They are all so terrible live too, it’s all just flash and gimmick and no substance.
When I was a teenager, I was listening to stuff like Depeche Mode and The Smiths so I can’t even relate. Thank goodness I had Madonna to look up to as well! I feel sorry for my little nieces for only having Miley Cyrus as an example to aspire to as she is so vapid and annoying.

Lol, I agree. That’s exactly what I thought the FIRST time they did Rolling Stone. I absolutely love the Jonas Brothers, and it really shames my siblings- who have no patience or respect for mediocre/lame Disney artists like Miley Cyrus (Nick- what’re you thinking?!).
I can’t help but like them, and I give them credit for trying to be “normal” versus being superstars, and having musical talent (yes, they do have talent).

I’ve tried many a time to understand the appeal of the Jonas Bros. but I’m not feeling them (looks or music). This is coming from someone who likes Taylor Swift, Zac Efron, and even thinks Miley Cyrus would be good with a few voice lessons (more control, pls). Jonas Bros., tho? Not so much.
The public has zero knowledge of what goes on an or how true the numbers reported are. The Jonas brothers are Disney manufactured widgets little different than the Partridge Family.
They are media driven, not music business and song driven.
Rolling Stone has not been Rolling Stone for many years now.
The Jonas Bros are really not that good, and everyone in the major music business knows this.

No, no, no…Hanson are BRILLIANT songwriters–even MMMBop was brills, and they were just babies! These guys are not. Hanson can stand on their own with Stevie Wonder; these boys faltered. So, I wish that the Hanson comparisons would just go away. Hanson rocks…JoBros do not.
The Hanson comparisons amuse me, because I’m from Tulsa, and know people who know them. And also because The Jonas Brothers played here the night before last and stayed in the hotel next door to where I work. I cut through at lunchtime and saw one of them heading for the tour bus which was idling outside. Then when I cut back through after getting food the bus was gone
No idea which brother it was though. I’m not exactly in their demographic.
@Jessica – I think Madonna was a great role model for young girls. She was talented, intelligent, strong, sassy, sexy, independent and hilarious and she still is. She’s the reason I’m a feminist today so I am super thankful she was around. I highly doubt my nieces will say the same 10 years from now about Miley Cyrus!

Hanson is still around. They never went any where. They now have their own record label that they record on and run. Not to mention their work with Africa and Tom’s Shoes.
