Drew Barrymore To Direct ‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’?

Entertainment Weekly magazine is reporting that Hollywood actress and movie producer Drew Barrymore is among the folks being considered by Summit Entertainment to direct the third installment of the movie franchise version of the Twilight Saga. Because the theatrical release of The Twilight Saga’s Eclipse has been set for a mere 7 months after the first sequel The Twilight Saga’s New Moon will be released in theaters, a different director will need to be at the helm of the third movie. According to EW, Drew Barrymore is in the running for directing duties:

As Summit Entertainment looks to lock in a director for the third installment of the Twilight series, Eclipse, the company is talking to a select group of directors — including actress-turned-helmer Drew Barrymore, EW has learned. While this news may come as a surprise to some, Barrymore did just finish work on her directorial debut, Whip It! starring Ellen Page. Neither Summit nor Barrymore’s reps would comment for this story.

Interesting. It remains to be seen who else is in this “select group of directors” under consideration but I hope that, like Drew, there are a few female directors in there. As you may or may not know, Drew’s production company made the new Charlie’s Angels movies that those turned out pretty cool. I have no idea what kind of job Drew might do as director of a movie like Eclipse but … I’d be willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. It sure does seem like a whole lot of Hollywood folks want to get their fingers in the Twilight Saga movie franchise pie … which kinda sorta worries me. What do y’all think?

  • Two totally different vibes…DO NOT WANT!!

  • Sinann

hmm i dunno i think it could go either way but i like drew barrymore shes rather “rock n roll” bout everything, i think she could make it work!

  • Katt

um, what? totally random. i don’t know much about her directing career, but it seems like an out-there match…..

  • babybunny

Drew has amazing talent. I think this could be a good match, *if* it were to happen. We will see.

  • Crystal

Love Drew. Not sure this is right for her :/

  • Angel

Do they really need to keep switching directors every twilight film that comes out? I really think this would spell even more t-r-o-u-b-l-e then I’m already predicting there’s going to be!

  • I agree, she’s good at producing and acting but directing this type film?…..I’m not sure

  • Pauline

I like Drew but I really don’t want to see her directing this. I want to see a more experienced director take the reigns. People such as myself who are really invested in these stories are just so worried about the movie going too “Hollywood”. The first movie, although the special effects could have been MUCH better, had an indy feel to it. Now it seems like everyone wants to cash in on it and I’m afraid it will lose that special something that we all hold dear.

    HELL NO!
Drew Barrymore has been such a hot mess lately! She would absolutely ruin it. She would probably show up for work half-drunk with plastic vampire fangs. Denied, much?

  • tiffany

I’ve never seen a movie that she actually directed so I dont know. If she does direct the movie I bet it would have a kick ass soundtrack tho.

  • Dots

I think fucking up the Twilight series is going to be a hobby of Summit

  • mimi

well, drew was an executive producer of “he’s just not that into you”.. and i wouldnt have thought it was “her” type of movie either. give her a go, i say!
its funny how must people are quick to jump on the “drew can’t do it” bandwagon, when in reality, none of us really know how she would do as a director. she can’t do a worse job than catherine hardwicke did, who in my opinion made the movie into an over the top, melodramatic, b-grade comedy.
    just one person’s opinion though.

Ok, before we start thinking about Eclipse, does anyone find it strange that New Moon comes out in less than 9 months? Have they even started filming? Do they give a shit about what kind of movie they end up with at all? Or do they just want to get something, ANYTHING out there for the rabid RP fans? Because I’m really hoping that everyone who LOVED the Twilight movie so much only love it because they think Rob is hot, because it was one of the crappiest book to movie adaptations I’ve ever seen. At this rate, every single one will get worse and worse. More awkward acting, more crappy effects, more things cut out that will most likely be thrown into the subsequent movies with no explanation whatsoever. The thing I’ve heard from many people who haven’t read the books is that they have no idea what was happening. They need to spend the time to make the movie appealing to people, even if they haven’t read the books.

Ok, I didn’t really mean to go on that rant, it just kind of popped out. I don’t really give a crap about who directs it as long as it’s better than Twilight.

@ Sara – Filming starts next month. Twilight was filmed last year in March and came out in November of last year so they’re pretty much on schedule. It’ll take about 45-60 days to film the movie. The script was finished before Twilight even came out. And the teaser trailer will most likely be out in the summer with a big blockbuster movie such as Transformers or Teriminator: Salvation. : ) Last year it was attached to The Dark Knight. <3

I say we give Drew a chance, she is an amazing talent who has been in this business for more than 20 years, thats longer than most of you have been alive!! For people to say this isn’t her type of movie, how the hell would you know?!? Drew is a totally kick ass rocker chick and she does have a bad girl past let’s not forget!! A love story with a twist, I think thats right up Drew’s alley, and plus its not like she could do any worse than the hot mess Catherine did, lets just say I didn’t love Twilight for the directing… and it wasn’t for Robert either!!

  • roxster

I dunno….just cause she had produced good movies doesn’t mean she is a good director. nobody has even seen her first effort yet, so this makes me nervous. I’d like for themt o go with someone whose proven themselves, given the rate they’re churning these things out they should at least make sure they can do everything else possible to make them good. don’t you guys love how twilight is still tricking out premieres in other parts of the world and they’re already starting the new one? if new moon is on the same world-wide release calendar, that would mean it would be just coming out in asia now, while the US and other parts of the world are just a few months away from eclipse. ridiculous.

  • maddi

errr wow well i guess i dont care cuz its just going to be another crappy teen movie

  • aimie

ummmm, i just don’t know if i’ll be 100% on board with this. she’s directed ONE movie… ONE. and my guess is it was a lower budget one without lots of special effect. good luck i say… but as eclipse is my fave of the 4 books… i pray whoever does it… doesn’t screw it up!

  • MissJ

Why did they bother to hire a director that couldn’t continue the series. I think changing directors just deflates the energy of the whole process of a saga.
