Extra! is reporting that they have scored a new interview with 14-time Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps in the wake of the photo scandal that broke out over the weekend which showed Phelps puffin’ on a humungo marijuana pipe (a bong). According to Phelps, he claims that he does not take drugs … despite getting caught with the bong. HMMM:
“Extra” has obtained an interview with Michael Phelps and the swimming phenomenon states, “I don’t take drugs. I get drug tested all the time. You look at the records and you can see.” The Olympic superstar also confesses it was a mistake to smoke marijuana and take pictures, saying, “It’s times like these where you really do get true support. I’ve been able to really find out who my friends and family are through this. By no means has it been easy… it’s a bad judgment and a bad mistake and something I’ll learn from.”
You gotta respect the guy for owning up to his bad judgment. While some may feel that what he did is “no big deal”, I’m sure there are many mothers out there who think it’s a big deal when their children see one of their sports heroes engaging in illegal use of a controlled substance. I absolutely believe that Phelps has learned from this mistake. I’m sure if he plans to continue competing in future Olympic Games, he will now be more careful about what he does and with whom. I absolutely admire that he is publicly admitting his wrongdoing … if he plans to stay a public figure, he’s gonna have to be a good boy. He’s got many years after he retires from competitive sport to smoke whatever the heck he wants ;) This interview with Extra! airs tonight.

I agree “K”. This is ridiculous. Now they are saying the Olympics Commissioner wants to have a talk with him… Its green and natural and obviously does not impact his swimming. Although he is a public figure and role model, people are truly blowing it out of proportion… Leave him alone… Sweep it under the carpet along with Kate Moss’s coke addiction, etc, etc, etc.
Besides, I don’t even see any smoke in that “water bubbler” ;-)

If he only smokes the ganja on really rare occasions, then that could be what he means, that he doesn’t take them with regularity, but enjoys the odd puff here and there. Which I’d agree with that logic, but I also think anyone that uses a bong is a full on pothead. The occasional smokers I know only smoke a j, usually sharing it.
the guy has a learning disability…is a great swimmer…but not the brightest bulb on the tree. he obviously is missing the common sense chip. his mom knew this and thats why she got him involved in sports. there are so many people out there who will want to bring him down and hang on to him for his money and fame. a smart cookie would never have allowed himself to be in this position. the hookers and strippers that suddenly showed up around him was clue number one: he needs to be handled by someone trustworthy…..like his mom or sister or a very trusted friend.

Too bad weed won’t make him hot. I think he’s a good person but not a wise choice. You’d think someone who supposedly takes care of his body would not smoke pot. But, he’s 23 and it’s not a huge deal. Still, Ian Thorpe is way hotter, even though he’s packed on the lbs. M Phelps is prob the most famous unattractive man on Earth. Other than Mini Me.

I don’t think his apology is sincere. Drugs are bad, mmn-kay, especially if you sell wheaties or doubleclick ads on a gossip blog.
Toke it man Toke it!!! There is nothing wrong with weed,it’s not has bad as alcohol and not deadly like alcohol and alcohol is legal. I say make alcohol illegal and legalize weed. If people would OPEN their eyes to that than this would be a non issue!!! And we all know this was not a first time offense…hopefully next time he is smart enough to do it in his own home with no camera’s…because people he will be tokin it again!!!

I don’t think he’s so bright either. Kind of seems like he’s heading down the wrong path..But doesn’t anyone remember a few years back he got a DUI? He appologized then and I thought he learned his lesson, but doesn’t seem like it. He should be held accountable for his actions, he’s a top level athlete and he knows the rules.
okay the dude smoked some weed. Do you know how many people smoke pot? If anyone has smoked pot, they know, it is not even remotely close to taking drugs like ecstasy, mushrooms, heroin, meth or even drinking alcohol… they are completely different levels. I totally agree that alcohol is a more dangerous drug than marijuana. I can’t believe its such a huge deal to some people.
Smoking weed is hardly “heading down the wrong path”. I know plenty of normal, hard working, responsible, intelligent and professional individuals that smoke pot from time to time.
I’d like to add, I don’t even smoke weed at this point in my life but I certainly don’t have a problem with other people doing it.

okay, some friends of mine were actually at this party. there were security guards outside of the party making sure people DIDN’T bring cameras into the place but apparently one got it. they thought it was weird that security was at the party until they got inside and saw him there.
my friends said there was definitely some serious bong-passing and phelpsie-poo was right in the middle of it, not to mention a high stakes game of beer pong (apparently the stakes got to be as high as $3000). he can deny all he want, but…really?
