TomKat Does ‘The New York Times Style Magazine’
Step back in time

The happily married Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are each featured individually on the cover and in the pages of the new Reinvention issue of The New York Times Style Magazine (not to be confused with the mere New York Times Magazine) this week. In coverphotos that pay homage to actors and actresses of Hollywood’s Golden Age, TomKat each get TWO of thier own magazine covers … cuz they’re just that big, y’all:

With such high profiles nowadays it appears Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are both now too big to appear on the same front cover. The couple have such star appeal that they have each been given the full-on Forties glamour treatment – and their own individual covers for T: The New York Times Style Magazine. This week’s Reinvention issue shows Katie with curled hair and elegant gowns – evoking Hollywood’s ultimate heroines such as Rita Hayworth, Lana Turner and Veronica Lake. With his upturned collar and his side-parted slicked hair, Tom looks every bit the war-time hero. The Forties fashion spread has been selected to promote his latest film Valkyrie in which he plays German aristocrat Colonel Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg who led a plot to blow up Adolf Hitler in 1944. The movie, directed by Usual Suspects writer Bryan Singer, has been created to showcase Cruise’s acting talents and hopefully revive his career which has gone off course in recent years. In the accompanying interviews, the couple open up about the dynamics of their high-profile relationship. Katie tells the publication: “There’s a misperception about me that I just became this wallflower, this woman who doesn’t have any control of her life. And that’s pretty wrong. From the very beginning, I’ve made choices in my life that have been very strong.” For his part, Tom reminisces about their early romance and admits he bought Katie an engagement ring shortly after their first date in 2005. “I knew I wanted to marry Kate when I met her,” he says. “After our very first date, I was sure. At one point, I thought she was going to ask me to marry her first and I cut her off by changing the subject. I wanted to ask her.”

Okay … wanting to buy an engagement ring after the first date does sound a bit creepy but in the world of TomKat … meh, it makes sense. There is still a lot about this couple that weirds me out (and always has from the beginning) but they appear to be making a successful go at a relationship and still seem very happy committed to one another. I admit I never thought it would last and yet, here they are. Normally I would balk at the need for individual magazine covers but these photos are so amazing, I can’t even complain. After the jump, check out the other two alternate magazine covers as well as a few pics from inside the mag AND video interviews with Tom and Katie — yeah, The New York Times Style Magazine went ALL OUT for these two …

Again, it’s hard to hate on these two when their photos look so stunning. Katie‘s photos are flat-out beautiful. She makes a great 40′s glam starlet. Here are a few individual pics of TomKat from inside the mag:

The styling, the lighting the poses … this is a very hot spread. I love it. I can almost forget how cruiseazy these two have been in recent years. There is something about the stoic, staticness of the photos that makes one forget all the Scientology and/or possibly robotic child stuff. They look great.

Here are video interviews with TomKat that accompany the photospread and magazine coverstories … first up, Katie Holmes:

And then Tom Cruise:

The black & white is a nice effect. I dunno … if they keep up this level of normalcy, they might actually become normal one day. All in all, tho, I have to admit that I am in total love with this elaborate feature in The New York Times Style Magazine. What do y’all think? Hit, Miss, Other?

I have to say………as nutty as Tom is……..I do like him…….just like his manner of speaking, his smile……..ugh…..maybe because he is an icon of my generation……..eh, who knows……but it is nice to see him and her speaking. I know I know….he is a wicked control freak and a totally crizazy person……but I really wish them the best!

these two are almost as boring at britney spears. all of us would look this good if we had the right photographer.

  7. Angela says:

Ack… Katie needs to learn how to interview. Her skills suck. She constantly looks up and around.. she makes me sea-sick.

  8. Joanne says:

Monica – I don’t get it either!? – they strike me as two incredibly boring (geeks) who are trying so hard to be edgy, cool and interesting … It’s just so fake – and yet Tom has somehow, once again … made it onto the ‘most interesting person’ of the year list? I think he pays BIG money to certain people for all the unwarranted hype he receives … and without a doubt he has killed Katie’s once promising film career.

I miss the cool Katie of pre-Cruise days. I don’t recognize the woman she has become under Tom’s influence. Tom lost me at the couch jumping incident. That’s where he showed his true crazy. I wonder what Katie’s family must think of the whole transformation of Katie into Mrs. Tom Cruise.

  10. Francesca says:

I have been in love with Tom Cruise since I first saw Risky Business. I HATED when he was with Nicole, she seemed too uptight for him. I did have a problem with the age difference thing when Katie and Tom first got together, but how can anyone deny them now… they seem completely devoted to one another. I, for one, am rooting for them to be another Paul Newman/Joanne Woodward type couple.

And the pictures are just GORGEOUS!
