The 2008 Screen Actors Guild Award Nominations Have Been Announced
The usual suspects

Last week we learned which movies and which actors garnered nominations for the upcoming Golden Globe Awards and today we learn which movies and actors nabbed themselves noms for the Screen Actors Guild Awards this year as those nominations were announced here in LA this morning. Not surprising, the group of movies that have been buzzing with rumors of Oscar noms managed to be nominated for SAG awards … as well as the late Heath Ledger, who continues to rack up accolades for his stunning performance as The Joker in this summer’s blockbuster film Batman: The Dark Knight:

The Catholic school drama “Doubt” led contenders Thursday for the Screen Actors Guild Awards with five nominations, including honors for Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis. The late Heath Ledger also earned a supporting-actor nomination, whose maniacal turn as the Joker in “The Dark Knight” has made him an Academy Awards front-runner. The Batman blockbuster also had a nomination for best stunt ensemble. Streep has a lead-actress nomination, while Hoffman, Adams and Davis are competing in supporting categories for “Doubt,” a war-of-wills tale between an old-school nun and a progressive priest. “Doubt” also has a nomination for overall cast performance, along with the romantic fantasy “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” the Richard Nixon saga “Frost/Nixon,” the gay-rights drama “Milk” and the poor-boy-makes-good tale “Slumdog Millionaire.” Kate Winslet grabbed two nominations, best actress for the domestic drama “Revolutionary Road” and supporting actress for the Holocaust-themed story “The Reader.” Other best-actress nominees were: Anne Hathaway, “Rachel Getting Married”; Angelina Jolie, “Changeling”; and Melissa Leo, “Frozen River.” Nominated for best actor were: Richard Jenkins, “The Visitor”; Frank Langella, “Frost/Nixon”; Sean Penn, “Milk”; Brad Pitt, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”; and Mickey Rourke, “The Wrestler.” The 15th annual SAG Awards will air live on TNT and TBS Jan. 25, four weeks before the Academy Awards.

Of this reported list of nominees there don’t seem to be any surprises … I think we’re getting a good feel for which movies and actors are likely to secure nominations for the Academy Awards (which will be announced next month). So many of my favorite films this year are all vying for the big awards that I think I’ll be pretty happy with whichever films win the big ones … but I am really, really pulling for Heath Ledger to first, be nominated for an Academy Award and second, to win his nomination. Of the supporting performances I’ve seen this year, no one else comes close to surpassing his amazing performance in The Dark Knight. While some may dismiss Ledger‘s posthumous nominations as pity or some other ridiculous notion, I honestly feel that he turned in an Oscar-worthy performance. At the very least, he is sure to win one of these major awards that he has already been nominated for. His loss is still so sad, this would be a very fitting and well-deserved way to honor his memory. I guess we’ll see. I would hate to be nominated against Heath Ledger… because you know you aren’t going to stand a chance. Even if someone else had a better performance, I am sure voting committees will vote for him because other actors that are still living will continue to have great performances. Especially with SAG, where it’s the actors who are voting. Not to take anything away from his performance. It was stellar… but I am sure it’s in the bag for him.

I’m so excited Anne Hathaway was nominated. I’ve always been such a fan of hers b/c she is a talented actress and just seems like a really cool person with a good head on her shoulders. She’s made some smart career choices, and I think its awesome to see her nominated and put in the same company as other well respected actresses.

I don’t think Id ever watch the Oscars again if Heath doesn’t win/get nominated
They seem to have this pattern they try to stick to, movies about (Insert oppressed group here) struggling to gain (Some sort of right) in (Insert war/conflict).

And there is no getting around it, the only performance Ive seen in the last 5 years that actually deserves an Oscar, is Heaths. If they snub him for Benjamin Button or some crap, its going to be the Star Wars thing all over again. They’re already going down hill, screwing over the goddamn Batman would be the nail xD

I don’t want to sound harsh or mean but I don’t really understand the whole Heath Leger award thing. While I will admit thast he gave a once-in-a-lifetime perfoprmance of the Joker, it’s not really a role I would think of when thinking of these awards. So many before him have played that part (I’m partial to Jack Nickolson’s myself) and no one thought to pay attention. I’m truely sorry he is no longer with us because he was a fine actor but I don’t think this is a role he would have been nominated for if he were alive. I understand people don’t want to forget him but giving away awards should be for those who gave the performances that deserve them. Again he did a fine job but it was a freaking Batman movie! My questrion is whether or not the people doing the nominating would have thought of him had he not passed away.
