‘Skins’: The Next Generation

Meet the new class
December 29th, 2008

Yesterday I posted my list of my fave movies and TV shows for 2008 and I listed Skins as my #1 pick of the year. I’m not entirely sure when the series originally aired in the UK but the first two seasons were broadcast on BBC America this year and immediately won my heart. Frank, witty and incredibly real, Skins follows the intermingling lives of a group of young friends as they try to get thru school, romance and varying degrees of drug use pretty much like all teenage kids are wont to do. The second season of Skins ended with many of the principle characters heading off to university or to make their way in the big city … but a third season is on the way, scheduled to being airing in the UK very soon. Here is our first look at the new cast of season three — meet Effy, Thomas, Cook and Pandora:

Here is Naomi, Freddie, Katie, Emily (they’re twins), JJ and Karen:

This is BY FAR the most entertaining show I’ve seen all year … it beats the hell out of the drama we get on Gossip Girl. Trust me, if you like GG you’ll love Skins. I urge those of you here in the US who haven’t seen the series to check it out on BBC America. I can only hope that we’ll be getting season 3 of Skins here in the US sometime in 2009 … I’m not sure I can wait that long to watch the next season.

    LOVE SKINS!

  2. Gaby Says:

Man now I want to start watching it…I have BBC America but I don’t think they are showing that show on it till January…I think I might just DVR it LOL

  3. geana Says:

i love this show!! its even better when they sub title it for you when you have no idea what these people are saying!!

  4. Andrew Says:

    I LOVE SKINS.

It is honestly one of the best shows on TV and I am so excited for this third season to start.

I am glad that even though this is a whole new cast and expectations are exceedingly high, we have Effy to look forward to. I loved her character last season and I cannot wait to see all of the trouble she stirs up this coming season!

  5. ME Says:

Is Pandora played by the same actress that portrayed her in Effy’s episode in season 2?! Looks like a different actress in the picture!! I’m gonna miss Cassie like you would not believe!! And why the hell do you need subtitles, us English dont speak that badly haha!!

  6. Steve Says:

S2 just ended, and I’m already dying for the third to start. but it hasn’t even started airing in the UK yet, and it obviously starts there before it get’s here. I’ll die lol

  7. Bridget Says:

I am so glad Trent that you’re championing Skins, it’s seriously the best thing on TV right now, and for me, the best thing on TV ever. I didn’t even know that you could watch it in America!
As a 17 year old Londoner (and London is so much crazier than Bristol, where Skins is set), I can honestly say that us Brits are pretty much like the Skins lot… sad, odd, funny, but true. It’s just so refreshing for British teens to be portrayed in a real, true-to-life way.
If anyone’s looking for something similar but a bit more gritty, try watching ‘Kidulthoo’d or ‘Adulthood’ both brilliant British films.

  8. Freddy Says:

people post them on youtube almost immediately after they air and they don’t seem to get pulled – plus you can find the xmas specials and a bunch of other fun Skins mini eps. you cant get unless your in the UK. I printed out the list of them from wikipedia and checked them off as i watched (there are quite a few) !!! Enjoy

  9. irma Says:

Does anyone know if the seasons are on DVD?

  10. sugar Says:

YES! Wow the new cast is lookin’ pretty fine. I’m so excited for the new season… I got absolutely nothing done while i watched both seasons online. Incredible. HOPEFULLY they’ll air the new eppys online as soon as its out in the UK. eeeeeks!

  11. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

@irma — not sure about DVD but they are available on iTunes here in the US

  12. JoZee Says:

I was so happy when BBCAm started to broadcast Skins but was sourly disappointed with the censorship and the subtitles…I mean really now with the subtitles, we speak English, and I don’t believe any other shows on BBCAm are subtitled. And t hey were usually just random.

What I loved most about the show was how Brits handled it, the pure rawness of it, I hate to admit it but I downloaded them moments after they aired in the UK. I honestly couldn’t NOT watch it. I’m hoping to have my “brother” in London send me the brit-version DVDs (both seasons out on DVD btw in the UK) and put my multi-region player to some good use.

Thanks for finally recognizing Skins, it took EW until the s2 finale to finally give it some sort of recognition.

  13. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

@JoZee — honestly, I kinda like the subtitles … there are a few US shows that I wish were subtitled. the censorship isn’t too bad, IMHO … the only word they censor out is “fuck” … they actually keep all the semi-nudity intact

  14. Jake Says:

Hmm I wonder what amazing advert they will create to promote the series this time ^^ I’m glad Effy is still part of the cast Karen looks interesting as do the twins I can’t wait to find out about them all. Yep it’s the same irritating Pandora xD Really is the best show ever the new cast members have HUGE boots to fill though.

  15. Traci Says:

According to Amazon the region 1 dvd comes out next month. Or you could just hack a region 1 dvd player, or buy an all region one and get it on the original region 2 dvd.

Or if you can watch dvds on your computer, it might be able to switch back and forth between regions, though you can usually only do it a certain number of times before you get stuck with one.

More dvds should be all region.

  16. Portia Says:

I LOVE Skins. i’m so sad it’s ended, but these pics have me too excited about the new season! i’d really love to see more of jal, tony, maxxie, and anwar, but i guess i hafta let them go…and umm is it just me or is this group a hell of a lot more prettified than the original group? whatevs. and yes, Skins puts Gossip Girl to shame.

  17. moi Says:

It will be interesting… I absolutley loved Chris, Sid and Cassie (more so in the first season), but seen as it’s a whole new cast (except for Effy) I will definatley give it a shot.

Aren’t the cast on S1&2 all amazing actors! They all have incredibly bright futures ahead of them

  18. Jake Says:

Yeah Portia they do, guessing it’s just the promo shots we will see them in their human form in the episodes with bad skin and cracked out eyes xD

  19. beth Says:

    MY FAV SHOW THIS YEAR

  20. maddie Says:

I was channel surfing on BBC America about a month ago and caught the “Michelle” episode from series 2, where they go camping. Then I watched the rest of the episodes, was a little confused b/c I didn’t know the backstory with Tony/Michelle/Sid/Cassie, but I literally just finished watching the whole two series online… so good! I recommend finding them on youtube or other sources b/c some of the music changes on BBC America and I prefer it uncensored.
I’m glad that Effy is on so maybe we’ll still get updates on the lives of the original gang.

  21. bkiddo Says:

okay. i tried this. i really wanted to like it. I dunno, i just couldnt though. Gossip Girl is much better. But they are different kinds of shows even if they both feature high schoolers.

  22. Mark Says:

You can see the full two seasons at http://www.youtube.com/richardf921

  23. Aidan Says:

I adore Skins and I like Effy well enough, but no one can replace Tony, Jal, Chris, and – my FAVES – Sid and Cassie. Sigh. I’ll still watch, and I’ll hope for the best.

  24. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

@Aiden — I totally agree! The original gang cannot be replaced … but I trust the amazing Skins writers will be able to take things in new directions with the new cast. Effy will be a great anchor and, I must admit, I really love Pandora ;)

  25. Kim*uk Says:

i love skins but sometimes it can be a little far fetched for the age they were, some of the antics bared more resemblance to the age of university students not sixth form/college students that they are portrayed as but gah i still love the show.

  26. Colette Says:

I’ve loved Skins since it first aired (early ‘07 I think), I can’t believe it’s shown outside of the UK but I guess most of the issues it deals with are pretty universal.

I have to say that I’ve been nervous for the third series since the end of the second as it has a real potential to turn rubbish over night (no Sid or Cassie!!!), but if the writers do pull it off then it should still be brilliant.

My personal highlight was the end of the first series where they are all singing along to wild world – genius.

  27. Lulu Says:

I just finished the first season! <3 it!!!!! Thanks for spotlighting this show.. Cassie is the BEST! :)

  28. mimi Says:

i LOVE skins, and yes, cassie is my favourite too!!!
    absolutely a fantastic show.

  29. maria liyana Says:

i looooove Mitch and Chris. :D I cried at the end.
