New Deets On The Proposed ‘Gossip Girl’ Spin-Off
Last Friday we learned that producers of Gossip Girl on The CW are planning to test the waters to see if a spin-off show is a feasible option for the television season next year. We were told that at least one of the show’s 9 major characters would be chosen to lead the new series … today, Star magazine informs us that TWO major characters have been selected to test the spin-off series waters:

In an effort to NOT spoil anything for anyone, I’ve put the pertinent information behind the cut below. I will offer this hint … the GG spin-off is lookin’ like it’s gonna be a prequel of some sort. After the jump, find out which two characters are reported to be the focus of the Gossip Girl spin-off …

A network insider says the spin-off will center around the younger lives of Blake Lively and Penn Badgely’s on-screen parents, played by Kelly Rutherford and Matthew Settle. “The show will focus on the early romance between Lily and Rufus,” says the insider. “It begins when they first meet, during a time when Rufus and his band are at the height of their career. The show will follow the high society and rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle in New York.” And GG fans need not worry! The source denies rumors that an original cast member will be leaving the show to join the spin-off. Instead, “two new actors will be hired to play the young Lily and Rufus. Producers are planning to introduce the new couple during a flashback scene in an upcoming episode of Gossip Girl.” The insider adds the new show is slated to start filming in February.
Um … I mean … cute idea … but … I dunno. I really like the interplay of drama between the Lily and Rufus characters on the show now (especially in light of the way things ended on this week’s ep … holy cliffhanger) but it seems weird to me that we’ll be watching the love story of these two characters from the beginning concurrently with the way things turn out with them in the present. It’s confusing. I think it would make more sense to base any proposed spin-off on a character or characters that can branch off and take the drama in a new direction (possibly offering the opportunity to cross-over the two shows again in the future). I’m really not sure that a prequel series on the young Lily and Rufus has enough meat for an entire series. I’d have to see what The CW has in mind before I make a final determination but at this point … I’m not feeling this idea. What do y’all think? Good idea/Bad idea??

This is a dumb idea. So not on board here.

Odd… I mean, I guess Lilly’s drama has been discussed many times, and obviously there was enough for a huge folder for Bart, but I agree. The past and present of those characters at the same time? Confusing and, well, not so interesting. Why worry about showing what happened then when we know how it turns out?
December 11th, 2008 at 10:12 am
it was only suppossedly twenty years ago so two different actors playing those roles just seems stupid. and i agree about the cross-over idea. they should just do one big flashback ep and get it out of their system.
December 11th, 2008 at 10:12 am
btw, this week’s show was SO AMAZING!!!
December 11th, 2008 at 10:13 am
well…im assuming we would finally find out why she was in that hospital?
to me it seems to early for any kind of spin off. yes im in love with the show but, i dunno just to early.
December 11th, 2008 at 10:14 am
if they play up the early 90’s alt. music scene it could be cute…but I’m worried the actors that play the early versions of Lily and Rufus wont hold up to their counterparts….
December 11th, 2008 at 10:14 am
does anybody actually watch this show?
December 11th, 2008 at 10:15 am
ps: this show needs more homos.
I’d probably watch it then.
December 11th, 2008 at 10:16 am
adult versions of new characters from the past could show up on gg…
December 11th, 2008 at 10:41 am
;-) I would watch this show….
December 11th, 2008 at 11:00 am
Ew.
I think I speak for a vast majority of GG fans when I say that my least favourite part of every episode is the stale inter-parental romances and drama. Hopefully if they get their own show and story, then there will be less of them taking up precious minutes in my GG.

I agree that watching present and past at the same time is kinda confusing, not to mention how it turns out…but it’s based on books. It’s not like we can’t read ahead. ;) (Though, I guess that’s why the producers are now saying they are not going to follow the books anymore….eh).

nicloe, the reason she was in the hospital was to have Rufus’s baby. The last line(wee maybe not the last last line but what ever,I already erased from dvr)was him asking her “just tell me was it a boy or a girl”
December 11th, 2008 at 11:02 am
we=well sorry ya’ll
December 11th, 2008 at 11:03 am
Do. Not. Want.
December 11th, 2008 at 11:13 am
ummm… it will be the same story as Dan and Serena. Hello? poor boy rich girl. and what, a 90s Gossip Girl narrating? lol
R and L dont roll off the tongue so well either
but i actually would watch the show as long as they do it right with super hot ppl. but honestly, i cant think of anymore drama. can you?
December 11th, 2008 at 11:45 am
i would watch this
December 11th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
Wouldnt that basically give the new series an end date? Because they’d have to stop where GG starts. Its alot of time, but is it time we really care about???
December 11th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
Wow how about NO. A spin-off when the show just started and isnt getting stellar ratings? LAME.
December 11th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
Early 90’s alt music scene? That was like 10 year ago! I think it would be more like the early 80’s. If they did it kind of right, that would be cool. It’s certainly a mythological time for NYC. I can’t really picture them pulling it off, but if they did….
December 11th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
I don’t think this will be a success.
December 11th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
I don’t think it will work out, but if it does-more power to them.
December 11th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
she was in a hospital cause she had a abortion
December 11th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
honestly, i’d watch any gossip girl spin off….unless it followed vanessa. i can’t stand her.
December 11th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
If we’re going to see a ridiculous prequel series, can’t it be that Robin show the CW was going to do? That sounded potentially fun, whereas this just seems lame. At least they won’t be taking any of the core cast off of Gossip Girl for this.
December 11th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
sooo not cool.. this is a horrible idea! i really couldnt care less about lily and rufus so a whole show about them does not seem interesting in the slightest.
omg this weeks episode was amaaazing tho.. one of my faves! so intense.. i actually cried when chuck was in blairs room crying!
December 11th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
you have to really think it out before judging. it wouldnt JUST be about these two obviously, they would have their friends as characters. Allison Humphrey would have to be a character. Eleanor could be a character. Cece would be a character. i think it could be fun! a GG show set in the 80s/90s!
WOO

this spinoff isn’t happening: http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/watch_with_kristin/b72917_gossip_girl_spinoff_rumors_not_true.html
It was originally an idea for verizon-sponsored webisodes, but now they’re doing those about Dorota — and no spinoff plans are in the works.
December 11th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
kitkat, you are a jerk. Thanks for spoiling that for me.
December 11th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
hrmmm.. it SOUNDS like a good idea… and i think i’d watch it.. but what kind of actor would want to sign up for a show that they know is gonna end in a season or two. becoz the story is BOUND to catch up to the present day sooner or later… there’s only so much they could write about.
December 11th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
theyre kinda dull now, but it might be interesting to see all the drama that happened before, new york´s rock scene, groupies, high society snobs, whats not to like?
December 11th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
I’m part of the minority that thinks this is a GREAT idea. C’mon, 80’s, 90’s, NYC, high society meets rock scenes with classic denied romance, teenage preganancy and loony bins? Its awesome. Lilly & Rufus have the best (and most romantic) plot of the show and with quite a backstory. Distance yourself from the current actors and picture it with fresh new (and better be good) actors and a whole new supporting cast of friends/enemies…it has the potential to be a great show.
December 11th, 2008 at 5:38 pm
PS – I say the current Lilly should narrate.
December 11th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
I really don’t even watch GG, but if this has the potential to be a weekly “Reality Bites,” I might start…
December 11th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
i LOVE the show but this is a BAD BAD HORRIBLE idea!
this can’t work for an entire series. why not just show us this storyline in flashbacks on GossipGirl???
ugh…
December 11th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
FK…
Someone doesn’t know what year it is.
20 years ago would be 1988…
Plus it wouldn’t be exactly 20. It’d probably be a little less than 20 years ago.
December 12th, 2008 at 2:47 am
i’d probably watch it, cos they must’ve had complicated lives according to their lives as they are now.
but it’d never top GG.
December 12th, 2008 at 8:13 am
she’s was in the hospital because she HAD the baby! Then put it up for adoption/orphanage. Ya don’t need a hospital stay for an abortion!
December 12th, 2008 at 8:51 am
The last line was ” Is it a boy or a girl” you wouldn’t know that if she had an abortion.
I love the show- i’d have to see what is further in store with the flashback.
I guess this KILLS any chance of Serena and Dan getting back together (since they share a blood sibling) ew.
December 12th, 2008 at 10:19 am
I’m not sure this is spin-off worthy. I would love to see a mini-series when GG is on break or like a CW movie about it though.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
Jenny Spin-Off would be better, since there are books based on it.
December 12th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
so dumbbb.
ughhh
