My Top Music Of 2008

The TV Guide
December 27th, 2008

Here is my list of my top picks in music for 2008 … sadly, this wasn’t a great year for music. As I sat down to go over my fave releases of the year, I found that there wasn’t much to choose from. But, even tho the pickin’s are slim that doesn’t take away from the quality of the music that was released this year. Here, in reverse order are my fave albums of the year:

In the #10 position, Beyoncé’s I Am …:

Altho I didn’t love every single track on this album, much of it is really fun and very memorable. Honestly, for Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) alone the album is a hit. I may not be totally on board with the whole Sasha Fierce thing but as long as Beyoncé keeps bringin’ the jams like the ones on this album, I think I can get used to it.

At #9, Jason Mraz’s We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things.:

I’ve been a minor Jason Mraz fan for a while now but this album really won me over to Team Mraz. I must admit, I didn’t really pay that much attention to him before he started blogging on My Space but once he got my attention, I was hooked. I’ve yet to listen in full to Jason’s other albums but if this one is any indication, I think I’m gonna like what I hear. Additionally, Mraz just published his own book of Polaroid photos … which wins my heart in other ways as well.

At #8 is Juliana Hatfield’s How To Walk Away:

Juliana always comes at us with great music and this album is proof positive that she’s still got it. For me, this album was an even better treat because I ordered it from her official website and it came packed with a bonus disc of demos that were recorded with the album. I really wish more people knew about Juliana … I think she appeals to so many people. I’m just glad that she continues to make music because discs like this one are always welcome on my iPod.

In the #7 position is the Ryan Adams and the Cardinals album Cardinology:

Ryan Adams releases music almost on a daily basis and, amazingly, it’s all good. While I wasn’t too crazy about Easy Tiger, I really loved Cardinology. My only regret is that the album is too short. I wish there were about 3 more songs on the disc but, knowing Ryan, I’m sure it won’t be long before we get a whole new disc of stuff to enjoy.

At #6 is the new Leona Naess album Thirteens:

I was SHOCKED when I learned that Leona Naess had released a new album months before I heard about it … but was very happily surprised. Thirteens is a great album of somber and poignant tunes … and comes with 13 bonus tracks that are still downloadable HERE. One can never have too much Leona Naess … the hits just keep on comin’.

After the jump, check out my Top 5 Fave Albums of 2008 including my fave of the bunch AND my list of Top 10 Singles of the Year

At #5 is Ghosts I-IV by Nine Inch Nails:

This year, NIN finished out their record contract and in celebration released an epic 4 disc collection of instrumental music online, on their terms. While NIN is known for the aggressive style of their music, it is their quieter more melodic music that really surprises listeners. On this years Lights in the Sky Tour, the band unplugged themselves for a portion of the performance to play select Ghosts tracks on regular instruments — stand up bass, xylophone, etc. — which was, by far, my fave portion of the show. Disc 1 of Ghosts is available online for FREE download but I cannot stress enough how amazing the whole collection is as a whole.

At #4 is Britney Spears’s Circus:

Britney Spears is back and her album Circus is a true return to form. Of the 12+ songs on the disc (including the bonus tracks), there are only a couple that I could live without. My Baby, while sweet, is just a bad pop ballad and Mmm Papi is just bad. The rest of the songs, tho, are incredible … with Phonography, Amnesia, Quicksand and Circus as my faves. The disc is really well-rounded and is proof positive that Britney is, indeed, back!

In the #3 position is Pop Up by Yelle:

Yelle has been called the French M.I.A. but I just call her fabulous. The entire album is in French but that does not take away from the infectious nature of the songs. I found my self singing along (poorly) with the songs almost after just one listen. I’m telling you, if the album had been recorded in English she would’ve made a huge splash here in the US with this disc. Altho this album was released digitally last year, it was released domestically in 2008 and quickly became one of my fave albums. I’m not even sure how I heard about Yelle … but, I promise, if you give her a try you’ll prolly love her as much as I do.

My #2 album of the year is the self-titled debut album from Santogold:

Santogold has, too, been compared to M.I.A. but to me she sounds more like a modern version of Siouxsie Sioux of Siouxsie and the Banshees. Her lyrics are so smart, her singing is so beautiful and her style is just cool as hell. If I were to compare Santogold to M.I.A. it would only be in that they are both extremely talented, know how to craft songs around fun beats and will prolly be putting out amazing music for years to come. Santogold’s debut album is an impressive first step in, what I hope will be, a very successful career.

And my fave album of 2008 is The Slip by Nine Inch Nails:

While most NIN albums follow a unified epic theme, The Slip is much less organized and offers tunes that can exist on their own. While I really loved the whole concept of their previous studio album Year Zero (which, incidentally, was my #1 album of 2007) I think I like the pared down nature of this album just as much. As I mentioned before, NIN ended their contract with their record company and are now in a position to release their own music when and how they like … for The Slip, Trent Reznor decided to give the album away to fans for free writing, “This one’s on me.” If you haven’t yet, click HERE to download this album in full for free. This album, by far, was my fave release of the year. I can only hope that NIN will be comin’ at us again soon with a new batch of music in the coming year.

Here are my fave singles of 2008:

  1. BeyoncéSingle Ladies (Put A Ring On It)
  2. Britney SpearsWomanizer
  3. Lady Gaga featuring Colby OdonisJust Dance
  4. Mariah CareyTouch My Body

  8. Sara BareillesLove Song

  1. James Says:

Trent, I’m a little disappointed that Lady GaGa isn’t on here! I, for one, thought the album “The Fame” was quite amazing!

    : (

I haven’t really listened to all of these albums but I’ll give them a try.

I am shocked that “SIngle Ladies (Put a Ring on it)” is your favorite single of ‘08. The song is genius, but it does get a little annoying after awhile…

Have you listened to Kanye’s new album?

  2. lambman Says:

you really prefer Warwick Avenue over Rockferry and Mercy? strange

  3. James Says:

    Oh, I forgot.
I am surprised anything Rihanna related isn’t on here as well. Oh, and Madonna’s Hard Candy isn’t on here either.

  4. halifaxhoney Says:

I was also surprised that Warwick Avenue made it to your singles list. Also surprised that Lady GaGa didn’t make your list. I really enjoy your eclectic taste in music, it’s similar to mine.

  5. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

@halifaxhoney — OY! I totally forgot about Just Dance! While I was really disappointed with The Fame, her single was the shizz … I’ll have to amend my list. Regarding Warwick Ave — it is seriously my fave ballad of the year … it is so sad and so pretty!

  6. Ken Says:

Amen to NIN taking two spots on your top ten (and on mine as well) — Amazing albums, amazing tour (my first time seeing them, although I’ve been a fan for a long, long while).

I’m also very glad to see Yelle and Santogold taking prime spots on the list!

  7. Freddie Says:

If you haven’t listened to these yet, you might enjoy ‘em:

    - Sara Bareilles – Little Voice
    - Eric Hutchinson – Sounds Like This
    - Brandy – Human
    - Kings Of Leon – Only By The Night
    - Gabriella Cilmi – Lessons To Be Learned
    - Counting Crows – Saturday Nights And Sunday Mornings
    - Gavin Rossdale – Wanderlust

  8. Jordan Says:

You said Circus was your favorite song on Circus so why didn’t it make the list?

Also I downloaded single ladies(put a ring on it) but I still can’t get into it I think Britney has my favorite track of the year weather it’s Circus or Womanizer I don’t know

  9. Jordan Says:

Kanye’s 808’s & Heartbreaks is probally the best album

  10. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

@Jordan — I really do love the Circus track but as far as singles goes, I think I’ve spent more time with Womanizer which is why it made my list over Circus

  11. Farishta Says:

Wow, I am sad that you did not include MGMT. One of the best bands of the year. I do agree with most of your choices though.

  12. Cherrylips Says:

I FUCKING LOVE MMM PAPI IT TOOK ME LIKE 6 LISTENS TOO BUT I DO I FUCKING LOVE IT & and am I the only person who hated singles ladies its crap sorry beyonce but If I were a boy is an amazing song

  13. Jerome Says:

I love Beyonce in general but Single Ladies really didn’t do much for me (I liked If I Were a Boy much better). I am a little bit obsessed with Britney (even though I’m a 31 year old gay…or because of it) and would put Womanizer and Circus at 1 and 2 respectively, and her album would be my no. 1 of the year. I also agree with one of the above posters that Brandy’s Human is one of the year’s (unexpected) best.

  14. Monica Says:

Love Warwick Avenue! Such a bittersweet breakup song. I am so glad it made your list because I thought it didn’t get enough credit this year.

Love Santogold too! That’s an awesome album so thanks for giving it some love. Just Dance was definitely my favorite single of the year – too damn catchy!

  15. janelle Says:

I personally just need Jason Mrazs ‘Im yours’and I’m set for the year! :)

  16. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

@Farishta — I did get MGMT’s album but honestly didn’t listen to it enough to get into it … am I missing out?

  17. La Princesa Says:

Jason Mraz was my surprise of the year. I actually listened to that disc front to back over and over and over, which I’d never done with his stuff before…

  18. Sarah Says:

Yelle is good! They played her music on The Hills when they went to Paris.

  19. JeniLee Says:

I so agree with you about My Baby and Mmm Papi!

I do also love love love Shattered Glass and Trouble though :) And Unusual You is phenomenal as well….and Circus is in my top 3 Britney songs EVER! Amazing!

  20. swiss80's Says:

Trent, Believe Me, You Have To Listen to MGMT, the entire album is the zaniest electro pop with enough soul to make you chill and an abundance of rythm and grooves to make you move … music does not get better than that

  21. nicole Says:

Jerome i couldnt agree more with the Brandy CD..it was a great CD.
Trent…i love your taste in music it’s all over the place =)

  22. Ken Says:

After thinking about it, the only albums that I’m disappointed aren’t on the list are Hot Chip “Made in the Dark”, Portishead “Third”, and Erykah Badu “New Amerykah Part One”… And yes, MGMT is at least worth a listen, although it didn’t turn out to be my cup of tea.

  23. Ashley Says:

You completely overlooked Kings of Leon! They have such amazing music and their older stuff is just as good, if not better than the newer ones!

  24. swiss80's Says:

MGMT is what Brian Wilson & The Beach Boys would have sounded like if they emerged in the early 80’s.

Here’s My List, & What I Recommend to You

    1. Moby- Ooh Yeah & Everyday It’s 1989

    2) Metallica – Broken, Beat And Scarred
    1) Ladyhawke – My Delirium

  28. Taylor Says:

I’m glad you added Give It 2 Me on your singles list! As much of a fan I am of M-Dolla, I thought Hard Candy wasn’t her best. It’s taken me a long time to really enjoy (the first time I heard it I HATED it) but it grew on me. My tastes this year really changed, and I started loving anything that Pharrell Williams put his hands on…Give It 2 Me is the best single I’ve heard this year I think. It’s a really unique, crazy dance song and so eclectic. The synths, the drums, the snares, all the beats come together to create a song that stands out from all the other pop hits this year. Britney may have had her great comeback, but I think Madonna’s original flair for beats on Hard Candy proves she’s still with the times.

  29. Jen Says:

Definitely check out Eric Hutchinson. He has a Jason Mraz type of vibe, but he’s slightly different. Oh, and he’s hilarious and awesome in concert. My favorites are All Over Now, Food Chain, and It Hasn’t Been Long Enough.

Oh, Trent you HAVE to listen to MGMT’s album: Oracular Spectacular. It was the best album of 2008, HANDS DOWN. And if you get into that album, give their “Time to Pretend EP” album a listen, it’s also wonderful. You’ll end up editing this list to make MGMT number one!

  35. Noelle Says:

Also, I don’t know if you ever listened to the band Bright Eyes, but the lead singer, Conor Oberst released an album this year that is on a lot of of top 2008 albums lists. I think it’s AMAZING, so I highly recommend it! It’s self-titled: Conor Oberst.

Another nomination here for MGMT – great album!

  39. Melissa Says:

    Trent,

If you like Duffy you HAVE TO check out Adele if you don’t know her stuff already…. she’s far beyond Duffy, I love Duffy. I cannot stop playing her album 19, and shes even better live… going to see her on Jan 17th!

  40. Alli Says:

I’m with the people who’ve suggested Eric Hutchinson – his album is probably my favorite of the year. The All-American Rejects just came out with a new album too and I was shocked because I completely love it! Check those two out.

  41. Lisa Says:

No Killers? Human is alright, but the rest of Day and Age is solid.
I agree with everyone else about MGMT. Oracular Spectacular is amazing, they are definitely the break out artist of the year. Just sit back and listen to the album a couple of times and you’ll love it, it’s infectious.

  43. Meli Says:

I agree with Nine Inch Nails being number one on the list! I have been a fan for many years and trent (reznor) always does something wonderful!

  44. Lex Says:

    Oh lord
I’m pretty sure that Beyonce song is the worst song I have ever heard…….. ever.

  49. Chris Says:

My fave album of the year is Jenny Lewis’s Acid Tongue. I cannot get enough of her, and if you are lucky enough to live in LA you should catch one of her many shows, she puts on an amazing live performance. She just keeps putting out great music, whether with her band Rilo Kiley or her 2 solo albums or the other many projects she has had her hands in. If you don’t know her music, check it out!

I’m confused by the titles you gave as your faves on britneys cd… amnesia and quicksand? those titles aren’t on the tracklist… i think you mean blur by amnesia… but i can’t figure out the quicksand one!

I agree with you pretty much except for beyonce… only song of hers that ive found i like is if i were a boy. can’t stand her otherwise.

  57. Mel Says:

Kora!!! Skankenstein! Fab album… and MGMT… definately worth a listen!

I want the Santogold album so bad! I keep forgetting to pick it up ’cause I have so damn much to buy all the time! I also love Britney’s “Circus,” and your fav. tracks are also my favorites! They’re so incredible, such as “Quicksand,” “Amnesia,” “If U Seek Amy,” “Unusual You” and Blur.”

PS – I can’t believe you don’t have ROBYN on your list!!!

  60. Decameron Says:

Mmm I love me some mraz. This album is a funky great addition to his other stuff!!

  61. Stephanie Says:

I agree with everyone who is suggesting Adele if you like Duffy…listen to her right now!!!! she rules. I heard her song Hometown Glory on so you think you can dance, hehe, and now I am obsessed.
also, should I be ashamed that I like Mmm Papi?

  62. dianna Says:

I can listen to “a beautiful mess” on Jason mraz’s album over and over again! His other albums are great too!

  63. roo Says:

    Santogold is freaking amazing!

  64. Tobes Says:

I’m kinda surprised that P!nk never gets much credit on here. she’s pretty bad-ass! Her latest album is by far the most lyrically complex she’s ever done, and has SO many great songs on it. I suggest that those of you who haven’t checked it out… give it a whirl. It’s a GREAT album. And definitely with more artist cred (and not just performer cred) than Beyonce or Brit, not that I don’t love them both.

  65. Heather Says:

I agree Tobes. Pink’s album is amazing. I also love Santogold, Adele, Duffy and Brandy. Brandy’s album is fierce. It’s great to see her back on the music scene again.

  66. Lauren Says:

Kings of Leon DEFINITELY must be added to this list. Every song on their new album kicks ass. Also, My Morning Jacket is brilliant. I’m Amazed is the best song on the album. Don’t miss out on this one!

  67. R Says:

Santogold seems to be on everyone’s Top Album list. She deserves it, and is so much better than M.I.A. Congrats.

  68. Jason Says:

    Here’s mine Trent

    http://jasonmunoz.blogspot.com/2008/12/my-favorite-albums-of-2008.html

  69. Zane Says:

oh! and my favorite singles were:

    1. Santogold – LES Artistes
    2. MGMT – Kids
    3. Madonna – Give It 2 Me
    4. Lady Gaga – Just Dance
    5. M.I.A. – Paper Planes
    6. Beyonce – Single Ladies
    7. Duffy – Mercy
    8. Sam Sparro – Black and Gold
    9. Jason Mraz – I’m Yours
    10. Estelle – American Boy

Madonna’s album wasn’t her greatest, and even Britney’s “Circus” was great, but it’s no match for “Blackout.” Dragonette’s debut album was pop perfection, Jesse McCartney’s comeback as a more beat-based, sedutive, young Justin Timberlake. We’ve found a brand-new, original, different, fun artist – Lady Gaga. There’s also some things I hope to be looking forward to in 2009. A new record by Lily Allen, hopefully Goldfrapp will get back into the studio, Christina Aguilera’s new album, and who knows? Britney might even get back to recording to give her comeback even more fuel. Whatever happens, 2009 will for sure be a better year for music.

  70. Todd Says:

The most underrated album of the year is Little Jackie: The Stoop.
Such a shame, it’s completely perfect. Urge everyone to check it out.

I add votes for: MGMT, Goldfrapp(7th Tree) and Cold Copy: In Ghost Colours (album of the year).

Throw in Ladyhawke, Air France, Los Campesinos, Portishead and The Mae Shi.

  71. Renee Says:

Thanks for suggesting Yelle!! I’m always looking for good French music.

Also – love some of your song choices
Estelle & Kanye West – American Boy
    M.I.A. – Paper Planes
    Sara Bareilles – Love Song

  72. michelle Says:

    yelle is from 2007

  73. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

@michelle — as I said, her album was released digitally in 2007 but domestically here in the US in 2008
