Las Vegas Gets Buried In Snow
How’s this for some pretty shocking news to start out the day … Las Vegas, NV — the famous desert resort that was converted from an arid wasteland into America’s adult arcade/playground — got covered in SNOW yesterday and early this morning … and the forecast is for more snow to come. If this ain’t proof that the world’s ecosystem is going all haywire, then I don’t know what else is — talk about your inconvenient truths. Check out these amazing and mind boggling photos of a snow-covered Vegas:

A rare pre-winter storm brought Las Vegas its heaviest snowfall in nearly three decades, closing the airport and freeways as several inches coated marquees on the Las Vegas Strip and weighed down palm trees. The storm Wednesday and early Thursday also dumped snow on rain on much of southern California and parts of Nevada outside Las Vegas. The National Weather Service measured 3.6 inches of snow overnight at Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport, and meteorologist Jerome Jacques said about 2 inches was left before dawn on the ground near the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign. “Snow is not unknown in the Las Vegas valley. On average we get 1/2 inch of snow a year,” Jacques said. “But this amount made it a significant storm. We haven’t had this amount of snow since 1979

The weather service recorded 7.5 inches of snow at McCarran on Jan. 30-31, 1979. The snow Wednesday prompted the cancellation of all flights in and out of Vegas. Visitors parked and posed for pictures wearing hooded jackets. Other parts of Nevada were forecast to receive as much as 8 inches of snow in the second winter storm this week to drop snow on the desert city. Snowfall is common in nearby mountains hills, but not on the Strip or surrounding neighborhoods.
Wow! These are images that I never thought I’d ever see … the Las Vegas strip covered with snow. You know, it was cold in LV over the weekend when my friends and I were there but wasn’t anywhere near snow conditions. Here in LA last night, the temps. fell into the low 40s. I half expected to open my blinds this morning and find snow on the ground here as well. Right now, we’re only about 10 degrees away from freezing! Oy! I hope it’s warm or at least bearable wherever in the world YOU are today … cuz it’s cold here on the West Side. It really is beginning to look a lot like Xmas.

Live every day like it is your last. Crawl into a corner and cry.
December 18th, 2008 at 8:51 am
The snow on the palm tree made my day, especially since I’m headed out to start digging out of the 2+ feet of snow that fell in the last 24 hrs here as well. Thanks!
December 18th, 2008 at 8:59 am
Atlanta, GA checking in with 69degrees! Just had to say that, since I am usually so jealous of you in SoCal this time of year.;)
December 18th, 2008 at 9:08 am
Well I’m pretty sure it’s about 15 degrees here, with about 10 inches of snow comin tonight!! Gotta love the midwest!! I’m pretty sure I’d rather be in that 69 degree weather in GA!
December 18th, 2008 at 9:11 am
I can’t get over the weird weather happening this year.
December 18th, 2008 at 9:18 am
It is -35 here… I’m not sure what that is in Farinheite… but it is way colder here than SoCal.. DON”T COMPLAIN! lmao
December 18th, 2008 at 9:19 am
Holy crap, there is more snow in Vegas then here, and I’m from Canada. lol I never though I would say that.
December 18th, 2008 at 9:29 am
LMAO!!! this is amazing. I find it so hysterical when that happens to places like this!
From Edmonton, AB where it’s -22ºC (-7.6ºF) and STILL snowing at the moment. SUCK IT UP!! You could have it worse! lol
December 18th, 2008 at 9:33 am
All these record colds freak me out. Our planet is not ok…. :(
December 18th, 2008 at 9:35 am
wow lol…i dont think ive seen snow in vegas lol
December 18th, 2008 at 9:39 am
lmao Las Vegas, you call that snow?! lmao I’m sitting here in New York with a good foot coming at me tonight, and I already have a good two foot outside… had a 2 hour delay yesterday… Does California and other warm state have a snow delay/closing system, or do they just close and freak out?
December 18th, 2008 at 9:40 am
this is why the term “global warming” is misleading…people think it means that places are just gonna get warmer…uhhhh no!
December 18th, 2008 at 9:40 am
@DCMA Queen — LA shuts down/freaks out when it rains … seriously. If is snowed in LA, people would be leaping to their deaths from the Hollywood sign
December 18th, 2008 at 9:51 am
We had snow in New Orleans last week…lots of it. That hardly ever happens down here.
December 18th, 2008 at 9:57 am
It snowed here in Houston, Texas last Wednesday. Today, the forecast is expected to be near 80. No global warming my ass!!
December 18th, 2008 at 9:58 am
It was INCREDIBLE! I’ve lived here for quite some time, and we’ve never seen such a downpour. They closed all of the schools today for the first time because of a snow day.
December 18th, 2008 at 9:59 am
BTW, I don’t think anyone is complaining about the snow TJ and company, just making a note of it since it’s rarer that you think.
December 18th, 2008 at 10:03 am
We live about 90 miles south of Slots Vegas, and got a little snow storm ourselves. My family and I enjoyed it seeing as schools and some businesses closed early due to it. Snowball fights, snowmen and snow angels were on the to do list!
December 18th, 2008 at 10:04 am
Margie that’s what I thought too! It just weird!
I’m from Houston too and I post on our forum that we got snow and I go the same reaction.
People saying that’s nothing come up here!
No what I am saying is…it is RARE to see it and to the EAST of Houston it was A LOT!
Awesome pics of Las Vegas!!!!!!
December 18th, 2008 at 10:05 am
That is so scary! On Tuesday in N TX it got down to the low 20’s with wind chill in the teens and tomorrow it’s going to be 75. Everyone is getting sick.
December 18th, 2008 at 10:38 am
Summer - It was just plain weird and I’m glad no one freaked out over it. We just marveled over it and enjoyed it since it had been years since it snowed and probably will be years again for the next snowfal. Hm, scratch that, maybe sooner rather than later.
BTW, I’m in West Houston and it was really coming down.
December 18th, 2008 at 10:43 am
Here in the “D” it’s been in the teens for weeks & winter hasn’t even started! It’s freaking misery, at least now some of the rest of the country knows what it’s like to live in these parts! It freaking SUCKS!
December 18th, 2008 at 10:54 am
@Mrs. Shermender — UGH! that is so news I don’t want to hear … I’m flying back home next Monday night
December 18th, 2008 at 11:30 am
i’m from vegas and just recently moved… and we got snow a little bit the last two years but nothing that would stick… from what i hear the snow they just got is crazy from some friends i’m getting ready to see for myself
December 18th, 2008 at 11:48 am
I’m up in the 509 where we are at about 25 inches of snow on the ground and yes, there is more to come. Its insane! Our entire city is shut down!
December 18th, 2008 at 11:55 am
Meh. People forget that cycles in weather are very common, much like in the economy. This isn’t the first time it’s snowed in Vegas and it’s also not the first time the economy has gone under. Cycles are a normal part of the way the earth and society runs, I dunno why people are freaking out so much about either. Yes, global warming is an issue but I don’t think current weather conditions are a sign that the world is ending.
December 18th, 2008 at 11:57 am
Don’t get me wrong, obviously the recession and global warming are an issue but I just think that people are overlooking the fact that we have faced both before, in the past, and that these kinds of things are more than likely to cease and then reoccur again in the future.
December 18th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
So I guess it was global warming in 1979. Of course back then they thought we were headed for a mini ice age.
December 18th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
WOW! Never in a million would I have ever expected to see these pictures. This is so weird and disconcerting….
December 18th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
it’s pretty cool to see vegas covered in snow.
December 18th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
Ugh, the weather better not pull this stunt when I’m in Vegas for New Years! Well, the bright side is my champagne will stay chilled :o)
December 18th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
just a quick ice storm later tonight to add to our snow already
midwest weather sucksss
December 18th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
I guess what (rarely) happens in Vegas, stays (on the ground) in Vegas. tee hee hee.
I think it’s time to stop saying “global warming” and only say “climate change” - the latter is maybe more accurate, while the former creates unfair expectations in the middle of December!

I’m from Argentina and we are at 95/96 here hahahahaha. It’s been like this since November, you get a week and a half of this incredible heat then a couple of days of rain and maybe the temperature drops and then again with the hotness. Last thursday it was 109! And I take the subway to work yay! it’l like 120 down there hahahaha.
Last July it snowed here in Buenos Aires for the first time after 90 years. People were out in the streets playing with snow (we only get snow in the south part of the country) all happy and amazed, I was more worried than anything else. We have a glaciar in the south (perito moreno), people come from all over the world to watch it crack it’s an amazing thing but it usually does it every 4 years, this time it only took it two to start breaking and falling.
Though it worries me I agree that the weather has always been changing throught the history of our planet, but I’m not sure if it was this fast.
December 18th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
Oh the irony…I’m in Charleston, SC and we hit 78 degrees the past two days and are supposed to get to at least 80 tomorrow.
Granted Sunday it’s supposed to be 45ish which is more typical for this time of year…
December 18th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
Kind of makes me happy since the last 5 days were like 20 below zero here in good old Montana. It’s finally above zero but not above freezing…
December 18th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Atlanta, a week ago, felt like 35 degrees outside.
Today it’s about 70. I wore a short-sleeved shirt- very odd.
December 18th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
It was the weirdest thing to see snow here in Vegas yesterday. I’m originally from the Midwest (Go Wisco!), and it was funny to see everyone freaking out. Especially those who have never seen snow. All the kiddies were playing it.
Although, I did not enjoy the drivers. It seems not many people out here know how to drive in it.
And get this, schools were cancelled today! It was really insane. I think they thought it was going to freeze because the roads were just fine when I went into work.
December 18th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
well northern ireland is oddly a lot colder than what it normally is at this time of year…but damp and wet nothing new there! i wouldnt mind some of your snow though, few extra days off work would go down a treat! take care everyone :)
December 18th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
I am in NYC and it’s 38 degrees for me right now. It’s gonna snow tomorrow idk exactly how much we are getting, but i am guessing anywhere from 2-5 inches.
December 19th, 2008 at 12:24 am
I;m here in Allentown, PA where we are awaiting the same storm that dropped snow on CA and Vegas. I couldn’t believe those pictures! Here a couple inches of snow just means you need to get up earlier for work but I can’t imagine what people who aren ‘t used to it must be thinking! I wish I were there it would have been like home for a little bit! lol… I hope the good people of SoCal and Vegas who woke up to snow knew how to use shovels!
December 19th, 2008 at 1:56 am
Well, here in Australia, its currently 35 degrees celcius (about 95 F).. Can’t get any better than a beach BBQ on Xmas day!
December 19th, 2008 at 2:10 am
awesome summer weather down here in Auckland, NZ! i have actually never experienced a winter Xmas before lol
