Kevin Federline Does ‘People’ Magazine
AKA 'Kevin: For The Record'

Kevin Federline, with his two young sons Sean Preston and Jayden James, is featured on the cover of this week’s issue of People magazine wherein the former dancer/rapper/husband “breaks his silence” in order to tell “his side of the story” in response to the press that ex-wife Britney Spears has been getting lately. On the one hand, I think it was very gentlemanly for K-Fed to hold off on telling “his side of the story” until Britney was ready to talk to the press about her life but on the other hand, I can’t help but feel that this People magazine coverstory is a gentle reminder that he is out there and that we should be aware of that fact. Here is this week’s cover of People magazine with K-Fed and boys and a portion from the coverstory interview:

Kevin Federline has been called many things in the nearly five years since Britney Spears walked into his life: boy toy, gold-digger, wannabe rapper, partier. These days he answers to one name: Daddy. Since splitting with Spears in 2006 – and then watching in fear as she went through her very public breakdown – the former backup dancer, 30, has channeled all of his energy into their sons Preston, 3, and Jayden, 2. Now that Spears, 27, is getting her life back on track, they’re sharing parenting duties again – and Federline is ready to tell his side of the story exclusively to PEOPLE.

Do you remember when you first met Britney?
I met her at a club in Hollywood, Joseph’s. Our eyes met and that was it. We just hit it off right away. I learned real fast how much of a whirlwind the press and everything was.

What are your happiest memories of the marriage?
Well, getting married. I never thought that I would get married but it wound up happening. That was a really, really, happy, exciting moment. I pretty much realized that I was giving my life to her, and I was doing it without question.

What went wrong?
It’s hard enough to be in a marriage, and then have a kid, then kids, it changes everything. For me, I’d become more concerned with my children. Not that I ignored Britney, but my kids are always most important … I mean, we were having complications. I didn’t give her an ultimatum, but I was trying to work stuff out with her, and she didn’t even talk to me or anything and went behind my back and filed [for divorce]. [I was] completely blindsided.

A lot of people assumed you fought for custody of the kids because of money.
My first question to [my lawyer] was, “Am I ever going to be able to see my children?” I told him that I would spend every last dime that I had to make sure that my children are okay. That’s all that mattered. I didn’t know how much power Britney had. That really scared me.

How did you react in January when Britney locked herself in the bathroom with Jayden and was later taken to the hospital on a gurney?
That whole night is a blur. You want to talk about one of my lowest points of depression, that was probably one of them. I was very, very worried for her ’cause I care about her. That’s the mother of my children. Just because I’m not in love with her doesn’t mean that I don’t love her. I’m definitely rooting for her. There’s nothing more that I want than for her to be in the best health and doing what she loves to do.

Are things getting better?
Oh, man, it’s totally turning around. It works out that [the kids] get to see her. There’s structure over there, there’s structure at my house. We’re trying to keep the same type of schedule. It doesn’t have to be completely perfect, but the foundation is there.

Again, I still contend that K-Fed really stepped up and was there for his children, Sean P and Jayden James, when they needed him most and I have no doubt that he is an amazing father to those boys. BUT, it should be noted that K-Fed has two older children with his first babymama Shar Jackson and, when talking about how devoted a father he is, we don’t usually hear about those kids. K-Fed‘s first child Kori (who is now 6) was already a toddler when Shar got pregs with their second child Kaleb (who is now 4) … which was around the time that K-Fed left them to be with Britney. It strikes me as odd that Kevin would want to be portrayed as such a doting father but chooses to exclude his other children from this touching piece. I will say this for the man, he really seems to have grown up and matured a lot. Just like Britney has made great strides in taking control of her life, so has Kevin. For me, tho, this notion of K-Fed being a savior father would ring with more validity if he included his eldest children — the ones not born of a superfamous popstar — in the tale.

Kevin didn’t step up, he had no choice. If he wanted to get any money, he was going to have to get custody of those kids. How lucky for him that Britney went crazy for a year. How can he be so loving towards Sean and Jayden, but not his other two children? What a joke. I can’t believe anyone thinks he deserves ANY credit for being a father. ITS HIS JOB, and I don’t think he has gone out of his way to do anything for them, just use them to get more money. What a joke.

  2. goodygoody says:

Perhaps he doesn’t include his other kids in the discussion because Shar is a strong parent and he hasn’t had to rescue those two from a dangerous situation. I agree, begrudgingly, that he has stepped up for Brit’s boys, and regardless of how much money is involved, and whether KFed is only in it for that, he DID step up and take those babies when they needed him.

    he gained weight

  4. Jo says:

I think the nanny deserves most credit of all. She’s the one we saw most frequently taking care of the boys during Britney’s breakdown. Kevin worked as a responsible facilitator, but I wouldn’t commend him for being a good father. But I guess given his qualities, we can commend him for all of the bad stuff he DIDN’T do? “Well, he didn’t totally abandon the boys…” “He didn’t report to the media what was privately happening with Britney…”

  5. [...] looks like a decent father holding Jayden James and Sean Preston. How soon we forget he has 2 other illegitimate children out there who are not featured on the [...]

  6. Avi says:

He needs to put a Jimmy cap on that pecker, seriously. SP looks like Kevin, JJ is more Britney.

  7. cmc says:

Um, also…Shar has custody of the two other kids. Kevin is only has primary custody of those two boys, which means he spends more time with them, of course since they actually live with him.

  8. Tracy says:

I do think it should be noted that at no point in his interview did he insult Britney or say anything bad about her. In fact he did just the opposite. Compare that to Britney talking smack about Kevin. I just think he is being the bigger person here and it is because of him that these children are happy and healthy today.

  9. Stephanie says:

I agree with you very much, he’s only talking about the famous kids and that’s shady. if you’re such a great father, be a great father to all 4 of your babies, not just the ones in the spotlight with their mama. I hope that Sean Preston and Jayden get to hang out with the other 2 kids, as if they’re the same family. Harmony is a wonderful thing for kids.

we’ll never know the real truth with what happened with brit & kevin. with that said…when brit hit the ground hard, kevin was there for those boys. both have matured as parents. you guys cant judge him with his other kids cause you dont know whats going on and like others said..shar has custody of those kids so he doesnt see them as often. i find it smart to keep them out of everything its hard to keep SP & JJ cause thats all the media wants. and it makes sense for the other 2 kids not to be in the photos cause they have nothing to do with the article. and kevin didnt seem to say anything bad & hasnt this whole time…unlike brit who talked trash as soon as she could. so kudos to kevin on beings respectful & being there for those boys.
anyways, the pic is adorable..looks like a christmas card lol. JJ smile is tooo cute and SP is starting to look like his daddy. if Brit & Kev did anything right…they made some cute babies.

@ Stephanie: I vaguely recall seeing several posts on this blog showing all 4 Federline children at the zoo together or something. But like other posters have said, I don’t think Kevin has primary custody of his older children.

  13. Kara says:

The children look really happy, not posed. They look relaxed, which is good to see.

This was a very classy Interview, I Applaud Kevin for being This nice, i was expecting something Bad, and Fishy…

Anyway my Point is, He should get a Job, Living off Brit’s Money isn’t what a good father Does, i’m Glad he takes care of Preston and JJ, BUT he should get a job, he’s got 2 other kids, and shouldn’t be feeding them off Brit’s Money, if i was Brit i would make him sign a deal stating that the money is 100% for Preston & JJ not for him, or his other kids…

  15. zahra says:

i agree with trent with respect to the not including the famous kids in his “heartfelt story”, however i still think the man is complete and utter golddigging douchebag!

  16. rhonda says:

I completely agree with KLC. Kevin was the one there for the boys when all Brit wanted to do was party and do drugs. They both haven’t always been the best of parents, but lets face the facts, alot of men don’t step up to the plate when the mother steps down. And if all they wanted was money, they would leave the kids with the “nanny” and party all day and all night. But Kfed didn’t do that, he stayed out of the spot light, in fact not even x17 could run bad stories on him because he was no where to be found. With respect to the other two kids, I agree with the posters who stated that the mags doesn’t care about the other two kids. Kfed could had spoken about them (and he might not have) and they could had left that part of the story out. It happens mainly because the story is about Brit and Kevin and the boys not Kevin being the father of the year. Its about his side of the Brit fiasco. I am neither a brit or kfed fan–never was and never will be. They both have done shady stuff that wasn’t in the best interest of their kids. But I won’t minimize Kfeds work with the boys just because Britney wants people to feel sorry for her now–especially with her sly remarks about Kevin and her kids needing a “father figure” in their lives–that there shows how ungrateful she is. Yes ungrateful because most men/women in Kfed shoes would had made sure she never regained custody (and that wouldn’t had been too hard), demanded more child support (he never demanded more), and wouldn’t cared less if Brits parents ever seen the kids again or not (but he was the one that kept those ties opened when Brit closed them). Be thankful to God that you are able to get that second chance to be in your kids lives and don’t down the one who put you and your kids first. He may not be a saint, but he did a heck of a lot better than most men would had done. I pray that she continues on the good path she is on and pray that Kevin does as well because regardless of the facts, kids need both parents in their lives.

  17. Screw Britney says:

So what he’s a gold digger. Britney blows money like she likes to show her twat. I know it makes alot of people upset to see a man doing what women have been doing for centuries. I say take her for everything she has. She doesnt deserve any credit for for turning her life around, because if it wasnt for her daddy,( who lets be honest, only stepped in because the gravy train was starting to derail) she would still be a shitney mess. And if you people paid any attention to her MTV interview, it’s only a matter of time before she derails again.

Remember she said her new life was to controlled, micro managed and boring. That does not sound like a person who is grateful that her life is back on track, it sounds like a person who misses partying all night with Paris, shaving her head for attention, and showing her dirty twat.

She isnt even taking reponsibility for her actions, just playing the blame everyone but lil ole me game. She makes me sick. If you dont take personal resposibility for you’re actions, you are bound to repeat the same mistakes over and over again.

And at least he’s being civil towards her, I mean she hasnt been as generous towards him. I mean i watched somewthing last night were she basically said he wasnt a man, or a good father. Yet she’s tyhe one that lost custody. What a joke.

  18. ab says:

I agree with rhona, jeni, KLC, and the others. kevin has proven himself a worthy parent. he’s not perfect, but he’s obviously grown and stepped up to the plate in a way that britney hasn’t yet. I mean, it takes a hell of a lot for a family court judge to take small children away from their mother.

  19. [...] looks like a decent father holding Jayden James and Sean Preston. How soon we forget he has 2 other illegitimate children out there who are not featured on the [...]

  20. Joanne says:

The interview made him sound half decent – I would imagine he is realising what ‘might have been’ for him, if he and Brit had stayed together. I still think his own craving to be a famous person was behind all of this (and Shar seemed far too accepting of the situation … hmmm?). Why do this interview right when Brit is promoting her new album? Why even make the suggestion that he and Brit might get back together? It seemed a bit sabotaging and Britney does not need to be hearing that right now …
